OT: New York Mets 2023-2024 Off Season Thread

I have such a hope and fear for the Met's this off season...

Watching all this minor moves and no word on Alonso talks progressing.
Fear- Stearns is going all Brewers on us- and next thing we hear is he trades Alonso
Hope - It is building up for something big- Yamamoto/Snell and a + offensive player and hearing that a deal with Alonso is finalized.

It's funny- if it was my money- year the 20 bil or so...
I think I may actually go get Chapman at 3B - Mo to 2B, McNeil to LF - would still be worried about Marte in RF but made need to just figure that out.
Pitching- Yamamoto and maybe the other Japanese pitcher and not Snell but maybe one of the guys just a step below.
Bring Robertson back and go get a guy for that 8 spot.
And I am blowing Alonso away in a 8-10 year deal.

It could be a transition year if they miss on Yamamoto. Might try and reset the luxury tax at that point and try to integrate as many of the young guys as possible to see what they need going forward.

Not possible to reset the tax this year, with so much dead money on the books. Mets have $65M in dead money tied up in three players (Scherzer, Verlander, McCann). That's more than the Orioles 2023 total payroll - and they won 101 games!

Cot's Baseball Contracts projects that for luxury tax purposes (which takes into account the entire 40 man roster, plus benefits) Mets will be at $291M. That's without making any significant signings.

The luxury tax threshold is $237M. Mets are projected to be over the limit by $54M. Again, that's if they spend NOTHING.

So to get under the tax, Mets would have to:
  • Sign nobody
  • Trade Alonso
  • Somehow unload another $30M in salary, which is not possible. I mean it is possible if you want to trade guys like Senga. But the sad reality is that the guys whose salary the Mets would want to dump, have little or no market value.

But Cohen is the problem right?
Yep- LA goes $20 over the projected crazy ask…SD has basically bankrupted itself and Cohen is the problem.
I do think SO’s camp was behind the Toronto stuff. Made LA make a desperate move. He now makes more than some teams.

I don't think it was Toronto. Don't be surprised if it was Cohen that forced the dodgers into this insane contact lol

I am going by all the Toronto reports- seems like something a player agent would do...

That deal is BS. The Dodgers will pay Ohtani $2 million yearly while deferring $68 million. Ohtani will have $680 million deferred (in total) and won't receive it until the contract ends. How in the hell does the league (& players' association) allow this? This will let the Dodgers sign more top-line talent and not worry about the luxury tax. Meanwhile, players are not giving the Mets that discount.

Totally agree. This deal is bullcrap. Talk about opening a Pandora's Box.

The Dodgers DO have to worry about the luxury tax. For luxury tax purposes, the present value of the contract is straight lined over the contract life. Let's assume that the present value of the $700M contract is actually $500M. Under this assumption, the luxury tax base is $50M per year for the next 10 years.

EDIT: According to an article I just read, the actual luxury tax hit is $46M per year.

It also ****s every other player in the league- How would this make sense or be approved by the union and or owners?

Unreal,of course this would happen to a Mets rising star.
We don't know what "this" is yet. Hopefully not the worst. Although the fact that they sent him back to NY for further testing is troubling to put it mildly.

IMO referring to Mauricio as a "rising star" is premature at best. But certainly a promising prospect.

Not sure I see the concern here.

We now know that the $700M figure is fictitious. We shouldn't be surprised. Most of us thought that number was crazy. If there's one thing that the Dodgers are not, it's crazy.

The real number is $460M, give or take a few million. That still makes it the biggest contract in baseball history. How does that fvck any player in the league, never mind every player?

If he had signed with the Mets, the media and baseball would be doing everything in their power to disban the Mets.

At the very least, you'd have every Yankees fan screaming Steve Cohen is ruining baseball and circumventing the salary cap rules or something to that effect, lol

It's a unique situations because Ohtani is one of only a few players that could afford to defer so much money because he makes so much off the field.

MLB needs to fix their CBT calculation rules because this makes a mockery of them.

The concern is if it is true that they are only paying him $2 mil a year and deferring the rest.

Yeah, so?

Ohtani received a contract, which, if stated in terms of a 10 year immediate annuity, would be worth about $46M per year. The Dodgers are subject to CBT on that amount for the next ten years. I fail to see the injustice.

just saw the full deal- Dodgers are paying 46 per year toward the payroll tax. Curious how a deferral works- are the Dodgers also hit with any additional payroll tax from 2034-2043?
I also assume that at the end of this contract- he is 39...If he decided to play another year- he would get a new contract and Dodgers still on the hook for the full 68 mil as well?

Yes they're on the hook. The money is guaranteed. I don't believe there is a tax when they actually pay the money.

$46 million is easier to swallow compared to $70 million. IMO, that's a relief for the Dodgers when looking at the big picture (luxury tax). The difference allows the Dodgers to get another quality player for $24 million in additional luxury tax. It's better to have two players instead of one for that level of spending.

That is a big hit- on the positive side- maybe it forces Stearns to realize he is no longer working for the Brewers and has to go make a real move.
I believe he is starting to lose the fanbase very quickly.

Probably 6-9 months timetable for baseball player ACL. Will need to bring in a vet like Turner to compete for the job I'd think.

Stearns is losing the fanbase? He's been here for a month for crying out loud. Ohtani didn't want to come here and we don't have pitching to match NYY offer for Soto. Let him build his team for a few years before he loses the fan base geez.

yeah- he has made a whole bunch of just ehhh moves- seems like it is all going to hinge on Yamamoto - not what we are used to with Cohen

All because you played Vogel fat instead

He should’ve been up 4 to 8 weeks earlier and with 120-150 extra at bats he wouldn’t be playing now
