I was just noticing on kenpom that they now have a component called “Luck”. I don’t remember seeing that before. Rutgers is rated the 207th luckiest team in the country. I went to the glossary page and ithe definition is.....

Luck – A measure of the deviation between a team’s actual winning percentage and what one would expect from its game-by-game efficiencies. It’s a Dean Oliver invention. Essentially, a team involved in a lot of close games should not win (or lose) all of them. Those that do will be viewed as lucky (or unlucky).

These analytics are getting out of hand. Why not create one on how refs impact the game.[winking]

Kenpom has had luck for years. I think Maryland was No. 1 in luck 5 or 6 years ago. The more clothes games you win the higher you ranked in luck on kenpom

Any luck formula should include the propensity to bank in 3-pointers.

And conversely, the “unlucky” formula should include a metric for “team with the most 3-pointers banked in AGAINST them.”

RU has to be in the running for that one.

Kentucky should be #1 for luck. Big-time talent doesn’t arrive there year after year by accident. One of these days one of the investigative TV shows (on a network that does not carry NCAA hoops) will identify the money trail and/or series of fortuitous events that a recruit and his family and hanger-ons experience that the NCAA never sees or chooses to ignore.
