OT: 2023 NCAA Bowl Games Thread 12/16-1/1

When Beckham made his famous catch vs Dallas, the NFL was in middle of deciding whether or not to ban new, super-grippy gloves that players were using. With all the attention OBJ's catch received, NFL decided to allow gloves and one-handed catches are pretty routine even if still impressive . Even Army is making highlight one-handers

The WR from WKU decides to remove his gear and not to play the 2nd half because the team was losing so bad ooops I mean for "Precautionary Reasons" and then his team comes back from 28-0 to win the game without him. HAHA.. hope his teammates ignore him all night.

He’s there all time leading receiver. Are you sure he wasn’t hurt

ODU's HC is the former OC for Penn State. Franklinized? 😬 @PSU_Nut -Ricky Rahne, Kirk Ciarocca as your OC. You MUST choose one--who you going with?
Good question. Tough call because neither of them is clearly better. I like Ciarocca run game better and I like Rhane passing game better. I felt like Ciarocca had no intermediate passing game. Everything was either deep or short. Rhane run game was to read focused and slow developing. If I had to choose I would say Rhane. While both were predictable it felt like Rhane was a little more diverse. Rhane is also much younger and is a better recruiter of the two.

Northwestern?
Wisconsin? Not sure if Mordecai is back or not.
McCarthy will play.
Wonder who starts for Ohio State.
Nebraska- not sure who starts
Iowa- that QB that shredded RU will start?
Minnesota- from Richie and Mike's podcast--they had to pay the senior QB who had scheduled his wedding and plans to move to Arizona $30K to stay to play in their bowl game.
PSU-Allar will start?

Is that all?

Heading over the Frisco Bowl. No rooting interest but it's not often I get a college football game 2 miles from my house. Why not.
How's the game? Nobody watching Marshall v. UTSA? Entertaining game.

Marshall's QB is Cole Pennington, son of Marshall legacy Chad Pennington! Some parents like their kids playing QB where they did. Cole looks like his dad. He is a redshirt freshman, and this looks like his third start.

A lot of QBs who are kids of pro QBs (or at least a few), and none to highly rated:

EJ Warner- in Portal
Hasselback
Cole Pennington

And the UTSA QB Owen McCown is the son of former NFL QB Josh McCown.

UTSA up 21-17 going into half

Was an entertaining game. Cold, which made it tough if you didn't really have a dog in the fight. Nice stadium. Small crowd. Took me a bit to realize the QB situation. Pennington's kid looks just like him.

Interesting note.
Marshall's Rasheen Ali rushed for 92 yards on just nine carries in the first half. In a four point game the coach sat him out in the second half for "precautionary reasons". Had nothing to do with an injury he didn't want to take the chance that the kid would get hurt. The color announcer wasn't buying it and that if Ali told the coach to play him he would have. The announcer said either play in the bowl game or sit it out.

If I read the point spread correctly (notorious for misunderstanding those), it immediately went from "Maryland +2" to "Maryland+7" upon this announcement.

Billy Edwards won two games for the Terrapins last year when Taulia was hurt. I guess we'll see what he can do this time...

Who to root for tonight? 🤔
Guess Fran will not be coaching, according to the article? No Schrader either at QB. Go Bulls.

“We feel like our program is definitely trending in a great direction,” said Syracuse interim coach Nunzio Campanile, who took over for the fired Dino Babers and will continue to lead the Orange in the bowl game.

South Florida has gone 8-2 against Syracuse all-time, and this game is a reunion of past Big East rivals.

Syracuse’s two wins were close ones, 13-9 in 2010 and 37-36 in 2012. Take those away, and the average score of a Syracuse-South Florida game was USF 38, Orange 14.

The teams haven’t met since 2016.

I'm not sure if I'll see the game but I've been interested to see how Alex Golesh does there. He's a potential up and comer that worked under Heupel. USF won 4 games total in the previous 3 years under Jeff Scott and now has won 6 games and got to a bowl in Golesh's first season. That's a nice job, let's see if he can keep it up.

Also saw yesterday he got the highest ranked class in the G5 this year, although I think you always have to take portal into account as well these days for a sort of blended rating.

Going way, way back when USF was flying high in the Big East/American, we seemed to have their number. I remember there was a super rich couple in our town who were USF alums and never wanted to talk football with me because Rutgers did well against them. They really went downhill after Leavitt got fired, and never seemed to gain traction except for one year under Charlie Strong. Kind of weird considering the size of the school and the location. UCF has done well for themselves in comparison.

You MUST watch the game tonight and participate in the thread here! It's mandatory to keep your "membership" here. 😂

JMU QB is outstanding. 69% completion percentage. He’ll probably end up at IU following Cignetti but we could really use him.

Cignetti just got a transfer qb from Ohio who was the MAC player of the year last year.

He also signed a JMU decommit Alberto Mendoza and a 4 star Duke commit Tyler Cherry.

So who knows if he’ll take any more qbs.
