Heard on News12 yesterday there were 3 armed robberies within 2 hours Saturday night, 2 involving students and all close to campus. Have to think it was the same person(s). I'm going to attribute a lot of it to the nice weather and more opportunities (potential victims) out and about..

It's been bad. We've gotten multiple emails the past few days about heightened security around New Brunswick to try to battle these crimes. We just got this from the Chancellor.

Dear Members of the Rutgers University-New Brunswick Community:

Over the weekend, the Rutgers University Police Department responded to multiple incidents on and around our campus. As Executive Director of Public Safety and Chief of Rutgers University Police Kenneth Cop has announced, as investigation of these crimes continues, we are further responding by increasing Rutgers Police patrols both on campus and in the fifth and sixth wards of New Brunswick. Highly visible patrols are proven deterrents, and you will see a noticeable increase in Rutgers Police details adjacent to the College Avenue and Cook/Douglass campuses.

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff is my highest priority, and I will continue working directly with our law enforcement partners, including Rutgers Police and New Brunswick Police, to ensure our community continues to be secure.

During this exam period, as students may be away from their residences studying late into the night, it is especially important to remind you that Rutgers Police provides safety escorts upon request. The escorts provide our community with personalized service to their vehicles, campus residence, or the University's mass transit system. In order to request a security escort, individuals should contact the police communications center at 732-932-7211.

Sincerely,

Richard L. Edwards, Ph.D.

Chancellor, Rutgers University-New Brunswick

My son is a freshman at Rowan, the police have been called to the dorms several times as some jerk or jerks are drawing Swastikas on dorm doors and around campus. They are calling it a 'hate crime'.
Crap happens everywhere.

What planet are you guys from that there were no criminal acts at Rutgers? There were several when I was there, including shootings, stabbings, rapes, and theft.

armed robberies adjacent to campus happen everywhere now ? I didn't know that college campuses had devolved to that point. I live near Princeton and I hardly ever hear of armed robbery on that campus, but maybe university officials keep it covered up. Can you provide some examples or data that armed robberies on campus happen everywhere ?

How do you define"everywhere" ? The list you provided is probably less that 1 percent of 1 percent of all American universities. ... or are you suggesting that this is just a representative sample, and that there are similar crimes at all universities ? I guess if armed robberies on campus occur everywhere, it is OK - just part of the college experience, and a good way for students to learn some of life's lessons

Here you go big boy. Comparing princeton to RU is dumb. http://www.syracuse.com/news/index....glaries_university_area_new_york_17_tips.html

You can search campus police blotters across the nation yourself, your just a troll.

millenials....this stuff didn't really happen 10-30 years ago, you had incidents here and there but its out of control now, reflection of the more violent society we live in..i don't care what statistics someone wants to give me, its easily more violent now on campus

Wrong. We had this in the 90s.

I think if you did a google search for 'armed robbery fill in blank name of college' something is going to come up for 90% of them , including all the IVYs.

It's true there have been sporadic incidents going back til the 70s (and no doubt before) but what's disturbing to me about these incidents is how close to campus a couple of these are.

I mean - Morrell St, Mine St- these are streets very, very close to College Ave in areas dominated by students.

It's not like we're taking Remsen And Seaman for those familiar with other parts of NB.

Here's a much more comprehensive story:

That's impossible. There are laws to prevent carrying a gun in NJ.

Not sure what to say. If anything is suggested people come out of the wood work and begin to scream bloody murder. I believe we had 190 million people in the USA in 1970 today you have 325 million. That's almost double the number of people in 45 years and honestly who are they and where are they from? Do they live in the Italian section of Brooklyn? Or are they Irish living Hells Kitchen? Or are they Germans living in Chicago? See my point, these people committing crimes are from where and who are they? Very difficult to pin point who these are and when you do it's politically incorrect to profile. I believe that political correctness will have an entire chapter dedicated in history books when discussing the eventual demise of the USA.

Crimes have been rising because when Julie got fired no one remembered to tell all of Middlesex County PD they could stop patrolling the blue lot.

Many schools combat issues like this with a ton of gates and fencing , especially certain elite schools located in bad neighborhoods.

At that point, living off campus is at your own risk.

Sucks that anyone has to deal with this crap.

I seem to recall the area around Commercial and George being an area to avoid late at night when I attended RU in the early 90s. Other than that I really don't remember much in the way of crime, not that it didn't happen. It does seem like its a little more pronounced nowadays.

And yet... crime rates are way down. Yes, there are pockets that are worse, yes we have some different and horrific types of new crime, but your chances of being killed are much, much less than they have been for generations. So... maybe all those new people are diluting the high crime rates from the people who were already here ;)

Yeah that area was sketchy to drive from C Town to Commercial. Shady characters all hanging outside

I'm glad I'll be dead in 20 years when this planet becomes totally savage.
LOL. 99.999% of the earth is safer, happier, richer, better off than ever before in human history.

just today there was a report released that for the FIRST TIME EVER, less than 10% of people alive are living under extreme poverty. things are getting better and better for people every year -- it's just that the (ever-decreasing) bad stuff gets all the attention.

New Brunswick has come a long, long way over the years.

New Brunswick and RU PD do a decent job of patrolling the neighborhoods, or at least having a presence but the majority of these crimes are happening at 1am, 2 am, 4am. The discpicable thing was maybe half of the crime alerts that occurred last semester involved members of the football team.

FWIW, I've been told that crime isn't actually "up" rather how it's being reported has been changed in recent years. In the past, NBPD was reporting all crimes on campus under the city's UCR which is submitted to the FBI yearly to determine crime index. After some political back and forth, RUPD is now responsible for reporting any and all crimes involving The RU community under their UCR. Basically NB told the university they weren't eating their crimes under their stats any longer. Supposedly what was happening was NB stats were skewed higher and the campus police lower. It's all a political numbers game. That's why u see in the paper person were/weren't affiliated with the university. Crime is probably level just being reported differently. Still if you are a student or resident of NB vigilance is your best defense from becoming a victim. I hope everyone stays safe and uses a little common sense. If you see something report it.
