Today was one of those conference shitkickings that were pretty commonplace for Rutgers in its first few Big 10 seasons. The difference was Rutgers was on the giving and not receiving ends today, Today's 28 point win comes in behind last's years 30 point victory over Michigan State as Rutgers largest margin of victory in league play. 4 straight win, 2 straight league win, 3-1 Big 10 start all good things but looking deeper to me there is a lot of significance to this win albeit against a hapless Nebby. It points to meeting a bunch of challenges

Honestly, Nebraska is terrible. There is a reason they are 6-10 and have one road win in 28 league games. I do not think Hoiberg does a particularly good job at coaching his team and they may rival Eddie Jordan's teams as the worst defensive team in Big 10 history. While they are awful, that does not mean RU could not lose to them. We saw that last season. RU playing to shore up their NCAA resume laid a stinking turd and were thoroughly humiliated by Nebraska. Goes to show you that you must come to play every night. In approaching a team like Nebraska, who has talent, can score in bunches but is truly emotionally fragile and lacking confidence, Rutgers bringing it and playing their game was going to decide everything. That in itself was meeting a challenge. Without question this particular group the past couple seasons most notably early on this season, does not seem to ever get up for the less schools on the schedule. It nearly burned them vs Lehigh and its still smarting their ass from the stunning loss to Lafayette. While out of the gate perhaps a bit wobbly, RU asserted themselves by midway through the first half and away they went. Not only did RU do what they had to do to open a double digit halftime lead over bottom feeding conference foe but they also met the challenges of overcoming an off night by Geo and the usual 2nd half letdown of being up big and losing intensity. You do not beat Nebraska by being passive and running clock. You beat them by being aggressive, drawing fouls, making them look silly trying to defend. RU succeeded on all 3 counts and never let up.But big picture its overcoming the despair and disappointment of its poor out of conference vs the dregs on its schedule and hideous loss to Lehigh and now putting together 6 wins in the last 7 games. The season was truly on the verge of going down the tubes after the Illinois loss with Purdue coming into the RAC. This team has completely turned its season upside down and finding itself in ways that even the most optimistic fan could not have imagined. Step by step you see the confidence burgeoning from the starting core and the ugly duckling label that described the bench has incremently grown game by game where we know are getting hints of a complete team.

Bad team lose and find ways to lose. Good teams find ways to win and Rutgers is finding different ways to win. The thread the needle win RU got vs Purdue with Ron carrying the team isn't sustainable for stretches of games. Likewise relying on Geo to go off for a career night like vs Michigan is tough to replicate in this league. Today Geo was never on with his shot and Ron who finished with a superlative game had a rough start. Enter Andre Hyatt. Hyatt has been somewhat frustrating this year. I think fans put too high of expecations on him. He had some good games early but then a string of bad ones that got his minutes cut. Little by little the last few games Hyatt is showing us the X factor off the bench he can become. His sweet stroke to give the offense a lift at the right moment. After a Harper airball 3 and Nebby up 11-6, Hyatt changed the course of the game hitting his first shot, grabbing a rebound, knocking down 2 foul shots, grabbing a rebound off a Nebby miss and draining a 3 on the ensuing play that put RU up 17-16 and RU would never trail from there. That flurrry of place seem to reignite guys like Paul Mulcahy and Ron Harper and it seemed to put everyone the same page and it snowballed from there. Hyatt finished with 13 points on 4-6 shooting with 6 boards and 2 assists in just 20 minutes. Playing his role off the bench to perfection today. Much more satisfy that RU was jumped started today not because they rode Ron and Geo but because it was Aundre and then a guy named Threeiber

Not sure who coined the name, its in the game thread and they get the rights but Reiber had an unlikley breakout game. Forced into early action because of 2 quick fouls on Cliff, Reiber made the best of his minutes and earned a ton more today. Reiber made his presence known in tandem with Hyatt as he hit on a layup assited by Mulcahy. Dean grabbed a couple of rebounds but absolutely no one was ready for his draining that 3 wide open 3 that put RU up 20-16. Dean would play pretty solid defensively the rest of the way and Pike inserted him back in the game for the closing possesion which wound up with a Ron to Dean pass for an emphatic dunk that ended up the half and put RU up 44-31. Cliff took over in the 2nd but Dean would thrill everyone once again with yet another 3 from the corner that put RU up 75-54 and I think this was one unofficially over after that. Reiber had some night. 10 points on 4-6 shooting, 2-2 from 3 and 4 boards in 17 minutes. For a guy that had even struggled to look like he could play against the likes of Lehigh and Lafayette, this type of perfornance where not only did he see significant minutes but was a major part of why Rutgers will only strength Reiber's courage and aplomb....and Pike's too. Reality is RU is weak at the 5 spot. Any foul trouble with Cliff really knocks out what we are trying to do. Agee just doesnt seem to have the size or presence to be an adequate replacement. Reiber took leaps in his development today. Obviously we will not see him hoisting 3s against the stalwarts of the Big 10 but we will see making important contributions going forward as the backup to Cliff.

Now to touch on the starters. I mean Ron Harper Jr.....geez is he coming on or what. 29 points on 8-13, 3-6 from 3 and absolute monster at the line going 10-10, 7 of those in the first half. You could see his confidence with the 3 and you could see he realize that Nebraska could not defend him. Ron just kept going to the basket for a stretch later in the first half and was tallying points in bunches. Ron had a better game then he did vs Michigan overall and just might earn Big 10 player of the week honors. No surprise that in RU's biggest 4 wins this year, he has 29, 20, 30, and 23. His back to back 3s early in the 2nd that put RU up basically indictated to Rutgers fans, relax, we are going to win this one. He really is blossoming his senior year into that consistent night in and night out player that RU fans are used to seeing at the elite schools.

Geo Baker had an off shooting night and kudos to him for realizing that and deferring to those that were on. Geo was just 1-5 in the first and took 2 the rest of the way but showed leadership in deciding not to force things. Geo had 6 assists including some 3 straight beauts to Ron. Had 3 steals and thought he played pretty good D tonight.

Let us talk Paul tonight. Did he actually have a dunk? Paul was aggressive today with the ball not only shooting but distributing. A whopping 8 assists, Paul was not shy shooting either take 111 shots and scoring 10 points and grabbing 7 boards. It seemed like everytime you looked up the ball was in Paul's hands. Paul made Nebraska look silly at times and dominated for stretches. Caleb had solid game contributing some nice buckets, playing his usual solid D and think had 4 assists. Think came out at one point for a wrist issue and did get into some foul trouble at times that probably preventing him from putting up a better line but man is he becoming consistent now. Cliff foul trouble derailed him but he came back in the 2nd and hit some nice shots away from the basket. Man if he can start hitting them against the tougher opponents on our slate, RU is going to be a tough out. Ended up still in double figures at 10 on 5-7 shooting in just 17 minutes. Thought his D could have been a little better early against Andre.

Not a line but a whopping 17 minutes for Jalen Miller, 4 points, 3 boards....big minutes for him getting comfortable. I liked his D and energy and playing with different combos out there. The more minutes he plays getting his sea legs under him the better it is for RU going forward. Alot of chatter about Jones not playing but the fact is he didnt need to play significant minutes today and I like Pike for recognizing that. Its not that Jaden will not be called upon but in this particular game it was first about getting up enough to secure the victory and about developing others...Hyatt, Reiber, Miller. You dont want to just throw Jones in their and mess up the good synergy that was going on. I did like Jones came in the last 4 minutes and hit for 5 points including a 3, pretty effortless shots so even in the garbage minutes those are positives. Aiden Terry had a career night, no points but 2 boards and an assist, great to see him get a few minutes and you could tell his teammates are really rooting for him.

Coach Pikiell and staff once again really doing a great job reading the pulse of this team and the in game rotations. Allowing Hyatt and Reiber more time out there especially when Nebby started making up ground right after he took those guys out. Pike knows what his bread and butter core can give him but he is also gaining more courage in allowing others to contribute. His game plan was perfect vs Nebraska. Its not a game you want to grind out. You want to exploit a bad defensive team and make them pay and in that respect Pikiell simply outclassed Hoiberg today in every which way.

At the end of the day, we must realize that every game is not going to go like today. Nebraska is a last place team. Be optimistic now going forward but do not get too caught up in how "good" we are. Rutgers still has a lot to prove and especially on the road. RU does not have a road win this season. 2 closes losses against mediocre at best competition, a blowout defeat to one of the tops in the league and a competitive yet unspectacular showing vs SHU. Be happy that Rutgers is now starting to win games in bunches. Be happy that each game RU is showing the incremental improvement that a team needs to make to put themselves in position to reach their goals. We have learned so much about Rutgers in the past 10 days and we are going to learn so much more in the next two. Two winnable games against perceived 2nd tier league schools. RU has had some wins at Penn State in the Big 10 but not the past two season and RU did beat Maryland last year on the road. As usual its best to take a game by game approach. You are never as good as your last win or never as bad as your last conference road loss. Challenges met over the past several weeks yet it never ends. A new set of unique challenges presented on the road where the team must create its own energy and must overcome adversity without the familiar confines of the RAC to fall back on.

Nicely done bac. Every B1G win is critical, so this is one we had to have. For me, the importance of this game, and all 4 games in our current winning streak, comes down to two things: confidence and contributions.

We have guys who have gained tremendous confidence over these games, and we’re getting contributions from multiple non-starters, including Hyatt, Reiber, Miller, and Mag, all of which bodes well for the challenges ahead.

Edit: one more thing — for the confidence and contributions we’re seeing now, I credit Pike. Our guys know that if they work hard in practice and earn floor time, that coach Pike will give them the green light to try and make plays. That’s why we’re seeing Cliff and Dean taking and making big outside shots in a B1G game.

I thought game was going to be much tougher for us so I was thrilled we won so easily. Great all around effort by entire team. Harp was sensational once again and terrific efforts by all especially Paul / Hyatt and Reiber.

The crowd looked good on tv

It wascrazy loud but it didn’t have to be.

I’ll say this , there isn’t a smarter basketball crowd in the conference than at The RAC

The RU crowd just gets it, understands basketball.

I don't want to simplify things, but RU has (to me) had 3 separate seasons in 14 games.

A) Season 1 where Caleb McConnell was literally anemic.....Jalen Miller's defense was bolted to the bench and we got very little from Mag, while Mulcahy played a lot of PG.....Hyatt played OK but looked out of sorts despite scoring around 8 to 9PPG

B) Baker gets hurt, Miller is forced to play and provides not good but very good on the ball defense.....Caleb starts to play better, Hyatt gets less minutes and Mag, starts to play better in losing efforts vs Illinois, UMass and Seton Hall.....Harper, Mag, Caleb with Cliff etc, spring an upset that salvaged the season over Purdue (minus Baker).

C) Baker is back and Caleb and Miller and Mag are all able to play good defense, Harper's work on the offensive end is efficient because Baker and Caleb are more on the ball, moving the ball....Mulcahy is moved back to his wing/guard position for most of his minutes....where he can curl into the lane, create passes and take shorter shots.....when he's on the wing, he can hit open 3s, vs being asked to handle the ball most of the time.....Hyatt is back in the mix and Caleb is consistently harassing people on the other end of the court BUT Mag gets injured again.

Unlike most of last season, where we kinda knew what we had from the players who departed, in this season, we are still inputting data (players without extensive experience) and finding out through trial and error, what can work and what might need more time.

The version of RU where Jalen Miller provides the same on the ball defense like Young last year and helps with the ball handling, is perfect.....The difference is, Miller isn't absorbing any shot attempts and the ball moves and finds the better shooters (Harper, Baker, Hyatt).....

The other "key" is the 5 position is now a true 5.....not just lobs for dunks or post ups, which slows the offense down....Cliff doesn't have to run to the block, to score....mid range?? Takes the shot....left open for 3, Cliff and Reiber take that shot.....Myles Johnson or Shaq Doorson, Doucoure or others, just weren't capable or willing to take those shots.

This version of basketball is no longer completely reliant on Baker and Harper to take a combined 30 shots every night.....they should get at least 20 to 25 shots combined, but Cliff, Hyatt, Caleb and Mulcahy can all get you 8 to 10 points in a game.

The key for the whole season (to me) is Jalen Miller's unselfish and aggressive defense....go take on McGowens a 5*.....go after Illinois guard and 5th year senior, Trent Frazier, when RU was getting demolished. Sure he got crushed on a pick here or there, but this team has chemistry.

I am not going to say chemistry is good after a huge win, it should be....but you get the feeling that there is a true pecking order....RHJ 1st, Baker 2nd, Cliff and Caleb 3rd and Paul being unselfish, doing Paul Mulcahy things....

There isn't a question on who should get the ball now....gone are the lame discussions of who's team is this?? It is a Pike led team, warts and all and sure there are going to be a few other ugly games along the way.........but it has his type of players, buying in and the results are showing with assists and defense on the ball way up, and more passes and looking for teammates, while turnovers are down.

A team that is connected, becomes much easier to watch develop.....looking forward to the next steps on what happens next....

I’m glad you mentioned JalenMiller’s contributions. I think it’s more than coincidental that the team energy and intensity level increased when Pike removed his redshirt and inserted him into the game. Tough , intense and high energy Defense can be contagious.

“Paul was not shy shooting either take 111 shots and scoring 10 points and grabbing 7 boards.” 111 shots? Ball hog. Lol

Great Recap Bac

As Huey Lewis sang....

All I want from tomorrow
Is to get it better than today
Step by step, one by one
Higher and higher
Step by step, rung by rung
Climbing and climbing
Nice recap, as usual. We have 3 B1G wins in a row and I'm pretty sure it was @FrankZ who coined "Threiber."

Great writeup Bac, but going to have to deduct points for short changing Aiden a rebound and citing one of Huey Lewis's much weaker tunes.

So what’s the deal with Agee? Pike realizing he doesn’t have the chops or do you think it’s taking longer than expected for him to learn/fit the system?

Nebraska has pieces, but as a team they were crap. For those who think shot blocking is overrated. Verve Jr. is incredibly fast with the ball in his hands. 55 gave us fits for like a 3 minute stretch and then...

Nebraska is terrible defensively, but we did a spectacular job offensively. I am looking forward to see if this improved offense translates on the road against a team that wants to disrupt what we try to do. a team that will Pressure on ball and be in passing lanes and exploit our weak spots on offense.

When looking at high school film for Jalen Miller, one thing that stood out that I think I mentioned on this board was his finishing ability. Tonight we caught a glimpse of that, with a lefty layup in transition that showed good touch to put it high on the backboard to prevent the defender from blocking it and a very impressive one through traffic, again showing good touch and sense of angles. As the rest of his game progresses, it will be interesting to see if he can turn this into an elite trait of his.

He played a couple minutes. I just don’t think he has the juice for this league. If he was in a P4 school he would be dominating. Big10 is just too much for him tbh
Disagree. He made some really nice plays in the short time he was in there. On one, he stole a ball in the paint, gave a quick outlet to Geo ( I think) for a break and he dumped it off to Miller (I think) for a layup. He also played good defense on Walker. I was impressed with his game today as he seemed ready, focused, and energetic. I think he'll continue to get better. Overall, I think Reiber and Agee will be fine as backups to Cliff.

Walker had been like the most efficient player in the conference and they made no effort to feed him touches early on.

The freshman McGowens will be really good . Incredibly smooth and almost glided towards the rim. As others have said, Nebraska has several decent players but their defense was awful. No wonder every team is shooting the lights out on them.

The freshman McGowens is a 5 * and projected late 1st round pick in NBA Draft

Miller also had some nifty behind-the-back passes that showed great court awareness. You can see his confidence building with each game.

Miller is a future captain per Pike and I can definitely see those characteristics with him. It’s shame he didn’t play in the wtf losses we had because I think he would have/ could have been the difference.

Great post. Millers D and pressure changed the game yesterday. Took our lacking energy to a new level.

He does so many little things to disrupt the other team (and help our key guys)

I love this kid.

Disagree.

Agee should be the 3rd option behind Reiber

We are a hot mess defensively when Agee is in.

He has a long way to go to provide positive backup minutes.

I would give 90% of them to Reiber who has areas to develop, but gets better each game and isnt constantly lost...

(sorry so harsh/direct)

While Nebraska’s D was clearly lacking, they did do a decent job early on in pressuring the ball, especially when Geo was running the point.

I would give our offensive ball movement just a little more credit for making Nebraska’s D look even worse than it was.

Also gotta hand it to the coaches for game-planning, with Mulcahy often backing down his much smaller defender. Once he got deep into the paint, Paul was in position to work his magic, to either dish or score.

I actually agree with your first sentence. Reiber has earned PT ahead of Agee at this point. My post was in reaction to the disparagement of Agee saying he doesn't belong in the B10 (which you also seem to believe). As I said, I was encouraged by Agee yesterday as he certainly was not a "hot mess". I have faith that Pike knows what he's doing with player recruitment and development. I'll bet that you change your tune about Agee over the next few games (if he gets PT, lol).

Agee and Reiber are face up big men....I would hesitate to even call Agee a big, he is a undersized PF, who faces the basket.....the staff asked players to do things they were not good at doing....

A) we tried Mulcahy as the primary starter of the offense at PG....it is not his ideal role, against other guards who want to pressure on defense.

B) We tried feeding an offensive player in Agee, into the low post, when his San Jose State game tape, showed him at the elbow or foul-line facing the basket and driving off the dribble. Agee is not a leaper, who can outjump his opponents inside.....why plug him inside, where he doesn't have the legs to jump over people or the arm-length or shoulders to crash into people and score?????

Aundre Hyatt is better at all of those things (post up offensive game, maneuver inside the FT line....).....that subtle change increases the offensive success.

C) Same with Reiber.....his HS tape was more mobility and fluid offensive game, facing up.....he can score in the post. But he needs more of a variety of post-up moves and to develop stronger hands and pump-fakes to draw contact and get to the FT line....but he has a decent release and touch, which you either have or you have to develop. I would let him take 2 to 3 3 pointers a game, for his 10 to 15 or so minutes......he is also able to pass the ball like Myles could from the top of the key or FT line

D) Cliff is also more fluid, facing the basket, he can jump hook and is wildly athletic and quick to dunk, before a normal big can react....he has a lot to learn on defensive positioning and understanding what post ups an opponent wants to go to....(Myles was better at understanding what an opponent wanted to do against him on offense, but sometimes wasn't able to avoid fouling)......Cliff is also smart about "letting people score" instead of challenging every shot.

This is where fans lose sight of "Dickinson or Walker from Nebraska was able to score on Cliff".....Well, "duh", this isn't 1 on 1 in the park, where there's no refs and no FTs.....Cliff understanding more he is needed on the floor and fouling or surrendering a few baskets is OK......he will offset it and get his offense on the other end.

I am not going to say that the departing players were not good players, that would be false.....what I am saying is it takes a level of sacrifice to dig in on defense like Caleb, and not feel important, only if you get 10 or more shots (insert whomever departing guard you want to here).

It is also OK to want to score and also defend, but an extra shot desire or that thirst to score, resulted in "putting my head down, going to the basket and seeing if I can score".

We are seeing less and less of those types of possessions, where last year, you could count on at least 10 to 12 possessions a game, where guards would just "take off with the ball".

Sometimes that works and looks good or spectacular and others, it would lead to a turnover or forced up shot and opponents getting baskets on the other end.

Reducing the empty possessions is helping this roster right now and don't mistake talent departing as "not as good of a team"......

Agee got yanked after several plays on the defensive end where he just couldn’t defend the pick and roll.

Hope you're right. I'm actually a very patient person and look for little things that can be developed. I was on the Eugene train very early. I've continued to back Reiber (and several others).

Since Pike got here, there are two guys that I am struggling to see where the development comes from. One was souf The other is Agee.

I would love to be wrong and if I am I will be the first person to eat crow. And it won't be some b******* explanation where I try to suggest that I was actually right when I was wrong. I will full-out say I was wrong. And I would love to do it.

I looked at the scoreboard when we had 25 points and realized that at that point the starters had 10 and the bench had 15 (mostly Hyatt with 8 and Reiber with 5). In the 2nd half when we were at 57 points the bench was at 17 and starters at 42. It seems that after the slow start, Pike went to the bench and their performance woke up the starting 5 who took over and built up the big lead.
I think the key to Reiber being successful is the matchup. He has trouble competing against the real big physical centers. The 7 footer from Purdue practically backed him into section 118 at one point which is why Pike bought Luke Nathan in to that game in the 1st half. Yesterday Reiber did not have the size disadvantage and was able to play his game.

We can agree to disagree. I want to see hopefully much more of what you’re seeing through the rest of the season. Than I’ll come back to you and say you’re right

Bac is 1 more Huey Lewis post/song/reference from being on my ignore list. I can handle the COVID/political disagreements, but this is where the line must be drawn.
Not a big Huey Lewis fan but didn’t he have an album called Sports back in the day? Gotta say I saw Huey once I believe at the State Theatre many years ago and it was a good, fun enjoyable show. I think Huey is a big SF fan.
