At the time the Baez trade was made, Mets were in first place by four games. He was a very productive Met as his .886 OPS will attest. This could have been remembered as the move that put the Mets over the top to a world championship. Only problem was that the rest of the team didn't cooperate.

No second guessing here.
No second guessing from me. I was correct at the time of the deal that it was a big mistake. Everyone could see the direction the team was headed last year and it was down.

nAAAts strike again
Bloop allowed to drop in , next pitch ,
1 out deep fly ball that CF has easily in stride and he drops it . Directly leads to 2 runs
4-2

There are 6-8 horrible teams.
With 3-4 who don’t care that everyone knows that they are not trying to win for at least 4 more years

Got this from the Phillies thread.
Don’t look at the standings, just keep winning. I believe NYM will come back to the pack, and when they do we need to be there.
I'm somewhat confused. The Mets have done work without the top half of their pitching staff. What happens if the Mets go on a streak similar to Atlanta (14 wins in a row) or Philly (winners of 15 of their last 17 games)? Both Philly and Atlanta had to go on crazy streaks to get back into striking distance. Those winning streaks still have the Braves 6.5 back and Philly 8 back.

I don't think it's an odd argument. I pointed out the difference between baseball and other sports. In other sports, the threat of being released gets people to pick up their play. In baseball, we see poor middle relief every year, yet seldom is anything done. Moving between the minors and the big leagues is not enough to elicit a response. If you cut one or two players, I bet it would send a message to the others. No way should a player like Shreve still be on the roster, and that's my point.
They cut Cano and sent Smith down. If there's a message to be sent, they sent it.

CBD ...noticed that too
Mets aka come back to earth ???
14 game streak and 14-2 ????
What happens not if , WHEN Mets win 8 straight and either team goes 4-4.

Well while Plummer had his big moment against the Phils i think the bloom is now off that rose and its about time to get Dom back up here and put him into that platoon with J.D at designated hitter. I guess the issue is that Plummer is serving as the 4th OF.

As of tomorrow Mets will have to drop a pitcher and add a position player. So we'll see.

Lugo forced himself to throw a strike by missing horribly on 3 pitches
Last several appearances Lugo is missing pitches by 2-3 feet and throwing ball 3 feet high .

Lugo has been an enigma this year. Ironic Lugo becomes an enigma when Diaz becomes lights out. It would be lethal 1-2 if Lugo was clicking.
At the deadline - we need 2 things: more bullpen help and another power bat to compliment Alonso. I’m also presuming Max / Jake and Megill come back.

Well they ain't sending him down, because they can't. Unless he consents to the demotion, which he won't.

They can relegate him to a less prominent role, but who replaces him?
There's always one Schoeneweis or Ollie Perez in the bullpen.

have a secret for you...over the past month- Lugo has been one of our best pitchers. And even including yesterday- he has a 2.70 era 0.98 whip over the past 30

just saying
Lugo has been up and down not just this season but last year as well. Let's throw the stats out and look at the situations when he comes in. Lugo could throw 20 pitches, and most are under stress, making for tense moments. Lugo's lack of consistency puts pressure on other players to make the difference.

forgot to add- D Smith has also been good over the last 30 with a 2.92 era and a .097 whip
both have pitched in 11 games over that period.

Need help understanding why we are talking about releasing or cutting Lugo.

This just doesnt match the narrative

And yes, last year was not good and start of this year was rough but...

Seth came in with the bases loaded and then compounded the problem by letting the count get to 3-2. The rookie just beat him. It happens. I think the inning may have been different if Lugo starts it. But that is water under the bridge. Let's just win today and make it a 5-2 homestand.

Lugo is not the same pitcher he was a few years ago. He's still a good RP but more of a 6th/7th inning guy at this point.

Daniel Palka coming up. A true HR or nothing guy. We'll have to make a 40 man move and drop a pitcher. Will be Lopez or Medina I'm guessing. I think Medina would be subject to waivers.

Don't have to make 40 man move as we are currently at 39, having previously DFA'd Gesoke Katoh. Katoh looks like he is destined to be a "Phantom Met" - one who spent time on the active Met roster but never got in a game.

The writers were saying we'd need one. I knew we dumped Katoh but thought we replaced him.

One good month does explain the other half of the season. In the past, Lugo's performance would not bother me. Now, it seems to happen more often than not. Lugo has been as inconsistent as any typical middle reliever pitcher.

Will be interesting to see what they do when Tylor Megill comes back. Was listening to the 880 AM radio broadcast on Friday, and they were speculating that perhaps Megill could be used for middle relief once (if) Max and Jacob were back. Don't know if that means Lugo becomes an odd man out.

According to Andy Martino, Palka has joined the Mets but not yet activated. He says they have to get down to 13 pitchers AFTER today's game, not before.
