OT: Yanks grab Aroldis Chapmin from Reds

I guess the last big signings were McCann (5 years, $85 million) and Ellsbury (7 years, $153 million) in 2013. But the Castro and Chapman deals have added meaningful salary. Chapman got $8 million last year and is likely to go up in arbitration; Castro is getting $7 million next year, then $9 million, $10 million, and $11 million, with a team option for $16 million in 2020. (For luxury tax purposes, his salary is about $850,000 higher each year through 2019 as they amortize his signing bonus.)
Yes but no $20 per years guys. They aren't buying the market anymore. Mc Cann looks like a barging then and now!

Funny thing is when George Steinbrenner was spending BIG he wasn't close to the richest owner in baseball. He just wanted it more and was willing to do it and now we have an empire. Good for him and screw the cheap ass other owners.

Empire? Two WS championships this century is an empire? :okay:

I forgot Tanaka, $155 million/7 years, in the 13-14 offseason.

McCann looked pretty good last year, but in 2014 he looked pretty bad. Not to mention that he's a catcher, so the risk of drop off is pretty high.

Ummm name a better catcher at that price

Correct I believe this is due to the fact that a # of very large contracts are in their final year/years and will not be renewed.

Yanks paid $26 M in luxury tax based off contracts equaling about $240 M (that includes non-salary benefits for players) in 2015. Yanks will drop about $40M+ because of the 2016 salaries that will permanently expire.

2016:
$25M CC Sabathia
$23.1M Mark Texeira
$20M Alex Rodriguez
$15M Carlos Beltran
$3M against cap for Martin Prado deal of 2014

2017:
$25M CC Sabathia
$20M Alex Rodriguez

Brian McCann, $17 m in 2014, .692 $17 m in 2015 OPS .756
Russell Martin, $8.5 m in 2014, OPS .823; $7.5 m in 2015, OPS .787
Francisco Cervelli, $700,000 in 2014, OPS .802, $987,500 in 2015, OPS .771
Martin's salary goes up to $15 m next year, and McCann stays at $17 m. Cervelli will be getting a big raise, but I doubt he'll get close to $17 m.

Yeah you're right, no even close, only going 2-2 in 4 WS between 2000 and 2009. BTW, between 1900 and 1922 The Yanks won ZERO WS. Over the next 78 season they won 25. So....we're already up 2 on the last century (if my math is right...). [thumb2][thumb2][thumb2]

Why do people refer to championships from 100 years ago or even ones they weren't alive for? Yankee fans are the worst when it comes to talking rings when 95% of them were only alive for 1977-2009. Obviously the older timers who were alive for the 1950-1960's. I think it so stupid to brag about championships when you were in your dads ball sack or still crappin diapers. This goes for all sports.

Francisco Cervelli ? You're kidding, right ?
Cervelli was a back-up with the Yankees for a few years....and that's all he was ever gonna be with the Yanks...a back-up. I actually can't believe he got a starting gig somewhere in the Majors. He got some big hits for them from time to time, but that's about it. Defensively I believe the one year he got significant playing time behind the plate for the Yanks he was the easiest catcher to steal a base on. And he has no power. He was never gonna be a starter in the Bronx....nowhere near the level of McCann or Martin. More like a D'Arnaud.

In fact, I picked two different catchers who used to play for the Yankees.

It's true that Cervelli was the backup for the Yankees, but once he got a chance to play full time, he performed pretty well. On the offensive side, over the last two years Cervelli has been better, and even in 2015 it was at worst a wash. On the defensive side, McCann is better, but not by as much as you're suggesting - Cervelli's defensive WAR was 0.5 last year, compared to 0.8 for McCann, for instance. The big disparity is in stolen bases, but it's not a $16 million a year difference.
