OT: 2024 NY Mets Season Thread

Most of us post in 1st person. Big Shelby posts in 3rd person.
1st person, 3rd person. I prefer the alternative: You open the Rutgers Rival thread on the Mets, and you read Shelby's post. You think to yourself, why does Shelby refer to himself as Shelby and sometimes Big Shelby. You decide that Shelby's probably big. You also wonder why Rutgers NJ thinks it don't matter. You decide that he's right, it don't matter, and you watch another video of Pete's home run. You smile.

It seems that the NFL does not exist this weekend in both Philadelphia and NYC,with the Eagles on a bye,the Jets playing overseas, and the Giants tucked away in the Great Northwest.
Radio stations are going all out over this series.Even the Yankees have become an afterthought.

As if there wasn't enough to tick off The Varsity. Think they just might be thinking this $hit can't be real from a team with zero hope and zero enthusiasm at the start of the season? Thinking it was a thrown away season ordered from Owner Cohen to clear the books for the off season. Reading those post from The Varsity just a few short months ago and yes, even our diehards is comical. With Stearns working his magic in a Steve Cohen ordered throw away season, imagine what the future holds NO MATTER HOW THIS SEASON ENDS!!!!!

While sitting on the set when he wasn't talking, I don't think I've ever seen Gary with such and ear to ear shi*eating grin on his face.
I couldn't see all of his ear to ear grin because it seems he has a huge cyst on one side under his ear that I was fixated on, lol.

Interesting take from an article in The Athletic:

"Over the last three seasons, the Mets have faced either Nola or Wheeler 15 times — and won 12 of those games. (Nola has pitched to a 4.25 ERA in those games, Wheeler a 4.79.) The Phillies are 104-68 in all other regular-season starts made by the pair."

As the Mets prepare to face their old friend Zack Wheeler, let's go back into time - the 2015 postseason, as reported by Mike Puma of NYP.

Wheeler was out for the season with TJS, but wanted to be a good teammate. Plus, he wanted the postseason experience so that it wouldn't be new to him when his time came. He requested to sit in the dugout for the postseason games. The Mets said no.

Wheeler then asked if he could travel with the team. The Mets said no. He'd have to pay his own way.

Finally, he asked for game tickets. Mets again said no. If he wanted tickets he could buy them himself.

Is it any wonder that he reportedly takes special joy in beating the Mets?

Ah, the days of the Wilpons. Glad they are behind us.

I object to this misuse here of the word "diehards." These folks, and there were many of them, are not diehards. To use that term with them would be to drain that term of any meaning. Rather, they are die-easys. It's not a great name to have applied to you, but those folks earned it. And there are lots of them.

Hopefully none of these guys care about his feelings...

Game one against Wheeler is a top matchup. On the other hand... Wheeler is 1-4 in his last seven starts against the Mets, including losing to them on September 22nd, the only time he faced the Mets this season. If you can steal game one against their ace, the whole series pivots to a huge edge for the Mets. Current Mets are batting .281 against Wheeler lifetime.

Iglesias 5-12 .417

Taylor 2-6 .333
Vientos 2-6 .333
Acuna 1-3 .333 (talk about your small sample size!)
Marte 7-23 .304
Nimmo 13-44 .295
Alonso 10-34 .294
Lindor 8-28 .276

Only three current Mets have faced Wheeler and not gotten a hit:
Winker 0-10 (no Ks, oddly)
Alvarez 0-2
David Peterson! 0-2

The Mets lineup should have some confidence that they can hit Wheeler. If you take out Winker and Peterson's numbers, the other Mets are a combined 48-159 (.302) against him.

Never thought of it that way, but you're right. They are Die-easys, love it. Now can you help me come up with a better name for The Varsity?

Hope Senga is sharp and like he looked in his one start earlier this season. Not sure I love this idea overall, seems a little too high risk for a team with great mojo right now. Worst case he's very rusty in a raucous environment and starts us out in a hole.

Mendoza has pushed the right buttons all season, so if he's good with this obviously you need to trust him.

It's funny how being a sports fan can make old men jump for joy like little kids. Last night was glorious.

Exciting development that Senga is starting game 1. I agree he'll probably split it with MeGill.
I'd prefer Peterson to Megill. Frankly, anybody to Megill. If we can't use Peterson, can we use the other Megill and see if anyone notices. Maybe Magilla Gorilla?

Unfortunately their stench still remains!

I guess what do we have to lose…he’s not going to pitch more than an inning. Wonder what his stats are like against the Phillies.

Has anyone seen Jeff McNeil since he’s been injured ?

I haven’t seen him in the dugout or anywhere.

I’m surprised given how long he’s been with the team and given it’s only a broken hand injury.

Was just thinking about this today, and then came the tweet

I love it but think I have now seen the Howie
Just saw a tweet him and his wife welcomed a baby daughter today. Which would explain his absence from Milwaukee.
Dang- soooooo. Would she have made him sit out the first round? lol
