OT: 2022 World Cup Thread

It was funny how he had to correct it on the fly.
Even the announcers aren't sure how it works.

Did he say he didn't graduate high school?
Did they teach 2022 World Cup tie-breaker rules senior year at his HS in CA? 😀

I actually see Donovan as the most intelligent, by far, of the trio of him, Dempsey, and Lalas.

Similar odds to Trump winning the presidency in 2016.
One of the cleverest multi-layered trolling posts this year. 🤣

100% Donovan is the guy to cheat off of in class from that group.

I was kinda thrilled by how Mexico fared in this WC. Complete garbage for two matches - they never deserved to go through. Problem is, neither did Poland nor Saudi Arabia.
Poland has a tough draw against France. I guess we will see how they fare. I'll be rooting for them.

Saudia Arabia had one good half. They didn't deserve to advance.

Is that a new tie breaker? I thought goals scored was the next one after goal differential.

I think the tiebreakers are tweaked every so often. These are the 2022 tiebreakers. I think the third is interesting - head-to-head results is only the third tiebreaker.

  1. Overall goal difference: Superior goal difference in all group matches;
  2. Overall goals scored: Most goals scored in all group matches;
  3. Head-to-head points: Most points in group matches between tied teams;
  4. Head-to-head goal difference: In group matches between tied teams;
  5. Head-to-head goals scored: Most goals scored in group matches between tied teams;
  6. Disciplinary points ('Fair Play'): As per a FIFA formula based on yellow and red cards;
  7. Drawing of lots.

didn't see it...but it is amazing to me that someone so absolutely amazing at scoring from open play and direct free kicks is so jarringly average at penalty kicks.
Agree... you'd think even average players would be able to repeatably bury these into a corner. At a minimum I'd think you'd always want them high or low to have the best chance.

Average penalty takers hot at a 75% or so rate. Messi is at 78%. CR7 is 84%. Harry Kane is around 85%. Lewandowski is near 89%. Bruno fernandes is basically 90%. It's a bit comical.

Some of the USMNT players showed tremendous class and compassion after the match when consoling Iranian players.

The US Soccer Federation is as badly run as any of those types of organizations (I am talking about you, NCAA), and some of the women’s team lose support for their team by getting too political, but the players on the men’s team have for the most part been pretty easy to root for.

I am sure the fact so many of the men were born or spent time in other countries helps them handle situations like this better. They had to have noticed what the Iranian players have gone through, with their families being threatened.

I saw that there were actually some spontaneous celebrations that broke out in Iran over the US win, because people didn’t want the ruling regime to get the satisfaction of the national team winning while they are oppressing people.

I realize it takes alot to get to the 'drawing lots' scenario but that's really bad. They should find additional play-based options or something even if they're a bit of a stretch, that can be used before leaving it purely to chance.
Total Possession time in offensive side of the field?
Overall Total possession?
Shots on goal?

If Team USA can pull off the upset against the Dutch, it will set up some great buzz for 2026's WC right here at home.

  • Sports knows no geopolitics. Some of the Iranian players may have played with some of the American players in various leagues.
  • Funny comment from Pulisic. Unfortunately, hip pointers aren't an easy heal. I fully expect The Dutch to bump him any chance they get. Just gamesmanship. Soccer is not a game for wimps.

I can’t believe how many point blank goals Lukaku has not finished in this Croatia game…like 3 of them. Morocco is winning the group currently. Another surprise outcome if it sticks.
I like Belgium (especially Kevin D since it's hard to root for anyone on Man City lol), so it was really tough to watch them play so poorly in general and to then have lukaku miss so many chances he'd normally score on (although to his credit he was creating way more chances than they had b4 he came on). Morocco definitely deserved first. Wished Canada had played better in the group though.

Amazing that Mexico is out

Ochoa may need to revisit that “man in the mirror” quote 😁

Why is it amazing? What have the done in the last few years to make anyone think they should make the knockout stage? IMO they are always overrated and have really done nothing for as long as I can remember.

They had a long run of always advancing to the knockout stage and always failing to win once they get there, so this is the end of that streak.

One of my best friends is an Equadorian soccer nut who never tires of saying that never has there been a team like Mexico whose fans talk them up as being so great yet have actually accomplished so little.
