Hold them here and we are scoring bottom of the ninth
Good plan bad execution. Put Diaz against the dangerous guys in the lineup, get thru that inning and then bring someone else in to face the weak hitting bottom 3rd of the Astros lineup. Give up a 2 run bomb to a guy batting .115 with 2 outs and the top of your order coming to bat. Priceless.

I know the trade deadline is just over a month away; but is there anything that says you have to wait until the mad, last-second rush as opposed to getting ahead of everybody and making upgrades now?

If you are asking a seller to sell before the market heats up, you will have to overpay for the privilege.

Saving Diaz for the 10th inning was the right move. It didn't work out. Met's bullpen is middle of the pack in MLB. That isn't going to win championships. I like the Josh Bell idea as a DH but need a reliable arm in the pen since Lugo/Smith/Ottavino etc. don't have the desired ratio of good outings/bad outings.

Welcome. Haven't noticed you posting in this thread previously. I love the Josh Bell idea. An OPS over 900, only 29 years old AND he's a switch hitter whose lefty and righty splits are pretty close. I don't know much about the relief pitcher market with the exception of the guys mentioned in the Anthony DiComo article I linked earlier. And I can't even personally speak to them as I don't really watch American league teams and have never seen them pitch. So I'd be going strictly off of stats.

Diaz already pitched in the 8th. They weren't saving him for anything. Agreed 100% we need pen help.

Welcome to the thread.

Okay. I get your point there but when is the start of open shopping season mid-July?
That I cannot say. But right now, any seller's asking price is high.

There is a reason that trades (and contractual agreements in general) tend to get done right at the deadline. Because that's when people get serious. Both sides agree to compromise. Or one side or the other gives in.

The question is whether having the player for the extra month is worth the overpay.

EDIT: One exception to this rule is if the seller's primary motivation is dumping salary. Don't think that's the case here though.

I do like the idea of saving your closer for the 10th in a tie game though. Particularly at home. If you can pin that free runner on second in the top of the inning, you have a great chance to win the game.

Gotta get there first though!

Sarcasm? (Tried to put up Sheldon Cooper meme, didn't work.)
Half sarcasm about Buck. WTF with Diaz that he could not go out and start the 9th?

Someone else noted he pitched the 8th, and IMO no reason he could not have started the 9th with tomorrow being an off day.

Just practicing for when Alvarez gets called up before the month of August is over. I've seen where his defense is behind his hitting, but as long as they don't say he's a lazy dog behind the plate and is willing to work hard, bring him up. Can't have a lazy dog behind the plate, and we've all seen how irate fans will get over being lazy at that position. Just can't have it behind the dish, anywhere on the diamond really.😉

They need to get him to AAA already. Give him a month or so to see if he holds up there and if so seriously getting him up to the show.
Just bring him up- AAA doesn’t really matter at this point. Give him the month before the trade deadline to see if he needs the rest of this year or is ready.

It makes no sense to bring Alvarez up as a bench player. He has to play every day. I doubt he will be ready defensively this year, and I am not sure he's ready offensively. Promote him to AAA and let him stay there until September when the roster limit goes to 28. Then we'll see.

Yeah it could be a rough adjustment for a 20 year old rookie catcher to have to adapt to a whole new pitching staff in the middle of a pennant race.

I think it would be a huge mistake to bring up Alvarez this early. I think his bat is pretty much close to being ready but he still has a few things to work on. Mets aren't going to sacrifice D behind the plate and we can't just call up Alvarez to DH when he has to work on his D. Defensively he's getting better but not ready for major leagues yet. I would just give him the job to start in 2023.

Vientos is the obvious play here if we want to dip into the farm. He's made for DH and can still get some time for 1B/3B. He hit another HR as well last night. Farm report coming.

Ender Inciarte is now the 1,166th player to appear in an official game as a New York Met. But he is only the fifth whose name begins with the letter "I". How many can you name?

Hints:
Two are Japanese.
One, sadly, passed away earlier this year.
The other was a "Generational" player.

Jeff Innis came to me right away. That's all I got.

1 easy, 1 medium, 2 almost impossible for the Japanese players.

Isringhausen was the easy one for me especially with the clue Worm gave.

The two Japanese players were pitchers who played for the Mets not too long ago. They are Ishii (2005) and Igarashi (2010-2011). Isringhausen was the "generational" player... NOT. Innis is the player who recently passed away.

Right you are!

Ryota Igarashi was an obscure reliever whom I remember primarily for his nickname "Rocket Boy". At least that was his nickname in Japan, but it never caught on here. Too bad, because it is the coolest nickname ever. Rocket Boy.

Kaz Ishii was actually pretty good as a starter for the Dodgers. He finished fourth in the 2002 ROY balloting. But he didn't do much with the Mets, and it was soon sayonara and back to Japan. He is now the GM/Manager of a team in the Japanese Major League.

Isringhausen may not have lived up to the Generation K hype, but he was very good after leaving the Mets. Led the majors in saves one year. Two time all-star, once in each league.
