Interesting thread from the WSU board (linked)

Im a fan of locker room mayhem for the opposing team. Lets hope theyre in complete disarray. Tired, frustrated and disoriented from the flight and from drama.

Just replied over there - not sure where they're getting this idea that we're "imploding".

Eh, they aren't familiar with NJ.com's reporting style which has nurished this wild fire. I guess you can just take anyone's word for it over the internet.

If RU doesn't drop 50 on this west coast abortion Flood should leave the keys to the red Escalade at the Hale Center and walk home.

The Pac 12 seems to be a schizophrenic conference with some particularly obnoxious trolls. As a Northwestern fan, the class displayed by the Stanford coaches and players in contrast with those of Cal and Arizona State has been amazing. I understand ASU has cleaned up their act a little lately, so maybe I'm not being fair to them. A Cal troll named Droski is so lame that many of us on the NU board hope we never play them again. With regard to the Washington State thread, the attempts of a few guys who've probably never been east of the Rockies to diss Jersey are pretty amusing, as are the comments about your "imploding" program. I've watched Ohio State "implode" themselves to a national championship the past few years.

Borderline use of "exacerbate," but incorrect use of "aggravate." One aggravates an injury and irritates another person.
My, how irritating of you to point that out.

One of the definitions of aggravate is to rouse to displeasure or anger. While that is not the preferred definition, it is not incorrect to use aggravate in that context.

Yes, it's more non-standard than incorrect, but most usage guides out there discourage the use of aggravate in that context and every editor will follow the guidance I posted above. That said, English is a living, growing, changing language and eventually aggravate and irritate might become interchangeable. But not yet.

To me, the connotation of "aggravate" is closer to "make aggressive/angry" than "irritate" which is closer to "cause discomfort".

I wonder if gamer culture will have any impact on the usage, given that "aggro" is used in MMORPGs and strategy games (primarily World of Warcraft, but it's spread) when a player draws near enough to NPC enemies to make them attack. "Aggro" is a shortened form of "aggravate" or "aggression".

That thread on their board shows you just the kind of damage that Politi and nj.com have done to this program. It stretches that far. It's all those guys know about our program. Nj.com's nasty attitude and writing style has been adopted by nearly every national media writer over the last two years towards us, with the exception of a few college football "insiders." You can see it in every article written on ESPN and and CBS sports about us, or that mentions us. An ESPN article was dumping on us for putting up 63 points this weekend like it was some unfair massacre. Almost every power 5 program did the same this past weekend.

What exactly did ESPN want us to do. The quarterback handed the ball off to running backs in basic plays for the entire 4th quarter, and we went deep into the bench. Did they expect us to always take a knee and keep our defense on the field for almost the entire time?

Which always surprised me that so many on this board defend their hyperbolic headlines. That is all anybody remembers. So Schiano had a lucrative secret contract and Mulcahy misappropriated funds is still generally accepted even though neither happened. But that's the way the headlines sounded.

The words are synonyms, completely interchangeable. Not just in the future. Now, as well as the past.

verbverb: exacerbate, 3rd person present: exacerbates, gerund or present participle: exacerbating, past tense: exacerbated, past participle: exacerbated

Well said Virginiarufan. I would love to see a NJ com troll respond to this!

You use a different icon when posting on other boards?
Every different board requires you to redo all of your settings, unfortunately. Not sure why they set up the new version of the board software this way.

I've seen more than enough examples of your butchering of the Mother Tongue to know to ignore anything you have to say on the subject. Just because words are listed as synonyms does not mean that language experts consider them interchangeable - they don't in this case - please read either of the links I posted.

My hope is that Hamilton doesn't have to do too much this game and can heal more for ttfp game. So I'd like a nice lead early with the game never in doubt. Which is asking a lot. Maybe Wazzu's QB had problems because he is a hot house flower that doesn't like weather and maybe he'll have a fine day this Saturday and look like a great QB. Maybe he is a Nova and we just saw "Bad Falk" last week. Anything is possible here.

Hamilton has been ruled out.
