Jury still out on BVW - at this point, Diaz/Cano trade seems to be a winner but Cano's last few years may tell the real story. Keeping Alonso up at start of season, thus giving up a year of control was also huge and Sandy would not have done it. Wilson was pitching decent which is better than anyone else in BP not named Diaz. JF- looks completely lost and I thought it was a good move to have him come in as setup man but looks bad now. Davis was a good pickup, not trading Rosario/Conforto/Alonso/Nimmo/McNeil also huge. Beginning of year, thought we had a big time C but starting to wonder now.
Best thing to be said so far. Any given day, we can put a top to bottom lineup out there with no auto outs. But...we have an idiot for manager who will bench any player that gets 3 hits in a game.

I have seen Travis throw the ball into center field. Devin at least made good throws. With some of our pitchers Ivan Rodriguez would have trouble throwing people out.

Mets blew out their bench in the 7th today. Three straight pinch hitters, only one of whom actually got to swing the bat. I thought Callaway was an idiot - but then it worked! Maybe he does know more about baseball than I do - although that is hard to accept!

Callaway may still be. Let's see if he can get Syndergaard and deGrom back on track. Starting pitching is woeful outside of Matz.

I think we need to fire Callaway. He has made too many questionable moves. It would be one thing if the unconventional moves work but when this team underachieves the way they have been, the manager needs to go. I would love to see us bring in a Maddon type
of experienced manager to right the ship. The pieces for a competitive team are in place. We can’t have a manager ruining it.

Matz is the ace of the starting rotation right now. And some Mets fans were hating him early on.

Matz and Wheeler are carrying this staff. Complete opposite of the expectations. I am hoping that deGrom and Syndergaard will improve, but manager and pitching coach change may be needed.

Must a bit strong, but important. Expecting another 2 of 3 brew crew whoops next weekend.
Theyre in a f***ton of trouble if they cant get 2/3 from the Reds. They'd be at least .500 in May in a divison thsts wide open this year. Esp when they may have another 2/3 losses to the Breweres on consecutive weekends.

Some cautionary news. The division just got tougher. Atlanta has acquired and activated Jerry Blevins.

Former Mets GM Jim Duquette made a statement today after the game that caught me off guard. Duquette said Calloway was smart to have Ramos there for Matz today. Calloway's decision on the batterymates does impact the pitcher. Matz said he was in sync with Ramos as he caught every game for Matz except one. Ramos could sense the rhythm of Matz and make adjustments as the game unfolded. As for Thor and deGrom, Ramos has caught most of their games, but never back to back. Could this explain why Thor and deGrom have been piss poor of late?

4 game set

I hope the news on cano is ok tomorrow. Though X-rays were negative, his hand was swollen and calloway said they are concerned. He ll have another mri tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Ridiculous that was a called swinging strike today and the other pitch where he was hit on hand earlier in the week. As Gary said in the broadcast, clearly the bat was on his shoulder and he was twisting his body to get out of the way, and he was not swinging.

Let Ramos catch the big 4 as much as possible. Let Nido handle Vargas.

The Mets got some good news with second baseman Robinson Cano on Monday.

The left-handed slugger revealed that his MRI on his left hand was negative and hopes to be back in the lineup in "a couple of days."

Cano said there is still significant swelling but would try to swing a bat later on Monday.

"It feels good," Cano said. "Swelling is going down. Maybe [sitting out] one day, two days."

He's been plunked far too many times already this season. I haven't noticed anything like him standing particularly close to the plate.

Opposing teams have pitched the Mets inside more than normal. Unlike most years Mets were power hitters who stood off the plate, so pitchers could work the outer half of the plate with less fear of a mistake pitch. Gone are the power only guys. The Mets' hitters are more likely to stand closer the plate for better plate coverage. Pitchers are going more inside so they can reclaim the outer half of the plate.

10 pitching changes in Mets gamevtonight between 2 teams. What a joke this league is.
Actually, ten pitchers, therefore eight pitching changes. I assume your problem is with the mid-inning pitching changes which extend the time of the game. That was all the Reds. Mets didn't make any mid-inning changes.

You may be a little happier next year when the three batter rule is implemented. Or not.

Why did they bring in Diaz in a tie game when he pitched the previous 2 days. Callaway is really pissing me off. He loses more games due to his managing then any other manager.
It is standard practice for the home team to use their closer in the ninth inning of a tie game. 30 out of 30 managers make that move with a rested closer. So the question is whether Diaz can pitch three days in a row without losing effectiveness. Some can, some can't. I know the Mets have made a big deal about never using him more than one inning, but they've never said anything about not using him three days in a row.

If you're going to pin this defeat on Callaway, then you've got to give him credit for the win on Sunday, which was the direct result of his managerial decisions. Works both ways.

On Calloway: Why does he continue to use familia in the 8th inning rather than lugo. I have no problem with Calloway using Diaz in the 9th inning tonight but I do question why he had him pitch on Saturday when mets were down several runs.

The answer to your second question is that prior to Saturday, Diaz had last pitched on the prior Monday. He had four days off, and needed the work to stay sharp. That's the dilemma with closers. Sometimes you have to use them just to give them the work - and then they get more work than they can handle.

Re your first question, the Mets are going to give Familia a long leash. They just are. They have too much invested in him not to. Let's see how he's doing a month from now. He's going to get at least that.

Agree with both. I also wonder that knowing 18 batter Vargas is going today made him want to rest some of the longer inning guys.
Though, the Reds may be a team that Vargas has his best game of the year. lol
To be honest, the whole Met team just looks tired right now. And though I love a hometown guy, it all started when Frazier came back and we sat Davis. At this point, cn we find a way to get the kid back in there. I don't even care that he sux in the field.

I get so tired of seeing the Mets hitters flailing away at pitches just inches off the ground. Frazier look like the same player he was last year. Will hit the occasional home run but otherwise not do much and strike out a ton while showing a startling lack of plate discipline for a veteran. And this team needs Conforto as a former 1st round pick and corner OF to be a star. Not just an average player.

To be fair- Met's are in the top 5 of NL in BA/OBP/BB but also K's...

As for Conforto- He had a big year last year after a horrific start and is on pace for a really good year stat wise. But...he has to become the player who steps it up and carries the team on his back when everyone else is slumping.

I never understood why many on here were happy with the Familia signing simply because he would not close. You still have to get outs.
As @yesrutgers01 points out the Mets are hitting.
Again it is still early. In their last 10 games no team in the NL East had a record over .500. After tonight 5 months to go.

Familia does get outs and he's been a very good RP season to season. If you want to get on him for some of the playoffs stuff fine but let's not act like he has been a bad overall RP in his career.

Vargas going today going to kill our bullpen again though. I still can't believe we went into the season with this guy as our 5th starter.

A couple of things...in regard to JF, he just looks a bit off right now and we have seen him have stretches like this before. What concerns me is that we are seeing some of the Met's VERY good pitchers having such prolonged stretches at the same time. Noah and Jacob going through the past two weeks the way they have along with someone like JF and even an inning like Wheeler had yesterday- gives me concern about the coaching.

As for Vargas...mixed bag. He is actually holding his own as a 5th starter at this point. BUT...a 5th starter does need to eat some innings. And he is being paid like a 2nd/3rd starter.
