OT: New York Mets 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

Pipeline has Ryan Clifford ranked as the 7th best 1B prospect in the minors.

They had this to say:

Most to prove: Clifford
Part of the Justin Verlander trade with the Astros in 2023, Clifford struggled in High-A to begin last season before batting .231/.359/.456 with 18 homers in 98 Double-A games. But he also struck out at 30 percent clip overall (29 percent in Double-A) and he'll need to demonstrate that he can make consistent contact against upper-level pitching.

I suggest you stop taking all of these articles seriously until something really happens. You want to complain if Pete leaves and we do nothing I get it. Right now it's all a bunch of malarkey.

Stearns only gets us to the NLCS in his first year and we want to complain about his process? Ridiculous.
I don't take the article seriously. My one year with the Mass Marauders of the Arena League, I watch the GM undermine the HC Don Stock and players all year. He trade my boy Freddy Guions to Milwaukee to make a point he was the genius behind the organization's success. We finished 8-4 (playoffs) in spite of the GM. The GM made moves that had little to do with winning, but more so about he ego based on the success of the organization when it was known as Detroit Drive. A lot of the back and forth going on now may have been ego driven and has little to do with what is best for either side. Once you beat someone down to you view point, it doesn't benefit either side to push for more concessions. It creates a bitter divide and may spread to other parts of the organization.

Right but you dont know what numbers are real and what aren't. You have no idea if Stearns is beating Alonso into the ground. If they end up making a deal it will be palatable for both sides. If they don't then by all means flame on.

Enough info from both sides have been leaked to know now it's a "who has the bigger set of balls." You know as well as everyone else knows the Mets were clear they were willing to pay a little more as long as it was a short term deal. Pete and Boras have blinked and the years are in the Mets favor. Now it the dollar amount that must be settled. The Mets put out a number a few weeks ago and now it seems Boras has come back with similar numbers, but it seems the Mets have moved the goal post once again. I'm not in favor of either side because it's part of doing business in a professional sport. Still, you have be in denial to see the Mets are playing with fire after having won the battle they had with Boras and Pete. Any opportunity to strengthen the lineup is disappearing as other options sign with other teams. Stringing Pete along for $2 or $3 million less a year goes to the old saying, "swallow elephants whole, while choking to death over a gnat."

Please get Pete done... I'm begging.

My son is a baseball nut. He's obsessed. Alonso has been his #1 since he was four years old. He's got the jersey's, the cards, the fathead on the wall, the autographed framed Picture on his wall... he's 7, he loves baseball, loves the Mets, and loves Alonso.

I really don't want to crush him

It looks like the Blue Jays are willing to overpay for Pete. They’d be crazy to let Guerrero walk and get only a sandwich pick in return. I don’t understand their thinking.

I expect the Mets to sign at least one top RP, a lefty RP, a backup middle infielder and trade for another bat.

My son was like that with David Wright, so for your son’s sake I hope they sign him. More than 3 years and I’m out, however.

SNY reported it.
Meh. All SNY knows is whatever the Mets are choosing to leak to them. Nothing more, nothing less.

Both parties are leaking stuff through their chosen outlets. They are doing so for their own purposes. Not ours.

IMO the main thing that we don't know is: has Cohen actually given Stearns budget limitations? Does Stearns believe he only has $X left to spend, and if he spends it on Alonso, he cannot spend it elsewhere?

For 29 other franchises I would believe this to be true. With Cohen, who knows?

3 for 70 is insulting. Pete should get 3 for 90 and be done with it
Didn't the Mets offer 3 for 90 like two weeks ago? If both offers are true, then Stearns is being a d*ck by moving the goal post after having Pete by the balls already.

If Alonso is being offered more than 3/70 or whatever from another team why hasn't he accepted yet? Very possible he's turning down the most money from us again. We'll see when he signs with whatever team and at what money.

Even if the Mets don't re-sign Alonso, they must make at least one more move, solely for purposes of roster construction:

Right now the Mets have six guys who can only play OF or DH (Soto, Nimmo, Taylor, Siri, Marte, Winker). Plus two catchers. That leaves only five roster spots for four infield positions (Vientos, McNeil, Lindor, and two of Baty/Acuna/Mauricio). Mets would have no backup for Vientos at 1B.

That is untenable.

FWIW - The Times of India (honest!) has reported that Alonso/Boras has turned down an offer from the Angels of 2/$50M.

That ain't cricket. 🏏

I don't think Alonso's issue is the money as much as the years

I'm sure if we offered like 4 / 100 or 110 he'd do it

Stearns wants to move on from him so that Vientos and Mauricio can both start on the regular.

Mauricio is currently a doubt to start the year healthy so don't think so.

The market is the market. If Pete were getting years or the money he wants he'd sign. He's obviously not at this point.

Ideally, I would have liked Pete on a very short deal so we could move away from him quickly if he continues to decline. I just don’t understand this “home grown” stuff. This is a business and I don’t care if the players are from Mars, I just want the best we can get. I’ve worked for a very large pharmaceutical company for 35 years and loyalty has gone out the window decades ago (and I’m totally fine with that). Why is this any different.?

Maybe because I don’t follow J&J or BristolMeyers like I do for sports.

I have no attachment to either like I do for the Mets, Giants, Devils, etc.

My point is that I think the loyalty thing is silly, especially when players are getting paid these large amounts of money. The millions of dollars players like Pete have already received should help him or any other player get over their hurt feelings, when people making a fraction of that deal with it every day.

As far as the fans go, I just don’t understand why people care if a top player came up through the Mets farm system or anywhere else…but that’s me.
