We would have been a NCAA bound if the tournament was 64 teams

Wins out of confrence versus top 10 UCLA, St. John's (mullin's frosh year), west va when they were number 6, couple of other good wins

We were 5-1 coming into
This game ...and we just had a 10
Minutes stretch where we could not buy a basket (kinda like the Rutgers Michigan final four game in 76) that made this a lot worse than it should have been

Great UNC team

Rutgers playing a big-time opponent in Madison Square Garden. And you people think we needed the Big Ten to be a presence in New York.

Nope. Just have to be good. We used to play in NYC a fair number of times. Hell, we played there in football back in the WWI days. They had trains then, too.

And much like football would have been to bowls earlier had there been this many bowls 40 years ago, we would have been to at least two more NCAAs if there were 64-team fields back then, too.

If memory serves me correctly:

we had a much better game against North Carolina in feb, 1980 where I believe we lost in overtime, by three, 73-70.. North carolina ranked 11th at the time...... I think the season history has this game listed wrong, being played at MSG, not on our home court.....details a bit sketchy, but what I do remember is Darryl Strickland, a transfer in who played two years for us, hit a contested outside jumper pretty much at the buzzer for us to send it into overtime.... at the time I thought he also was fouled on that shot, which if called would have given us the chance to win in regulation....

would love to see parts of this game on tape, but a quick search shows only that 81 game

I was at this game, as well as the 1981 game..

Wheezeer

Correct. Strickland hit that shot at the buzzer...and might have got hit on the arm

The next season ....right after Clarence Tillman became eligible ....we played UNC (when they were NCAA runner up) in dec 1980 down there and lost a close game by 7 points

Which became further close game agony the next week when we played eventual national champs Indiana (with isiah Thomas) and lost by 5

That was the year we went 16-14 and we lost a zillion close games to good teams .....including one to Duke at the RAC where we missed multiple shots in the lane in the last couple of seconds that would win it by one

thanks for the confirmation.... I don't remember much else, except on the way out of MSG I stopped in a mens room and a UNC fan, with his southern drawl, said "you'll never gonna beat us"... even though we scared the hell out of them that day.

Clarence Tillman, Lloyd Moore...... a couple of guys that came in, with a lot of hype, and never really realized their supposed potential....

now, Strickland, came here as a transfer....our big competition for him was St Peters, so I knew we had a great shot.... he turned out to be a bigger asset and contributor, eventually being drafted in the NBA 5th round

that Duke game you mention..... this was the first time I left my seat and started towards the exit, because it looked like it was over
.... I got to behind the basket area in the concession section, where I had an excellent view of the final frenzied sequence of failed shots.... I think it was Kelvin Troy, not sure..... I always thought he always put up layups way too hard, not a soft touch.

was at this game! Recall they went up by ten and kept it there most of the game.

Was at this game too, as well as the MSG game against Denny Crum's highly ranked Louisville team... with all of their Camden NJ talent. Forget if that was 1980 or 82 ?? No shot clock in those days and remember Denny Crum going into a stall in that game after they finally took the lead after RU had been giving them fits. Garden was rocking with RU fans in that game as well.

That game was in Hinson's senior Year in early February 1983...imagine the Mighty national champs needing to shorten the game against NCAA Bound Rutgers.

Milt Wagner and Thompson was on that team ...as well as the McCray brothers from mount Vernon
