Camp War: Total Victory on All Fronts

I referenced the PSU camp and Ash not because I need you guys to talk about PSU - let's be honest, there's plenty of that here with no encouragement - but because I'm of the opinion that the Rutgers camp last weekend was more the brainchild of Urban Meyer than Chris Ash, and more of an OSU response to UM in NJ than a Rutgers one. Don't get me wrong, you guys absolutely benefit from the exposure this whole thing has brought, but I'm thinking Meyer initiated the camp as a recruiting tool to use against UM and Harbaugh. And if that isn't the case, given that PSU will typically be more of a recruiting enemy for RU than UM, you'd think Ash and Rutgers, if the intention is to "counter" these things, would have something this weekend too.

In general, is the Rutgers staff planning to attend other camps throughout the country? I haven't seen a complete list anywhere.

This is all about marketing. Michigan is making national headlines with their camp everywhere and SEC complaining.

Ash was able to get in on a news cycle that was running and get some positive coverage and local attention.

The state camp does not make the headlines, so countering it would be giving Penn State publicity and a story.

Regardless of whether we won the camp war or not, CA's response is 100% better than anything Flood would have done.

Flood would have offered to lend a hand without actually involving Rutgers. He would have been happy to build a friendly relationship with the coach that was going to sh#t all over him in a few months.

Yep. JH would have put him in charge of the hydration station.

Isn't three years the life expectancy of a Rutgers football coach?

Since 1960, Rutgers has had 7 coaches and Michigan has had 7 coaches.

Since 2000, Rutgers has had 3 coaches and Michigan has had 4 coaches.

Harbaugh has never been a head coach anywhere for longer than 4 seasons, which means it'll be his longest career stint if he's still with the Wolverines in 2019.

I like that Ash is taking a stand and making him work but all this is doing is pissing Harbaugh off. He will be even more aggressive and creative on and off the field.QUOTE] As if he wasn't going to be anyway.Gotta know who you are dealing with here.J.H. tries to do what he wants to do.Coach Ash will do what he does.

Personally , I think it's great that we had such enthusiasm over these satellite camps. It makes me feel like we've finally arrived as part of the Big Ten family and our building our brand and presence . Granted --it's just a satellite camp duel but you need to start somewhere in building these rivalries. Coach Ash will develop into one of the great young coaches in the game . Mark my words.

Congrats on your little victory. You think you accomplished much? Like Harbaugh isn't going to continue to take whatever elite talent out of NJ that he wants?
All you probably really accomplished was to piss off Harbaugh. Some words of advice- Don't do that. He will wipe his ass with you, just like he did on the football field last year :joy:

In reality, Harbaugh probably helped us out a lot. He picked a school in Paramus Catholic that is not well liked among other elite high schools in NJ - which allowed other rival high schools to come together in opposition in support of the Rutgers camp. I don't think we've ever seen that level of unified support from the other elite high schools in the state, and hopefully it allowed Ash to make faster inroads with those programs than he would have otherwise, being from out of state.

The fact that the Rutgers camp turned out better than the Michigan camp is just gravy - the bigger movement was the relationship building with the other big programs for a new coach without natural ties to the area.

So, thanks Harbaugh - being a douche helped us out.

...it'll be interesting to see what happens if/when Harbaugh likes a player from a North Jersey parochial school not named 'Paramus Catholic'...

The problem is Harbaugh doesnt rely on NJ players to win but Rutgers relies on them. Haurbaugh is all around the whole country with his brand and he is going to get kids he wants. It was just a pit stop for him. Getting a few less kids from NJ doesn't bother him lol. I am proud of rutgers for taking a stand instead of bending over like flood did. Only problem is Ohio will now get the top NJ kids, Mich will get a couple along with Penn st. Rutgers have to win consistently to slow this down or these recruiting battles mean nothing.

WTF you think because OSU stepped in here that all of a sudden NJ kids will just start flocking there? You don't seem to get the dynamics of this specific situation whatsoever and seem to be playing contrarian just to do it.

...but hey, at least that little window back to NJ that opened a bit for cuse seems to be in the process of being slammed shut again.

No need to be emotional. I admire your passion as a fan. OSU is the first option for kids in most states. lol Just relax, Ash will have the team playing hard until he can establish himself and get the kids in he needs to win consistently but this is just facts, you have to win games. You have to show evidence that your scheme and mission works. Im not saying anything that no one else knows on this board.

That is true. What I meant by these specific dynamics was the PC/Michigan situation. Michigan was making this big grand production with 'targeting NJ' and used their resources/targeted PC as their 'home base' here, giving the impression they were 'taking over'. Rutgers has been fighting to gain traction for years and we're getting over a rough last season on and off the field. IMO if we didn't respond the way we did, it would have been a HUGE hit to our already-beleaguered perception and really put us behind in 8-ball perception-wise. Instead, we circled the wagons, tapped our resources and responded strongly, which sent a strong message to our recruiting home base that we're not here to be anyone's doormat, and they've taken notice in a very positive way.

...sorry if it came across too aggressive; didn't meant to come across that way.

Facts? Facts on the ground are that RU is cleaning up in NJ with top tier kids this year. Shouldn't OSU, PSU, or Mich get at least one top kid out of NJ this year before making comments like that?

stop being so sensive man. these are 18 years olds. They dont pay your bills. I agree with you. I never said rutgers weren't doing well and getting in state commits.

I agree with everything you said. They had to do that. I want Rutgers to do well. Ive always stated on here that North East football and its perception is important to me. Some people automatically assume Im just trying to be negative but I get it, no one wants to here that "we still have to win thing". I know how that feels

...with a new staff there's usually a bit of a grace period but yes, eventually you need to show progress/ wins on the field. It's not that I didn't want to hear that; I originally misinterpreted your point and thought you were saying we didn't need to make such a big response to what Michigan/PC were doing. Due to the nature of how they were going about everything, IMO Rutgers had to make a very visible response that would resonate strongly and in a positive way with our recruiting base. I definitely understand OSU and Michigan recruit nationally and will still look towards NJ and land recruits from here, but Harbaugh IMO was clearly and overtly trying to plant their flag here using PC as their proxy...thing is, he didn't quite understand the North Jersey parochial dynamics and that the other parochials in the area don't respect the way PC has conducted themselves over the last 4-5 or so seasons.

I'm not sure I would say cleaning up with Top Tier NJ kids. I see 5 NJ kids I would call top tier. 1 is a Rutgers commit and 4 are uncommitted.
Top rated are uncomitted
Singleton from PC has Mich. OSU and Rutgers offers.
Fred Hansard from Hun has Mich. OSU and Rutgers offers
Markquese Bell from Bridgeton Has Mich and Rutgers offers.
Harrison Hand Cherry Hill West OSU and Rutgers offers.

Rutgers has so far gotten a commit from 1 4star NJ player, Micah Clark. Solid get ranked 199 and Bo Melton not nationally ranked again solid player. Both had Mich offers. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe both had strong Rutgers ties.
The balance of Rutgers NJ commits kids are 2 and 3 stars.
We agree OSU,PSU and Mich should get at least 1 before making a comment like that but I would also say Maybe we should see where The top 4 commit prior to saying Rutgers is cleaning up.
Having said all that I also think Ash did a great job with the camp and getting the Rutgers name out there. He got untold amounts of media coverage butting heads with Harbaugh. Also got a ton of kids seen by tons of college coaches. A win by any standard. I wish Rutgers luck all but 1 night a year.

How can anyone NOT think this is not a big deal? Rutgers is usually, at best, an afterthought by many of the state's residents. We all see a lot more out of state gear on people than RU's.
If this school can ever get the people behind them like the Michigans of the football landscape, things will definitely turn out better on the field.
When they literally set up camp on your turf, it shows that they 1) want your best players and 2)don't have much fear of the home school getting in their way.
This time, it looks like they came up a bit short. Kudos to Ash and his staff.

It time to make certain visitors disappear NJ style.[winking] Just as fan from here don't know the everything that's going on with Michigan recruiting, neither do you about Rutgers. To say Rutgers is only recruiting 2 or 3 stars is a cheap shot and expected from Michigan fans. There is a reason why UM is the most disliked school in the B1G. You can have the Paramus Catholic kids, but knowing other NJ recruits Michigan is not as high on their list as Rutgers. The camp last Wednesday was telling even if you don't admit it. Michigan did exactly what State Penn did 2 years ago... came in did well with top recruits, then they were never heard from again in NJ the follow recruiting cycles. How long will Partridge remain as a coach once the PC connection dries up?[roll] Btw, it's Paramus Catholic because there is a school across town called Paramus High School. Too many Michigan fans continue to make this mistake... got it Michigan State.[laughing]

Bo Melton has Mich and OSU offers and is considered a 4 star top 5 in NJ by everyone but the Rivals National guus because he didn't camp for them.

So that's 2 of the top 5. And we are probably the front runners for 2 of the remaining 3. OSU, Mich, PSU have none. That's as close to cleaning up as you can get this early in the process.

If Rutgers lands 2 more of the top 5 in NJ I will agree. If not well? All I was saying is it may be a bit early.

All we can do is talk about where we are right now. Kicking ass in the first half isn't winning the game. Buts it's still kicking ass in the first half and I'll take it.

Not suggesting I know Rutgers recruiting. Nor did I say Rutgers is only recruiting 2 or 3 stars. I really don't care about the NJ HS or their coaches battles with each other.
My comment was in response to the statement Rutgers is cleaning up with the top NJ recruits. I only pointed out 1 4* and the rest 3 stars comitted. Then pointed out the 4 NJ kids in the Rivals top 250 still uncommitted had offers from Mich and OSU among many others. Whether they end up at Mich or OSU or Bama or another school other than Rutgers makes the cleaning up comment irrelevant.
If they should land a couple of the 4 left. I agree with the cleaned up this year.
How long will Partridge last? He did pretty well as a High School coach, did pretty well as a recruiting coordinator and earned a shot as an assistant coach under a pretty good DC in Brown. If he sucks as a LB coach he's gone. If he is solid he stays.
If Mich never gets another recruit out of NJ I'm not sure it will impact where their classes end up.
If the bulk of top recruits in NJ go to schools other than Rutgers that is a big issue for Rutgers. Currently it appears Rutgers is improving recruiting regionally but if they are to be competitive in the B1G Ash will need to have more success nationally. I have no question that is in his plan.

Thanks for the thoughtful posts. I disagree that we need to recruit nationally. Michigan has a Rivals top 20 split between 2 BCS schools. NJ has a top 35 with only RU. Add in neighboring NYC and CT with no local schools, it's a recruiting base only a few SEC schools can match. If we take care of business at home we only need to augment a little with out of area recruiting. Not saying that's an easy task, but it's doable in a way that Northwestern or Minnesota for example could never match if we get it going.

I have no idea who "won" the "camp war," nor do I care. All I know is (a) it's wildly entertaining how much so many of you seem to care about a single satellite camp, and (b) these next 80+ days need to pass quickly so we can discuss things that matter.
Among the things I do know is you don't have an avatar. Among the things I don't know is which college you went to. Please take a moment to remedy these issues.
