OT: New York Mets 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

My point is that I think the loyalty thing is silly, especially when players are getting paid these large amounts of money. The millions of dollars players like Pete have already received should help him or any other player get over their hurt feelings, when people making a fraction of that deal with it every day.

As far as the fans go, I just don’t understand why people care if a top player came up through the Mets farm system or anywhere else…but that’s me.
For certain pieces, sure. Especially like a Gary Carter.

But I like the idea of a team of Mets (I’m old enough to remember these…Tidewater, Jackson and Lynchburg). The romantic part of it is still there for me.

I totally get the idea of attachment and coming up through the farm. I probably follow the Mets minors more than anyone here so I root for those guys more. At some point though I only care about the Mets winning regardless of who is on the team. It's the #1 and most important thing.

I remember them too. I even vaguely remember the ‘69 Mets, but it was listening to Phil Rizzuto on WPIX Channel 11 that turned me into a Mets fan for life.

In fairness, a friend of mine was Rizzuto’s next door neighbor and he couldn’t say enough nice things about him as a person. I just couldn’t stand listening to him.

While at Rutgers in the 80’s I worked the Price Club on 27 in Edison. At the time it was the only one in the area so we got big crowds from all over.

Phil and Cora would shop there and like your neighbor said, Phil was wonderful while he shopped. Very gracious but people wouldn’t leave him alone. So much so he ended up staying in the car while she shopped.

That’s because you are a huckleberry.

I would think that paying him would be much more conducive to winning than letting him walk due to a minor bit more money (in the grand scheme of things) when you have the richest owner in the game, especially when Boras apparently came with a 3 yr 90 million dollar contract with opt outs.

I don't know I'm actually starting to blame Alonso. He keeps turning down the most money it seems. The market speaks and it's showing him what he's worth which doesn't seem to be as much as he thinks he deserves. Why should we pay $30 million more than any other team is willing to? Different price points but Burnes wanted to be in AZ and took less to do so.

As of now it's all innuendo though so when he makes his final decision and we see the terms we can discuss then.

That had to be kind of weird for guys like him as they aged. They played during a time when you could blend into the crowd more, so to speak. Many of the guys worked regular jobs in the offseason. As he did more TV work in retirement, his fame continued to grow and he couldn't run basic errands that he was used to running for years. It was those damn Money Store ads!

As requested!

Ideally, I would have liked Pete on a very short deal so we could move away from him quickly if he continues to decline. I just don’t understand this “home grown” stuff. This is a business and I don’t care if the players are from Mars, I just want the best we can get. I’ve worked for a very large pharmaceutical company for 35 years and loyalty has gone out the window decades ago (and I’m totally fine with that). Why is this any different.?
So- then tell me the best we can get at 1B for this year, if it isn't our homegrown guy...

And if Boras offered 3/90 with opt outs and Stearns came back with what is reported- it has all been a complete farce.
If Baty or Mauricio pull off a Vientos type of year- then Stearns did the right thing.
But, one of them HAVE to have a year like that. Otherwise- our lineup SUCKS even with both runner up MVP's in it.

They already offered him above market and he doesn’t want it. That’s obvious since no one is offering him more. He’s a slow, declining untahletic, 30 year old right-handed first basemen. People like him because he hits a lot of home runs (I’m not underestimating this) and because he’s a goofball. Perhaps they can’t replace him at this point since the Mets waited so long and most options are gone. However, they’ve made more than fair offers to him before and he’s turned them down. At what point do you say screw it. They would be idiots to offer him more than 3 years, but it’s not my money.

Anyway, Bregman has a higher WAR, a way better glove, but is also declining….if they wanted to move Vientos to first…or shoot for the stars and try to get Vlady.

Like I said, I’d like to get him for 1-3 years but I think the Mets have treated him fairly, so it might be time to move on.

I’m also not saying the lineup is good right now, even with Alonso. In fact, although they caught lightning in a bottle and reached the NLCS, I’d be surprised they could repeat that even with Alonso, especially with the current pitching situation. I think they a still a few pieces and a couple of years away anyway. Money is no object and I believe they will get there.

Guess if I read more about him I would’ve known he was already teammates with Ohtani and Yamamoto in Japan
One thing I admire about his tour - he was very organized and clear about the ground rules with everyone and stuck to a timeline for making a decision. No drama. Now that may be because he knew where he was going all along and just wanted to kick the tires to see if some team could change his mind. Also may have been a dress rehearsal for a free agency tour later.

MLB needs to rectify the ability of foreign players to choose where they’re signing.

U.S players endure a college draft.

Same should be the case for “ amateurs” from Japan and Latim America etc

Teams should draft and hold their rights

Very rarely is this kind of build completed in 1 season. If they're gonna move on from Pete, they might as well wait for the right first baseman instead of throwing money around for the sake of doing it. I still think they should have signed him at 3 years at whatever price point, but if Vlad is truly an option then they shouldn't.

Fair.

And I assume this would be based on the previous season’s record like it normally is for a draft such as this?

Yes.

One draft - same for all !

Just as they do in the NBA and NHL

Foreigners are selected in the same draft as North Americans !

Would be easier said than done. Do you stop signing Dominican 16 year olds? Do you start signing American 16 year olds? Or do you just live with the inconsistency?

I don't believe in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" adage. But I have to ask - is it broke? Are there flaws in the current system that create inequities? Is allowing 16 year olds the right to determine their own future (or at least try to), really such a terrible thing?

If the current system were resulting in the rich and powerful franchises cornering all the top talent, then I would agree with you. But it's not, thanks to the spending caps governing international signings. You can go all-in on one player, or you can spread the money around. But you have to stay within the cap. I actually like that.

If only there was a cap for the Dodgers, who apparently is the only team in pro sports who have cracked some code in not getting punished for signing everyone.

I think this is why most people are pissed. The Dodgers are following the rules but if the Mets or Yankees did exactly the same thing- owners would have found a way to put an extra tax on deferments or something similar and make it retroactive.
When Cohen broke the bank a couple of years ago, he did it under the old tax rules and then they added the Cohen tax. It may not have been retroactive but in a way it was, because it carried forward.
What do you think happens next year if the Mets find a way to convince Vlad to take $5 mil a year and $30 mil deferred.
A new tax rules of deferred money will all of a sudden become in very serious talks.

2 years $22 million for Minter.

Can opt out after this season.
I've got some concerns about Minter. In theory it can all be explained away by the hip injury, but in 2024 his velocity dropped, his hr % spiked to easily a career high, and his babip was 100+ points lower than the year prior.

Stearns and company are the pros I'm just a guy on his phone but this is definitely a bit of a roll of the dice for not insignificant money.

I hope Pete still resigns. If there is some grand plan for Vladdy that is obviously fine too. Although I'd rather keep our prospects and keep Pete.

Without someone to replace Alonso- the team bores the living F out of me.
We have Soto and Lindor. Cross fingers on Vientos.
The lineup is a .500 at best group, the SP is .500 at best and who knows with the BP.
And now the bench sucks because they have to be starters.
I hope there is a grand plan but at this moment, I have no excitement for opening day. I hope Stearns proves me wrong. And I will have no problem giving him credit if we are in the WS or at least a 92+ win team.

Cmon man. You know Stearna isn’t done. Plus Vientos isn’t even working out af first in Florida.

That may be difficult with how these Japanese rules are.
Tough. You want to play in the best league in the World, these are OUR rules. Stay in Japan or go to Korea if you want.

Yes. No. No.

* Not terrible but IMO a little off.

The Dodgers keep signing those Japanese pitchers. Since they are used to pitching once per week, they probably need a few more. They’ll need a 6 man rotation.

They have in no particular order more than 6.

Ohtani
Yamamoto
Sasaki
Snell
Glasnow
Kershaw (everyone says he'll sign back)
Young arms like Miller, Knack, Grove, Wrobleski etc
