Expectations on RU Athletics apparael deal - Nike and UA

UCLA has a decent name but has nowhere near the name OSU, Michigan or USC and their deal was crazy. It looks like Under Armour pushed the market up. Also, the standard deal is about 15 years. I may be overreaching here but 15 years @ 10 Mil a year is probably not an unreasonable guess for us.

That sounds pretty high to me considering that very few schools are currently getting $10 million per year. ND is at $9 million. It would be great but am not expecting it. What does RU currently receive, anyone know?

I'm hoping that we seriously look at UA for the next deal. Seems like they're willing to shell out $$$. Only question is would they do that for RU considering conference & proximity to Maryland.

I think Rutgers gets, a few uniforms, a bag of chips and a cookie from Nike. Seriously, we get almost no cash -- almost all is in kind. We may even have to pay for the cookies under current arrangement.

It was posted here a couple of weeks ago that our Nike deal - inked when we were in the lowly AAC - pays about a measly $350K a year (plus the bag of chips).

I haven't seen anything from the CLC for a few years, but our sales must be going through the roof compared to ten, even, seven years ago. People wearing Rutgers gear (not to mention Rutgers magnets on cars) are everywhere now.

I think 5-8M (cash and apparel) and probably towards the lower end. The market is overheated because of UA/Adidas but I think it's hard to predict just how heated it is for us so I give a fairly wide range.

Market matters and stature matters and competition among suitors matters but how all those variable comes into play into how high a number we get is a little hard to pinpoint IMO. Louisville recently got a deal worth about 7-8M, the Cal deal was also in that vicinity and Cincy got one that was worth about 4.9M so that's why I bookend it around that range but tend to think it'll be towards the lower end.

These deals all seem crazy to me but I'm sure the UCLA deal will get passed by someone too probably sooner rather than later.

$4-6M I'm thinking like 5 should be the number.

I read that one of the factors UA took into account was the LA market. I'm not going to guess numbers, but if market size is a factor.......

The difference is if UA lost the deal they would been shut out of California and the west coast, not just LA. UA has more of a presence in the north east with Northwestern and Maryland in the B1G and BC in the ACC, Cincy, Temple, Maryland and Navy in the AAC along with ND who is huge in the north east.

Arizona – Nike
Arizona State – Adidas
California – Nike
Colorado – Nike
Oregon – Nike
Oregon State – Nike
Stanford – Nike
UCLA – Adidas
USC – Nike
Utah – Under Armour
Washington – Nike
Washington State – Nike

Other:
Fresno State – Nike
San Diego State – Nike
San Jose State – Nike

UA signed Cal a month earlier so they wouldn't have been shut out of California. They wanted the LA market & USC is Nike.

I thought we got $130K/year in cash from Nike in the current deal. We're going to see an immediate big step up, and that should sharply reduce the subsidy chatter from the Sludger.

You will know when big money is involved. It will be signaled by NJ politicians saying they need to be involved. They will need to name a financial consultant to okay the deal. it will be a highly paid no-show job manned by a friend or relative. And if Rutgers resists, you will see the Star Ledger launch some investigative journalists to "uncover" some wrongdoings by everyone involved.

UA in general is much bigger on the east coast. Kids here seem fully into NIke. USC being a Nike school only enforces it. And their shoes are horrible. They need better designers.
