Wrestling LIVE - Rutgers vs. Maryland Updates

Great job by Aguilar, Angelo, Janzer and Colucci. Aragona clearly hobbled and pulled out a win. If healthy, he wins that by a wider margin. Alvarez won but I'd like to see more O. MVB and Pagano looked bad. Grello looked like Grello...little offense. Donner looked like Donner.
Just got home, agree with your assessment.
-Grello, I called it at the beginning of the third, this is where he stalls his ass off. Same Grello three years running.
- Pagano, not sure where he got the idea going upper body was his strong suit, as that's not what got him to the #14 ranking.
-MVB what can you say, placeholder who will get to .500 and that's about it.
-Donner's a career backup so he did what he could.
-JoJo still having problems on bottom.

The rest did OK with some bright spots. Overall a ho hum win against the worst team in the B1G. Job accomplished but nothing to hang your hat on.

O and I forgot to mention, well done to all the fans that attended. That place had a real good crowd for a bad opponent. You all continue to make this an event to be at.

Was speaking with a fan tonight, and he brought up how well Nic Aguilar was doing this year coming off a redshirt. He felt as if Coach Goodale should have done the same with Sammy, Jojo, and Turley. Curious to hear what you all think about that. The rookies in this lineup are certainly holding their own, but there’s definitely evidence of some development in redshirts such as as Aguilar and Billy Janzer. Thoughts?

Yes on Turley and JoJo. No on Sammy. Turley wrestled 182 last year. A year to develop physically and find his best weight would have made sense. With JoJo we had Lipari so no need for JoJo right away. Sammy is by far the best option at 133. And, this might be his only year at 133. He is tall for the weight and has room to fill out. He could redshirt next year if Nick returns. I would consider pulling Kanniard out of redshirt based on results over the next month.

Heard Colucci did the Schiano chop after his major win. Anyone here confirm that?
He totally did that, right in front of me. I looked around at the people near my seats to jump for joy with them, but they were putting on their jackets and either didn't see it or it didn't register with them. And as I was walking out of the RAC there was a dude handing out block R magnets to everyone, and I took one, then asked him if I could have half the stack he had since I give them to a lot of people. He said I could have just one more, but not half the stack, since "Schiano wants everyone to have one." I was elated to hear that Sir Greg is already managing these details. Mind you, at a wrestling match the staff was doing what Greg wanted. This is good for athletics all the way around.

It's pretty clear our weakest weights are at 157 and 165. Hoping Turley can get it together but I think his best weight is at 174. MVB hate to say it just is a .500 wrestler. He'd be fine off of the bench, but not a full time starter. I bet we see Kanniard start at 157 by the time 2020 rolls around.

Schiano's attention to detail is incredible. Having an uber popular wrestling team is a tremenous asset in his quest to revive RU football and make it even stronger this time in a true P5 conference. Greg definitely has some new, unique weapons at his disposal this time around, and that's not including being in the B1G.

He certainly did!!! But when I was group texting my tailgate group about Colucci’s Chop, I walked right by the guy handing out the Block R magnets. I asked my wife why she didn’t grab some and she said we have enough. I replied, we can never have enough.

Don’t really see the point of potentially pulling Kanniard’s redshirt. Not even sure he’d be an NCAA qualifier this year. Let him continue to do well in the opens/unattached and let him begin his varsity career next year.

JoJo should have redshirted but it really doesn’t sound like the coaches had much of a choice.

Turley can go either way. He’s been alright but weight being an issue, another year of training may have helped but he also did a prep year so a lot of this could be on him.

Alvarez looks ready and can redshirt next year with a Suriano return.

If Turley can make the weight let him wrestle; I like Donner’s effort, but he has little more upside at the point. Definitely redshirt Kanniard; him and Van Brill are equal at this point. MVB does have more upside, and we will need him next year at 157. Also, not sure Kanniard would make the NCAA’s this year, but he did knock off a two-time qualifier yesterday.

Sounds like Turley is making weight the hs way, cutting a lot in few days. Goody wants a disciplined cut so he doesn’t blow up and then starve down

I would've because the goal is to AA in March 4xs and all 3 would've had a better chance at that after a redshirt year, like Ashnault did.

He's not. Coach knew this match was in the bag so sat him and used it as a learning experience. It's like in football when guys do something wrong they get suspended for the game against the FCS opponent.
