Hobbs’ Response After Multiple Sellouts, Decrease Capacity

Link?

If people are willing to pony up for the premium costs RU wants they will make major dollars with less seats.

IF I lose my seats because people want to pay much more than I can pay....it will be disappointing but I cannot blame them.

The primary mandate of any RAC upgrade program is to maximize revenue.

I agree it sucks that we might actually have fewer seats than we have now. Doesn’t seem like progress from the fan perspective.
Having 7700 seats at a school the size of RU and playing in the most successful conference in the country is an embarrassment. If the AD is hell bent on premium seating the answer is easy - build new.

What a ridiculous plan! Rutgers BB finally creating enough excitement to boost ticket sales and he’s going to squeeze loyal fans by taking or moving their seats, unless they pay much more than now.
A plan that results in the worst of both worlds. Lower capacity and lackluster premium spaces. Rutgers decision making at its finest. Just build new.

Stop being dense

The guy has to increase revenues

Deal with it or donate a sh1t-ton of money

Happy Thanksgiving!

Building a modern cookie cutter arena vs maintaining a competitive advantage of an extremely loud and unique arena. I’d argue who really had the ridiculous take.

Nobody's building a new arena
You don't tear down one of the best home court advantages in college basketball
CIS, AFH, Pauly, etc don't get knocked down for cookie cutters
They get remodeled every so often and updated to make $

Correct. Hobbs said Basically the same capacity or slightly reduced.

But thinking logically, for every “luxury seat” created likely replaces a current seat.

Each 16 seat luxury box replaces a certain number of regular existing seats in order to keep the same capacity.

We need premium seating, we need to add revenue. The RAC is built in a very unique way and it's likely difficult and costly to blow out any side of it. I think they might be over thinking it. Just add some club seating options, bathrooms and keep the place a snake pit.

Don’t have time to listen right now.
Where would these luxury boxes be located?
When I think club seating, to me it means you’re removing yourself from the crowd and atmosphere.
I have friends who are in the club at SHI and still retained their seats on the other side of the stadium at the 50 yard line.
When we’re competitive and the atmosphere at the game is good, they always choose to be amongst the crowd.

Same folks who are going to shell out a two hundred million for the RAC upgrades. Might as well drop 500 million on a new venue.

A larger arena would open up more avenues for revenue. Could add premium amenities and more seats. Host concerts and shows.
It could also potentially destroy the best home court advantage in the country

Hate to say it but it seems anything we build new in this area just sucks. The one exception, may be Citi Field. I just can't see us building new and able to keep the same home field which is also part mystic as it is the noise- which is intense.

There is a real need to increase revenue, sucks it may cost seats to current holders but there doesnt seem a way around it. And then dress up concession and bathrooms.

I know it’s sacrilege but I do think our home court advantage is somewhat overrated (personally think all of them are).

Yes it’s great - when the team is playing great.
When the team isn’t playing good - it’s not.

We lost 4 home games to end last season when the team was fighting for a tourney berth.

Doesn’t matter how great the home court advantage is - if the players aren’t making shots then it doesn’t really matter.

While I do not think we have the money to build a new arena, if we did. Why would it have to be cookie cutter and lose our home court advantage?
For the same reason you can’t replace Fenway Park, it wouldn’t matter how much you spent or tried.
The Trapezoid is our Fenway, and any non bias basketball aficionado who takes a game in there agrees.

The problem is the state is putting up more money than anyone else. Do you think they would foot the entire bill? Besides, with all the complaining on this board, it's clear we lack enough support to raise the money to build things the right way. $30 for parking is enough to cause a riot on this board. 🤣

Add bathrooms, raise prices 30% across the board. RU gets the revenue bump, fans keep their seats, and the RAC doesn’t get too comfortable

Two big reasons. One is that the dimensions of the RAC that make it great - namely the very steep angle of the seating placing fans right on top of the game - is no longer ok. Not sure if it’s technically not up the code, or no longer acceptable practice, but everyone agrees it’s off the table.

Second, to cover the cost, a new arena would have to cater to more than basketball. So the dimensions would be designed for concerts and ice, skating shows, etc.

The RAC is maximized as an old time basketball snake pit.

Are you telling me that an architect with a several hundred million dollar job in hand can’t come up with a way to keep a home court advantage!
Their job is to pocket the money, not enhance the experience

It is not the only arena that provides a home court advantage. It is a moot point anyway, we don’t have the money to build a new one.

It seems most fans want either:

A) a brand new facility, or
B) just leave the RAC unchanged

Fortunately, Hobbs commissioned a survey and will soon find this out.

After which he will do "C" ... take 1000 seats away from loyal fans who endured the likes of Kevin Bannon etc. and sell them to wealthy "fans" who will likely be more interested in their sushi and wine selections than what's going on in the game.

The RAC is 46 years old. The proposed changes strike me as putting lipstick on a pig. Granted, it's OUR pig and I LOVE it! So, please Hobbs ... pick either A or B.

200 million?? Where is that number ftom!?

I just think it’s embarrassing to have a 8k arena. Would have thought we at least push towards 9k
When the RAC opened in 1977, it sat between 9k and 10k. Over time, the RAC had to meet certain codes and new laws such American Disability Act. That reduces the capacity. Now revenue is the problem. To earn enough revenue, Rutgers may have to sacrifice total capacity for revenue-generating seats that are fewer in number. That revenue will help Rutgers to compete with other schools.

Unless fans take a step to contribute to the a new arena or pay more (tickets, parking, donations, etc ) to improve Rutgers' current situation, things will remain the same. People are upset with current Rutgers officials, but the root of the problem lies with Freddy G, and previous school presidents. It may serve all of us fans, alumni, and supporters to move in the same direction for once and do what is necessary for the long-term health of the program.

Teams that have larger seating still have a enormous home court advantage.Purdue,Illinois,Michigan ,Michigan State are just four names and Indiana and Wisconsin also apply.

It is an absolute disgrace if RU throws away our home court advantage and caves into caring more for making money than keeping our loyal fans who have supported RU for many many years. I have been a loyal fan and contributor to RU for 56 years. I have only missed 4 RU home games since the Athletic Center opened in 1977. I will not be happy if I have to pay $ 250 or $ 350 for each of my two tickets for every home game and I get pushed back farther from the court. I love my seats and realize that we need to produce more money but to take the chance to lose many of our loyal fans which will probably destroy the home court advantage that we have I feel is just WRONG. If I have to pay $ 250 for each of my two season tickets it will cost $ 500 a game or $ 8,500 for 17 home games. It will be hard I feel to sell out an entire arena charging that much money. I hope it never comes to that. Hopefully Pat Hobbs will realize he might make a huge mistake!

That's sort of what Hobbs said, and a couple of these jokers are freaking the F out...
