OT: WTH is Going on around Campus Lately

my nephew is a freshmen at RU and his bike was stolen in front of the Student Center despite being locked. He said that there are have been a ton of bikes stolen all over campus. He also says within the first month two different students were arrested in his dorm by cops

Yeah that area was sketchy to drive from C Town to Commercial. Shady characters all hanging outside

I walk from College Ave to Cook along George quite a bit; sometimes by myself, sometimes not, sometimes as late as 2AM. I have never had a problem.

yes not anymore, they cleaned it up...believe me driving that area was scary...walking...lol you either wouldn't make it without your wallet being stolen or your life..but my point is back then it seemed like you knew the sketchy areas and the crime within the RU confines was almost nil...now its encroach further onto the student population and I assume some as to be student on student crime

If he was an unfunny genious or a hilarious idiot, would that be okay?
Will I am a bit of both; some people forget to put on their sarcastic meter in the morning
Lighten up local shill, life is not so dire and you should not exists like this, as you seem to live vicariously thru 18-22 year old playing a GAME in the fall, and hanging on ever post, Weird?

Yeah, back in the 90's that area of George Street was ripe for gentrification. With the amount of money that both J&J and Rutgers had, you knew it was only a matter of time before it was renovated. I remember going only as far as the theaters (Crossroads, George Street Playhouse, and State), then turning around. Occasionally, you would see students on bikes crossing that section pedaling as fast as possible. Interesting times for sure.

I don't think so, cant go more than a week without hearing about something now..most crimes back in the day where not close to where students were living off campus
You just didn't hear as much about it like you do now but it was happening on or close to campus on the "good" streets.... Home invasions, fights, robberies, muggings, almost abductions/rapes & more happened on George, Hamilton, Union, Mine, Easton, Stone, Guilden, Sicard, etc. And yes everyone knew it was bad once you got near French or C-Town & to avoid that.

My place on Morrell was robbed in 1990. Bottom line is that you have a college campus surrounded by an urban area, which is not horrible, but certainly has its issues. If you look at the times of these incidents these are crimes of opportunity. But times aren't the sole factor. When my house was robbed it was in the middle of the day, but everyone was out at class or work - another window of opportunity.

The common element is the NBPD. Funny, why didn't they talk to NJ.com?

Oh, right, a 20 year old was drinking a beer or someone was playing loud music. Who cares about rapes and robberies when college students are listening to music and drinking beer?

Same issue at the stadium when they are ticketing teenagers drinking with their parents.

NJ policing outside of the bigger cities is just based on revenue generation, not safety, and no one is willing to take on the police unions.

To be specific, the problem in tailgating lots has been the Middlesex County sheriffs. Agree with the rest.

How come there is no outrage in the press when students commit crimes who are not on the football team?

Where is the SL and all the academic fanboys who comment on their articles? Shouldn't there be as much outrage?

Do you actually read the SL?

I am wondering how much of the perceived rise in local crime rate is simply due to the Internet making it easier for stories to spread. My friend was raped (by a stranger) in her off campus Rutgers house in 1995. I never heard about it until years later. If that happened now, we would all know about it.

Exactly. I can think of a couple of incidents that happened to people I know that were not in the papers (other than a police blotter), but would definitely make news now.

Hell my friend got carjacked and no one knew about it.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I hope she has recovered and was able to move forward.

Many schools combat issues like this with a ton of gates and fencing , especially certain elite schools located in bad neighborhoods.

At that point, living off campus is at your own risk.

Sucks that anyone has to deal with this crap.

Anyone know what Temple or St John's do?
Both are in decrepit areas.
Do they basically gate the campus in?

millenials....this stuff didn't really happen 10-30 years ago, you had incidents here and there but its out of control now, reflection of the more violent society we live in..i don't care what statistics someone wants to give me, its easily more violent now on campus

Actually, violent crime as a whole has declined broadly since the 1990s. We're now back at the rates we had in the 1960s. (Statistics are pretty useful in figuring those kinds of things out.) And this is despite better reporting on some violent crimes, like rape and domestic violence, that used to be vastly underreported. Unfortunately, people tend to hear about violent crime because it's an easy headline, and so there's a continuing broad impression that it's going up.

simple way to combat this is to always walk in groups and don't stray far from student housing. I only had one issue in my four years with "townies". I lived on Easton next to RU Grill and on a short walk home from someones house at 3am two guys (probably 20 years old) politely asked me if I would like to fight them. It was the weirdest encounter I ever had. When I said I did not they started following me until I got to my house where a couple of my housemates were hanging out on the front porch. They insisted on fighting at that point as they tried to basically come into our house so we really had no choice but to.

To this day I still think back on that and try to figure out if they had something mentally off or if they just simply wanted to have a go. weird weird weird

how do those rates break down if you take out the major cities which have course cleaned up their acts, has more violence spread into more suburban areas. As a student at Rutgers in the eary 90s I never thought twice about safety on campus or any of the off campus housing. As mentioned before the area to avoid was further down George to Commerical.

Think it is a HUGE part of it. When I was at RU in the early to mid 2000's the only time you heard about these things were from word of mouth or from the police blotter/articles in The Daily Targum. Everything Leonard23 said in this thread happened during my time at RU.

Today, students get e-mails/text of alerts straight to their phone. I also think students tell their parents more about these things (millennial upbringing) to go along with the easier access of media coverage their parents and the public can find.

Uh, actually I don't take message boards seriously at all. Which has gotten me into "trouble" here since others do. And how would you have the slightest inkling what I "seem" to do. Weak showing by you, boss..

In the early 90s I received a full ride to Temple with acceptance into their Honors program and an internship with one of their top professors. I was all set to accept it until I visited the campus. To call it a hellhole would be an insult to the devil. It literally was a couple buildings converted to classrooms & a projects converted to dorms smack dab in the ghetto. My personal guide admitted to my parents that he'd been mugged twice. They refused to let me accept the offer & were happy to pay for Rutgers.

I understand it's been cleaned up since.

A PC White House has handcuffed law enforcement around the country.
It's much easier to be a criminal these days.
That is utter bullsh!t. I swear I can't comprehend how educated people can be so ignorant. Statistics show that crime is significantly down compared to its peak in the late 70s through early 90s. Yet somehow reprimanding unconstitutional behavior by law enforcement is the bane of our existence.

You are entitled to your own opinion, even if it's wrong.

A PC country will be it's own downfall.

You're right. This guy consistently shows how dumb he is. Before this there was the comment he made in the thread about the missing Rutgers student.

Temple looks like you dropped a college campus in the middle of Paterson...after it was bombed by the miltary. Which shows how good that staff is that they can get some highly recruited kids to constantly vist.

Temple has 35,000 students. It is a REAL campus, not just a couple of buildings, and it is NOT gated. The area is poor and working class, but not unsafe (no idea how it was before). Campus is currently a construction nightmare because of a new library going up in the center of campus, but overall it is nice - a mix of old historic building and newer more modern ones.

I want to HS in NB a loong time ago -- 55years. You wouldn't believe what a nice city it was. Had to walk to near Douglass for frosh BB practice and up to. St. Pete's hospital for baseball. clean safe city. Now I only drive thru it for day games.

I think you would be very surprised how nice our campus is now, and it's only getting better. $200M library and quad being built now.
