Politi Nails It - RU Kills Big-Time Football Dream with Greg Schiano Fiasco

FYI - reports coming in that Politi's article is spot on and accurate. Hobbs and the BOG royally f'ed this up.

I am not sure exactly how Hobbs screwed this up, other than not being able to convince enough BOG members to support a YES vote for Schiano. Did Hobbs screw this up in other ways also? Thanks.

Hobbs is a fool. Sounds like the parties were negotiating, and then Hobbs backed out went he didn't like a counteroffer. Jesus, that's not how negotiations.

Steve - Where did you get this from? I have not seen something that said Hobbs backed out. Thanks!

Going into this, I was fine with us not hiring Schiano, at least not before reaching out to some of the better candidates out there.
  • If Schiano's demands were that exorbitant, this thing didn't have to drag on for a month, as that has made Rutgers look worse. I can't help but make the assumption that Rutgers probably knew from the beginning that they were never going to accede to many of Schiano's demands, but thought taking the time was a positive because they can sell it as "they really tried".
  • The list of plan B coaches floated out by the school through their media mouthpieces is very weak, and evidently we are not going to approach the best options (Norvell, Fickel, Clawson, Harsin, etc.) to make sure they are a NO before settling on a retread or someone without experience.

A few quick thoughts:

1. Note how Hobbs waited for a month and until after the final home game before blowing this up. Very calculated.

2. People focusing on the guaranteed money are missing the point. We were giving Greg 3 years no matter what. That would’ve been $12M right there. So, effectively, the bigger number represents a 5 year $20M contract that started in 2021 when the roster would be in much better shape — a contract that everyone would’ve been ok with.

3. Let’s be honest — RU has guaranteed every contract over the past decade or so because they never negotiate a buy out. And for those claiming Schiano should’ve taken an incentive deal, he did — he was willing to give up $7M if it didn’t work out.

Will never understand why the first meeting with Schiano did not happen until November 5th given when Ash was fired. Not helpful that this dragged on for as long as it did with no Plan B. This has been Hobbs mess for more than a year. So far clean up efforts are not going well. If he lost his private financiers in the GS process then his job just got a lot more difficult.

For #1 - Is it possible that Brown/Hobbs just couldn’t get enough BOG votes for Schiano? That is what I think happened. Brown/Hobbs negotiated items from Schiano to make this work, but in the end, Brown/Hobbs couldn’t get enough Board votes for the final proposal that Schiano would agree to. I am not sure that Hobbs “blew this up in a calculated” way.

I am trying to piece this together.

This fan base is even split on whether or not this article from NJ.com is bs

It seems like the reporting has been spot on. Greg was good with a 6 year deal if the infrastructure was in place. It was Hobbs’s job to make the latter happen. He obviously couldn’t do it on the timeline discussed with Greg, so Greg wanted an extra 2 years. Hobbs balked and never even went back to the BOG.

This is a good observation. A week earlier and there are fans with bags on their head in the stadium, as well as, "We want Schiano" and "F you, Hobbs" signs.

This is a pretty good summary.

Thanks. I am trying to piece together what happened and how much of this failure is on Hobbs vs the BOG. As far as Hobbs balking and never going back to the BOG with the counter of the extra 2 years, how and where did your source that info?

Rutgers had originally offered the same salary to the former coach for a six-year, $24 million deal, according to a source familiar with the offer. The source said Schiano’s agent countered on Tuesday, asking for eight years. and additional perks. The source said that the counter offer was never presented to the university’s board of governors, and was ultimately rejected by Rutgers Athletic Director Patrick Hobbs.
