On your first sentence we agree--that is on Buck and McCann. Who knows how the pitchers feel about Nido vs. McCann in calling the games, framing pitches (pitchers not fans), which probably figures a lot into the decision. He was clearly not ready to play and he should not have played. He also cannot hit and has never hit here in NYC. Nido would have stopped two of the three balls that got past McCann. He should be DFA'd and let's take our chances with Alvarez and Nido.
On your second sentence, I looked up the batting stats for the 2021 Mets. Kind of difficult to judge McCann in 2022 on 85 at bats and being on and off the IL, don't you think?
McCann's OPS was .643 in 2021 for 375 at bats. Not world beating, but in line with Dom and McNeil. Same for OBP. And that is for a catcher, where the bar is lowered. Looking at 2022 stats for batters that are listed with 3.1 PA per games played, the #6 catcher in MLB has an OPS of .655. McCann's 2021, when healthy and playing regularly, seems to be in line. 🤷♂️
Maybe the Mets should have held onto Wilson Ramos, who in the full season before 2020 (covid year), batted .288 with 473 at bats, and had an OPS of .768. Why did the Mets unload him? Was it because they acquired McCann?
Pre-Ramos, Mets had Kevin Plawecki, who batted .210 and an OPS of .685. Maybe Ramos is available somewhere. He is a free agent.
Nobody has any idea if Nido would have stopped 2 of those 3 balls. That's just piling on. DFA'd is way premature, but typical of Mets fans. Let the season play out and let Alavarez develop.
