OT: 2019 Mets Season Thread

Seen on the Twitter:

Preseason Mets: BVW states that his goal is to eliminate as many "ifs" as possible.

In-season Mets: Coming in to pitch, bases loaded, ninth inning, tie game - Drew Gagnon!

Let's start with pulling Vargas after the home run. Even Keef said that Vargas was pitching well, why take him out in that spot for Gsellman? What did that do? It strained an already strained bullpen. Pushed Familia to pitch an extra couple of outs more than he is used to and almost cost the Mets the game.
Honestly I feel like it's a no-win with some of you guys. Cause one thing I'm sure about.......if he had left Vargas in and the next batter got an extra base hit and eventually scored you and others would be killing him for that. And I say that as someone who isn't a fan of his.

I'm normally not critical of players (except for Reyes and d'Arnaud) and managerial moves. Players have bad games and stretches. Managers make good and bad moves. But the use of the bullpen has been suspect in several games this year, no?

I don't disagree re: the bullpen. Think it's ridiculous to have 2 of your top guys out there not available in the same game. I'm talking just specifically this circumstance with Vargas.

I think that some of the bullpen problem is that Avilan has been useless except in mop up roles. Mets were counting on him as the second lefty out of the pen. In Wilson's absence, Avilan's ineffectiveness is magnified.

Seems the bullpen is the Achilles heel of several teams in NL East. Hope Gagnon is more than a flash in the pan.

I’m out of rip Vargas mode because he’s delivered better results of late than the supposed ‘aces’ of the staff, but if you can generally only be counted on to pitch 4 or 5 innings every 5 days that is a problem.

Is it outs or number of pitches? Didn't he get out of his first inning with just 7 pitches??

Not sure what it is now but for the first few starts, they would not let him get into the 3rd time through the batting order. A couple of starts ago, they let him go 3 batters into the 3rd time through and a bit deeper yesterday.
I am baffled how this guy basically ate through innings before he got here.

Why do you bring up Andy Pettitte at the end of his career after he has won nearly 200 games. Andy Pettitte can’t pitch the 8th inning. Why don’t you bring up Maddux or Randy Johnson.
You really mean to tell me Joba is one of the 5 best pitchers in baseball. What are you basing that on. 30 innings? There are 3 better than him in this town.

Enough of Calloway. Some managers learn from their mistakes. In the case of Calloway, it's repeat the same mistakes expecting different results. That's the sign of an idiot

We went from winning 3 out of 4 against reds to possibly losing 3 out 4 at home none the less.

FIRE CALLAWAY NOW

Please stop putting a closer in when you don't have a lead. Please,
Using the closer in a tie game in the ninth inning, at home, is the MLB standard. Every team in the majors does it. Now you can argue that that doesn't make it right. But if it's wrong, then every manager is wrong, including some who are worshipped in this thread.

Exactly what mistakes are you referring to? Trying to win the game by using your best pitcher?

I'm talking collectively over time based on his decisions. Diaz can't get 6 outs, but Famila can. Even Stevie Wonder can see that's a problem. The way he blew through the bullpen in the first month of the season last year.
I thought Vargas pitched well enough to finish the inning yesterday. Also had Vargas finished the inning, Calloway could have pinch hit for Vargas without wasting Gsellman in the sixth. Gsellman could have pitched the 7th and 8th in innings leaving the only the 9th for Familia. Calloway is supposedly a guru when it comes to handling a pitching staff, but since his arrival the performance of the staff has regressed.

To be honest, I don't like Calloway. I never did from the minute he was hired.

I dont think I've ever seen that in a MLB game where an opposing player taunts the home fans at the conclusion of a win like Winkler, Winker, Twinker or whatever his name is did.

A rational, cogent response. I don't agree with all of it, but my agreement is not required.

Yeah, can you imagine if there were actually fans there? He was mostly taunting empty seats.

I just hate the way Callaway coaches. Even when we win the first 2 games of the series, he always seems content to lose the third. The players deserve a coach with a winning mentality and killer instinct.

Don't forget Vargas's previous start where he let Vargas hit with runner on base, only to remove him in the next inning with 2 outs. Wasted a run scoring potential. When he made mistakes last year, it could be passed as a first time manager. This is his second year. No excuses. Cut our losses before this season gets out of hand and we waste another prime year of our pitching staff.

I am trying to figure out exactly what you are talking about. The best I can come up with is that Callaway is a player's manager, and they tend to be unpopular with fans. We like the Lou Pinella types. Fiery! Throw helmets! Break water coolers! Knock over buffet tables! Where's Wally Backman when we need him?

Problem is, today's multimillionaire ballplayers tend to view guys like that as jokes. There's a reason why Wally Backman's in the Indy leagues.

Am I reading this situation correctly?

Saw that as well. Next time he is up to bat he needs to have a ball thrown at his cocky, obnoxious head.

This team can royally annoy. When giving up billions, they score billions-1. Now they can’t score a stinking run or two without the pitcher delivering it.

Ok Noah pitching a shutout thru 8. 93 Pitches and velocity still good. Do you send him out for the 9th with Winker leading off or bring in Diaz. I say let Noah finish but I am old school.
