I had the fortune of attending many good sporting events in my lifetime. Probably have to put the Buster Douglass- Tyson fight in 1990 at the top of the list. I was in Tokyo on business and was given tickets. No one expected this to be much. But wow. I was happy to see Tyson got knocked out.
A close second was Super XXI (this was the Denver-Giants Superbowl). Not a fan of either team, but the only Superbowl I ever went to.

Hearns vs. Hagler...great three rounds, but the lead up to the event was special also. Great atmosphere in Vegas.

Mine might be Super Bowl XXlll, 1989, when Joe Montana had 'the drive' and hit John Taylor to win the game in an exciting comeback against the Bengals. It was in Miami, and my good friend was a producer on 'Miami Vice', so we got face value tickets through his job, went to a lot of great parties, and partied all week, then saw maybe one of the best Super Bowls, at least up to that point

The National Championship Air Races in Reno every year. The fastest motor sport in the world!

2004 ALCS Game 6 Yankee Stadium ...Curt Schilling bloody sock game

Jets - Raiders AFL championship game, Shea Stadium, Dec. 29, 1968. (A much more exciting and close game than the great upset over the Colts 2 weeks later!)

1972 Stanley Cup Final Game, Boston v NYR. Orr, Espo, etc against Park, Gilbert, etc. Boston won 4 games to 2, showing why the were one of the most exciting NHL teams I ever saw. Bobby Orr beat the crap out of Park, figuratively and literally.

Probably the Red Sox clinching division against White Sox when Tom Brunansky made a sliding catch against Ozzie Guillen in right field. Or seeing Cam Neely scoring a hat trick at the old Boston Garden in his comeback year against, I think, the Rangers.

Two early ones I remember as kid, Joe Belino's last Army Navy Game (could it have been 1958 or 59?)and Cosmo Iacovazzi's last game at Palmer Stadium in 1964.

1977 Yanks beat Dodgers in game 6 of the Workd Series as Reggie hits 3 homers! My Cook College roommate's Dad got tickets but had a business trip------so all four guys in our apartment went instead! We didn't run onto the field , but we stood on the dugout!!!!

2009 ALCS game 6...SO many drunk people!!! Good game, too!

2003 Stanley Cup Final Game 7. To watch the Cup presented to the NJ Devils are moments I will never forget.

1976 NCAA Finals in Philly (semi-Rutgers related, after their consolation game). Indiana the last undefeated national champ. 12 rows behind the basket, $9.00 ticket, if you can believe it.

Was also at the 1999 Women's World Cup opening day @ Giants Stadium--until the final in the Rose Bowl, it was the largest attendance at a women's sporting event in history. Place was packed and rocking.

1986 World Series, Game Six. With my brother, a rabid Red Sox fan. We both died at least three times during that game.

1976 Chris Chambliss home run game against the Royals to send the Yankees to the World Series.
Promptly lost 4 straight to the Big Red Machine

Super Bowl v. The Pats in 2008.

(Drops mike)
My Dad picks up said mic and says into it he was at was at both XXV (Giants/Bills) and your game....then he drops it.

I was only at XXV.

Also saw the last Army/Navy game at JFK.

Two events for me. Being at Yankee Stadium on Oct 1, 1961 when Roger Maris hit his 61st HR on the last day of the season vs the Red Sox. Have never seen my Dad so excited.

The other was attending the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta GA. Nothing like it.

I'm assuming "best" = most exciting vs. most significant. June, 2013. South Durham (NC) vs. North Durham aka Bull City Little League Mayor's Cup. My son, who was 10 at the time, was on the SDLL Phillies. Majors division, mostly 11 and 12 year olds. The Phillies won the SDLL Majors tourney to get to the Mayor's Cup to play the champion of the Bull City Majors division. Game was played at night, 7:30 start, at Bull City. Game was a pitching dual, and defensive showcase. Tied 1-1 until the bottom of the 11th (almost 12:30AM the next day. Majors games normally go 6 innings). Bull City hit a two out, full count, walk of grand slam to win the game. Kids and coaches left it all on the field.

1989 NFC Divisional Playoff at Giants Stadium. Unreal atmosphere. Ending was heartbreaking.

Two:

1. Dwight Gooden v. John Tudor, Shea Stadium, September 11, 1985 - 1-0 in 10 innings, but actually an incredibly exciting game. The run scored off Orosco on a homer in the top of the 10th that was about a foot fair and a foot over the wall, and the game ended with a runner on and Tudor striking out Strawberry.

2. 15 seed Richmond v. 2 seed Syracuse, Cole Field House, March 15, 1991 - the first 15-2 upset in the history of the men's NCAA basketball tournament.

2000 game 1 WS Yankees vs Mets and 2001 game 4 WS Yankees vs D bags. Went to a few other WS games but these 2 were the best.

also went to a division game and ALCS game each year from 1996 to 2001. They were all great. I don't watch as much baseball anymore. Nothing topped the 1998 Yankees. I went to close to 30 home games that year and in my opinion no other team can compare. After all of that baseball I have been to the new stadium 2 times.

1989 Army-Navy at the Meadowlands (Navy won 16-13 on a last-minute FG). I'll never forget how intense and loud Giants Stadium was for the game.

Honorable mention: 1995 NJSIAA wrestling finals in AC and watching Belleville's John Perna, down 9-2 with 30 seconds left in the finals, hit an inside cradle for the pin and state title with like 17 seconds left in the match. Boardwalk Hall went nuts with a group of Belleville wrestlers/ fans storming the mat to celebrate with John, who had lost in the finals his sophomore and junior years.

Coaching our towns 7th grade Lax team that oldest grandson plays on this year to a 19-2 record. 2nd Beating Maryland in Basket Ball when played for Loyola against McMillan ect in the 70's (played BBall & Lax there). 3rd The NCAA Lax Semis in Philly this year Denver/ND overtime win.

1992 Game 7 of the NLCS--Braves vs Pirates. Sid Bream scores from 2nd on a hit by Francisco Cabrera as Barry Bonds' throw is just off the plate. Loudest I've ever heard an outdoor stadium.
As a bonus, apparently Andy Van Slyke had told Bonds to move to a different spot and Bonds allegedly gave him the finger.
Honorable mention: 3rd Leonard-Hearns fight at Caesar's Palace.(No, Caesar didn't stay there) Won a nice bit of money on that one.

1995 - New Jersey Devils - Game 4 - Cup Presentation
1998 - David Wells Perfect Game - Sat in the Bleachers
2000 - ALCS Game 6 - Yankees vs. Mariners - David Justice takes Arthur Rhodes Yard for a 3 run Home Run. I remember feeling the stadium physically shake like there was an earthquake.
2000 - Game One of the Subway Series - Or to true Yankees fan simply known as the Vizcaino game. I had partial Season tickets this year in the bleachers with my cousin, we went to game one and sold game 2 for $850.00 a piece which essentially paid for the entire years worth of tickets.
2003 - New Jersey Devils - Game 7 - Cup Presentation.

1986 World series at Shea Stadium, Game 6.
Watching that ball go thru Bill Buckner's legs was just priceless.

USA/Mexico at Columbus Crew Stadium - 2002 and first do the "Dos a zero" games. US wins at home vs Mexico for (I think the first time in qualifying) to advance to the WC.

Total pro-us crowd and the atmosphere was so charged you wouldn't believe it.

1999 Mets/Diamondbacks. Pratt with the 10th inning walk-off home run to send the Mets on to the NLCS. D-backs OF Steve Finley jumped at the wall, looked into his glove, hung his head, and Shea exploded. Upper deck was shaking.
