OT: 2024 Week9 College Football Games Thread 10/24-10/26 (Old Thread)

Glad we didn’t pay up for that.
The knock on him was he crumbled under pressure against the better defenses.

He is now even with 6 INTs and 6 points

EDIT- had that wrong- 5 INTs, but what's the difference in one more pick 6 when you already have five?

That’s why daddy had him take a step down in competition in an effort to put up gaudy stats in his last year of eligibility. Syracuse wasn’t even his high NIL bidder.

Big game tonight between UNLV and Boise for the inside track to the G5 playoff spot. Jeanty and more than 12 other starters were courted to leave (against the rules if a player not in the portal) but they all came back. Now they’re on a possible run to the playoffs.

And let's end the narrative that "Greg screwed up with this one in Kyle's own words:

“Coach Fran Brown, I’ve known him since I was in middle school,” McCord said. “I played football in South Jersey, and he’s a South Jersey guy. So he was at Temple, so he was always local, and he told me when I was in like 7th grade, I think he was like, ‘You’re gonna be special, man. Wherever I am, I want to be your coach.’

“And then Coach Nixon, who’s the offensive coordinator, he was in Philly with the Eagles when I was growing up, and I played youth football with his son. I was the quarterback, his son was the running back. So I’ve known Coach Nixon since I was 5 or 6 years old. And he recruited me when he was at Baylor, and obviously it didn’t work out, I went to Ohio State.

“And then the quarterback coach, Coach Nunzio Campanile, who was the head coach at Bergen Catholic up in North Jersey, wanted me to come up. He was on me in like 7th and 8th grade saying you could come up and go to school up there and he wanted me bad, but obviously I stayed in Philly. So kind of the three coaches that I’ll be working with there, I’ve known them for five, six, seven years and I’ve known Coach Nixon pretty much my whole entire life.”

NIL was a factor, but here's one other thing:

Asked if Syracuse’s favorable 2024 schedule played a part in his decision, McCord said he felt like he would have an opportunity to win by transferring there.

“Yeah, I mean, they said, with the guys that they’re gonna bring in, some of the guys they’ve got coming back, we’re gonna be able to make a serious run at it. And their recruiting pitch was, ‘Listen, we’re a quarterback away from being a serious contender in the ACC this year,’” McCord said. “And I looked at the schedule, and I saw it and I think it’s true. I think there’s definitely an opportunity for us to go out there and win some games.”

For posterity, here is my wager with @RU#1fan

I was off in my initial prediction- Cuse needs 3 more wins with Va Tech, BC, Cal, UConn and Miami remaining on their schedule. Best chances for 3 wins are UConn, Cal, BC, Va Tech. I may have to eat crow, but Don't sleep on Cal (despite their record). UConn will be a win.
Friendly wager?
I will eat crow live on this board if they win more than 8 games in the REGULAR season.
What you got?

Nice article from the Athletic on Navy and how they've adapted. As I like to say, figure out how to make it work with what you have. Hope they can pull off the upset against ND tomorrow.

Excerpts from the article:

When the NCAA in 2022 outlawed traditional cut blocks anywhere but inside the tackle box, taking away a vital tactic for the academies to make their option attacks work against bigger and faster opponents, the rule change created a concern that the programs’ offenses were about to become extinct.

Instead, they have evolved.

The Midshipmen are averaging 2.5 yards per play more this season than last (from 4.82 to 7.32), the second-best improvement in the FBS behind Indiana (plus-2.66 per play). Army is third with a 2.34 yards-per-play jump from last season.

At Navy, the mission was to merge the Wing-T with the more traditional flexbone triple-option.

“That’s been a lot of fun, seeing how creative we can be to morph those two offenses,” Cronic said. “Because, if you watch us, we’re triple, we’re jet sweep, we’re power reads, we’re in the (shotgun) running triple, we have some pro-style concepts, and then a lot of moving pieces, shifts, motions and things that come with that. So just trying to be as big of a pain as we can be from a preparation standpoint.”

This is no three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust approach. Yes, Navy is still running the ball a lot (46 times per game, sixth in the nation), but few teams have been more explosive. The Middies have 13 plays of 40 yards or more and are one of six teams in the FBS averaging at least two such plays per game.

“(Cronic) kind of found the perfect blend of the good things they did in the triple world with Navy, but then also bringing in all these Wing-T elements that kind of disguise it,” said Dan Casey, a former college football player-turned Xs-and-Os expert and author who has become a popular follow on social media for coaches at all levels.

“Because I think when you’re running the flex bone, sometimes you can run out of answers in the pass game. And I think that’s been the biggest shift for Navy this year is they haven’t run out of answers in the pass game.”

Screen passes, run-pass option, bootlegs, stuff that generally doesn’t show up in triple-option attacks — Navy uses it all, along with all those where’s-the-football running plays.

Wing-T is just not something you see a lot of at higher levels of football these days, but you’ll still find it in high schools because it can be effective in narrowing a talent gap and fairly simple to run.

“It’s plug-and-play,” he said.

Good win.

However, it was the D that helped Pitt win the last two games. Pitt's O only scored 17 points in the last 2 games against Cal and Syracuse when you subtract out the pick 6s.

I think the D has improved as the season progressed.

The O (Eli Holstein/Kade Bell) need to get back to scoring more points going forward.

I can't really criticize Eli because he has carried the O since arriving at Pitt. Brought Pitt back from potential defeat late in the games against West Virginia and Cincinnati.

Surprising accomplishment for a rs freshman QB (no experience) who only started play at Pitt under Bell's direction.

McCord (senior QB) did get over 300 passing yards in each of his 7 games but had a bad day against a good Pitt D.

Lots of excitement at Acrisure Stadium last night.

Will be watching the Rutgers/USC game tonight and will probably stay up late if the game remains competitive.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
Where did Holstein come from ? I don't see him in any of the recent Pitt recruiting classes.
Was he a walk-on ?

Guess Syracuse has not passed us by
You guys are too much.
What happens if we played Pitt right now ? Would be at least the same result or much worse for us.
I hate SARA more than anyone else but we are not a better program than them.
Unfortunately they have putrid UCONN on their remaining schedule so they will get to 6 Wins and a Bowl game. Us getting to a Bowl ? Not so sure.

BTW Sara’s next game is vs. V Tech. Hope the Hokies beat the pulp out of them.

As mentioned, he was a Rival 4-star recruit for Alabama who was the HS Player of the Year from Louisiana.

Remained at Alabama for one year (did not play) and then transferred to Pitt.

Not sure of the details involving his transfer.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

That wheel route has produced some big plays for BC this season. I think they had one go for a TD against Mizzou. Inside the Louisville 20.

20-10 BC

BC playaction for the TD

27-10
