As soon as Baez and Lindor are back at full strength he goes right to the bench. He can sub in at 2nd SS and 3rd.
He'll mope around like a 6-year old brat but **** him. And I had high hopes for him becoming Murphy 2.0. But he can't stop ground balls and he can't stop hitting them.

He is pretty much ahead of Murphy on every single stat at the same point of their career. Just saying...
Not really, by the time Murphy was 29 (same age as McNeil) he had more HRs (48 to 36), more RBIs (329 to 143), more doubles (190 to 75).

But forget the numbers, Murphy had moxie and his teammates loved him, I don't think we can say the same there.

I didn’t go by age, went by their first 1100 ABs- where McNeil is now.
I do remember Murphy well but until those playoffs, I wouldn’t ever call it “moxie”
As a matter of fact- until those playoffs, not many Met fans really cared one way or another about keeping him.
he then had his 2 great years in Wash and all of a sudden he has become the 200000 people that claim to have rushed the field against L’Ville…

Oh he had moxie, and when he left we missed it big time. And a lot of Mets fan wanted to keep him, no idea where you're getting that from, in fact I wanted to sign him and move him to first base and dump Duda, who I was never a fan of ever.

I actually liked him but remember it all very clear. The ground swell of fans loving him and wanting to sign him was because of the playoffs.
Prior to that, he was a nice player but bad fielder, no range, no speed with gap power.
mill be honest, a part of me feels he never would have had those same years if he stayed here.

Murphy was a popular player among fans before the 2015 playoffs, he became legend among them for his historic playoff performance and got his contract because of it, but he was stellar with the Nats before injuries spelled him, I don't think it's a fluke, he was a legit great MLB hitter.

I think if Cohen was owner we would have kept him, but the contract would have been an overpayment but that stuff doesn't bother me when it comes to really a capless sport.

A brief review of history:

After the 2015 season, NOBODY wanted Daniel Murphy.

The guy that both the Nats and the Mets wanted was Ben Zobrist. Neither got him as he signed with the Cubs. So both the Mets and Nats moved on to Plan B, both of which involved trades.

For the Mets, Plan B was Neil Walker, whom they acquired from Pittsburgh. For the Nats, it was Brandon Phillips, whom they thought they had acquired from Cincinnati. Except that Phillips vetoed the trade.

So the Nats moved on to Plan C, which was Murphy. We know the rest of the story.

Oh that's 100% bullshit no one wanted him, you got to be kidding me.

There is a reason why the Mets didn't go hard to resign Murphy that is not really talked about, but it's known in inner circles, since you guys so on top of it I'm sure you all can tell me what it is.

I don't feel like looking up the timeline of events, but the facts as I have outlined them are accurate. Murphy was Washington's Plan C.

I have no idea why the Mets didn't want him. All I know is that they didn't. Nor did anyone else - at least not as a top priority.

I do know that one reason why the Mets preferred Walker is that he was on an expiring contract. They were willing to go long on Zobrist because of his versatility. Not so with Murphy. My speculation (I don't know this) is that the Mets wanted to keep second base free for Dilson Herrera. We all make mistakes.

It isn’t such a secret. He had some homophobic views that quite honestly, isn’t much different then many pro athletes. He just happened to express them. But let’s also not forget, we did make him a $15+ mil offer, we had what we thought was his replacement in the minors and felt he was a high average, little power, bad fielder. No one else was really jumping after him either.
I actually think McNeil is a perfect comparison. We could easily lose him before he hits his great years.

But… but… McCAnn!!!!
Nido has thrown out close to 50% of the runners he has faced this year. Something he was never close to doing in years past. If either of them can get hot at the plate it would certainly help.

McCann pretty much is who we thought he was - or at least who we SHOULD have thought he was. His current slash line is .240/.303/.363. His career slash is .248/.300/.390. He has provided the expected good defense, today notwithstanding.

I think we may have had unrealistic expectations due to a small 2020 sample.

Bully for you for knowing why, but they offered him the one year deal knowing he wasn't going to take it and there were other teams after him, I can get why you didn't like him (his Neanderthal views towards gays), but stop selling short what his worth was at the time .

I think McNeil's surly personality is going to get him chased away from the Mets, for instance I tend to think he was agitator with the fight with Lindor, and while they say it was water under the bridge, it never really is. He does seem to have a lot of Jeff Kent in him so I do agree I could see McNeil moving on and thriving elsewhere just like Kent did.

You have to keep track here…it’s only been a couple of posts, not 6 years.
I did like him. But, I very clearly remember fan’s views on him pre post season and after the post season.
no one is saying a Met’s fan would have been upset if he stayed a Met. But it was his post season that got most fans on the band wagon to sign him.

Letting Murphy go to the Nats after that Ruthian performance was pure buffoonery. I felt that way then, and even more now.

I don’t disagree but it doesn’t change that before that post season- not many would have been so heart broken.

There may have been other teams after Murphy after 2015, but I cannot name any. Perhaps you can.

I did look up the timeline of events;

December 8, 2015: Ben Zobrist signs with Cubs. At the time Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported that the Mets and Nats were both interested.

December 9, 2015: Mets acquire Neil Walker.

December 17 2015: Rosenthal reports that a trade between the Nats and Reds for Brandon Phillips fell through due to Phillips veto.

December 23, 2015: Nats sign Murphy. No mention (that I could find) as to who else was interested, if anyone.

What a great 12 hours of baseball today! It started out listening to the Mets game from Avon by the Sea, going in and out of what had to be the most crystal clear water I can remember on the Jersey Shore. Got home to catch the last few innings of the Mets DH sweep. The Corn field game was a great watch, a fantastic game, and a happy ending to a great baseball day.

It seems Nido is playing better defense than McCann with similar offensive production.

Any other time the Mets a have this shift on to the power side for each hitter. This one time they decide not to employ it. Why not this time?
We now understand why May and Familia are no closers. Pressure bust pipes.

Alright, I'm back to normal.
I don't know about May but the way I see it Familia didn't exactly blow up there. While you may be able as a pitcher to control how hard the ball is hit you can't control where a ball no matter how soft the contact, is hit. And that single that tied the game was around a 25 hopper that McNeil has to at minimum keep in the infield.

Okay here we go with what could be make or break it time in terms of scheduling. But it's not just who we're playing it's also who our competitors will be playing at the same time. Especially the Braves. Here's what it looks like for this pivotal stretch for the remainder of the month.

Braves- @Nats, @Marlins,@Orioles then home vs Yanks, home vs Giants. They start off September going west to L.A but follow that up with @Colorado.

Phils- home vs Reds, @Arizona, @SD then home vs Rays, home vs Arizona, @Nats. They start off September with road series vs Miami and Milwaukee but overall their September schedule is Charmin soft with home series vs the Rockies, Cubs, Orioles and Pirates.

Mets-We know who we have coming in the short term but beyond that we play a ton of games vs the Nats and Marlins bridging August on into September. We also play a home series vs the Yankees and travel to Boston and Milwaukee.

We just need to hold our own in these next lucky 13. Avoid going 4-9. or even 5-8 hopefully. It all starts tonight.

Agree 100%. We need to stay within 3 games of first coming out of the Dodger-Giants part of the schedule. Phils have the softest schedule moving forward but we will see if Kennedy is enough to stabilize their pen. I don't know what to make of the Braves. Thought they would fade after the Acuna injury but here they are. It may come down to who can beat up on the Fish. Sadly for us their young pitching seems to shine against us.

Just for shits and giggles, 😛 Yankees fans always love to talk about team history, so you might as well add this. Congrats.

Here is some more "good news" to follow DeGrom. Baez to the injured list. Happy Friday the 13th.

Sorry… but I think the Mets at best will go 4-9 over the next 13. If by some miracle they go 6-7 or better, maybe there will some hope for Sept. It doesn’t look good and deGrom looks like he is done for this season.
