OT: NCAA College Football Games Thread 10/26-10/28 Thurs-Sat

Big Utah/OWregon game tomorrow. Whittingham is a very good coach and doesn't always get the publicity of others but he probably likes it that way. I think it will be a tough one for Utah but never know. It's at Utah and they're very good at home.

From the article:

Juxtapose that with Williams, the consensus No. 1 pick in next year’s NFL Draft making a reported $2.8 million a year in name, image and likeness earnings, and you’ve got the encapsulation of Utah always making do. As Whittingham said, you just have to keep playing. And Whittingham’s Utes have, once again, showcased that no program has done more with less in recent years.

While some schools may have to offer starring roles to prized recruits to finish a recruiting pitch, Utah often tells players that when they get to Salt Lake City they’ll be re-evaluated regardless of where they might’ve stood out in high school. Some are told even before they fax in their national letter of intent.

Walk-ons who are now starters are littered throughout the Utah lineup.

Starting running back Ja’Quinden Jackson came to Utah as a quarterback transfer from Texas.

Starting defensive end Connor O’Toole came to Utah as a skinny tight end from New Mexico.

And Utah’s latest how-the-hell-does-this-thing-work move is utilizing starting safety Sione Vaki as a running back/wide receiver/wildcat quarterback. In the past two weeks against Cal and USC, Vaki played both ways and became Utah’s most tantalizing offensive player, netting 226 rushing yards, 149 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

“There is this genuine belief that they’re gonna scrap and battle and find a way at the end,” said one Pac-12 coach, who was granted anonymity so he could speak candidly. “For decades, they’re gonna challenge you. They’re gonna make you earn it. Gonna get a targeting call every once in a while. And then there is this true ‘next man up’ mentality they have there. And it’s like, whoever pops up, they’re going, and they play well.”

Another article with UM saying he's he best in CFB. Regardless of what they do this year, he's up there.

Love Whittingham. Seems like a real lunch pail kind of coach. Hope Utah crushes the flailing Lincoln Rileys (every year).

Note, when they moved to the PAC in 2011, he did not have winning season in conference until year 4, and years 2 and 3 were tough sledding. Not a regular season losing record since 2013, and only one PAC losing season since 2014. Not a recruiting hotbed compared to the other teams in the conference. He did get 4 star Cam Rising over a list of impressive offers including Texas, Alabama, LSU, Michigan and others

They beat USC last week and he is a lunch pail coach. Their offense hasn't been good at all this year with the injuries and they're still making due. I saw that Oregon State game they lost and it was a struggle. Usually they're anywhere from solid to very good on offense but this year not so much.

Some of the injuries they had to endure and mentioned in that article. Also like the philosophy mentioned by Whittingham.

From the article:

That is, at some point in the months ahead and with the season in the far-off future, audibles will be forced upon the program. Adaptation is necessary when injuries occur, and in a sport as violent as football, the only certainty is that eventual need to adapt.

“If you can’t handle adversity, you’re not going to be very successful. It’s almost preparation. It’s not if but when it strikes, and how much of it you do endure,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said recently. “Whatever it is, you’ve got to just handle it. I think our guys develop that mentality early on in this program, and we stress it and emphasize it every single week, no matter who is available or not available. You’ve just got to keep playing.”

The No. 13 Utes (6-1), who host No. 8 Oregon (6-1) on Saturday, are beyond the halfway point of the season but have already ruled out all-conference athletes like quarterback Cam Rising and tight end Brant Kuithe from playing at all this season. Rising suffered a severe knee injury in the Rose Bowl against Penn State in January, and Kuithe hasn’t been able to return since suffering a torn ACL in September 2022.

That’s just the beginning of a list that has lengthened to exasperating levels.

In addition, Utah has lost its most versatile running back, Micah Bernard, LSU transfer running back Chris Curry, No. 2 tight end Thomas Yassmin, emerging edge rusher Logan Fano, Florida State portal addition wide receiver Mycah Pittman and, most recently, the heartbeat of one of the best defenses in the country: middle linebacker Lander Barton, who suffered a season-ending injury Saturday at USC.

And yet, the back-to-back Pac-12 champions are still in the thick of the race in the conference’s swan song

IIRC Cam Rising was a transfer to Utah, he didn't go there straight from HS.

Rising was before the portal but an example of why I don't have an issue with the portal. For most schools (maybe not Stanford, NW, the academies) you lose players and you get players. You can get contributors from the portal.

Well, that is a post-vacation, sleep-deprived brain fart by me. I saw all the USC blather in your post and skipped past Oregon. Utah is an easy team to root for. So is Cal. USC, UCLA, Oregon- they can all lose as far as I'm concerned.

Wow, what fall in offensive production. Granted, the are one game short in PAC12 games played, but 89 pts scored in 4 PAC games (22 pts/game), but only 74 pts allowed (18.5/game). Both are half the points scored/allowed by USC, and their points scored is second lowest in conference.

Last in passing yards/game in PAC at 161.7, but 5th ( and close to 3rd in rushing yards per game at 183.3). That's very Rutgersian (148.4 passing/179 rushing per game). Both teams near top of conference in defense too. Sign me up to be like Utah!

You are correct again, Sir! Redshirted 2018 at Texas, transferred to Utes in 2019. Here's a tidbit- in 2019, he competed with Jake Bentley for starting role. Jake and Chas Dodd are brothers.

I believe they've settled in on Barnes as the starter now so that might help them improve somewhat on offense if he stays healthy. Johnson might get some snaps but the uncertainty is removed.

I've mentioned before I'd keep Fifita in rather than going back to De Laura. Ride the hot hand.

The Cats, who haven’t finished with a winning record since 2017, have surged this month since freshman QB Noah Fifita took over for the injured Jayden de Laura. The 5-foot-10-ish Fifita has a live arm, like de Laura, but Fifita’s style is different. He is poised and under control, and since taking over, he has impressed coaches with how quickly the ball comes out of his hand, how accurate he is and his great reads.

Fifita is completing more than 75 percent of his passes and has an 8-to-2 TD-to-INT ratio.

IU got a first down or very close to it after the bad snap, things going their way today.

Oh so close, after review, it’s overturned and PSU gets the ball.
