RU Commits & HS Season Discussion Thread

Region Seeds:
Poz #1 @ 182 in Region 4
Oliveri #1 @ 132 in Region 3
Weaver #1 @ 152 in Region 3
Clark #1 @ 145 in Region 7
O'Neill #1 @ 170 in Region 2
Epperly #2 @ 195 in Region 7 (Martin Cosgrove is #1)

Epperly has a very interesting/tough region as 3 of the states top 5 wrestlers at 195 (Cosgrove, Epperly, and Szuba) are all here. Epperly gave Szuba his only loss of the season (10-3) in the SCT finals, but as the #2 and #3 seeds respectively they will surely meet in the semi-finals once again. If Epperly advances he will more than likely have a rematch with Cosgrove, who beat him 3-2 at the Sam Cali tournament. This will be a big chance for him to make some noise.

Damian Weaver is #2 seed @ 138 in Region 3 and could potentially see Anthony Clark in the finals.

Damian Weaver is a freshman?
He wrestled good competition all year.
I am excited to see how Dylan Weaver grows into his body.

Yeah, Damian is a freshman and has a had a great season thus far at 138 which is dominated by juniors and seniors. Has 4 loses on the year with 3 of them being at out of state tournaments (Mount Mat Madness and Escape the Rock) including 1 nationally ranked opponent.

He would be an obvious target for us in a few years with his brother being a commit and his connection with Donny, so I'm very interested to see his performance this year in a tough field and future development.

Since the districts were re-aligned to better balance the competition, the district tournament has become heavily watered down. It’s still cool to win or place, but it’s very rare to get 2 state place caliber wrestlers in the same district bracket.

There’s seemingly 5-6 teams in each district that are well below average and most of team titles are decided long before the day even starts.
Def watered down and now 4 per region go to AC

Epperly was horrible at regions last year so hopefully he gets redemption. Took 4th in regions last year, I believe as a top seed. Still managed to turn it into 7th in the state though.

A lot of 1-seeds lost tonight across all the regions. Really unexpected.

The road to the Ohio individual championship kicks off today as well, so best of luck to Dylan Shawver!

Dylan Shawver (Elyria) pin Jack Shepard (Avon Lake) - 1:13

Four of the five 8-seeds that upset the 1-seeds in regions 5 and 6 last night advanced to the region finals

Additionally 3 more 1-seeds between those 2 regions lost in the semi’s

Both Santaniello brothers whom I expect are RU targets both advanced to the finals in region 7.

He seems to have a mental block at regions. Needs to win WB2 to get in the 3rd place match and book a trip to AC

Region 7 -

All 14 #1 seeds are in the finals, only 5 #2 seeds are in the finals.

First time for me seeing Clark in the semis at R7.
Very quick and strong with a real good motor. Hit the firemen a few times.

Delbarton brought 13 wrestlers to districts (no heavyweight.) 12 of them won their district and the other took 2nd.

All 13 wrestlers advanced to the finals of regions. This team is nuts.

Epperly won his wrestleback a 31 second fall so at the very least he punched his ticket to AC. For the second year in a row he has a poor showing at the regions and will have a difficult seed in the state tournament.

Yet Blair Academy beat Delbarton by about 50 points, lol. Pretty sure that was the difference, and not sure what Delbarton guys were out injured for that match. Wrestling at Blair was probably a great way to improve for the Delbarton guys. Will be interesting to see who enters the High School Nationals in Virginia Beach, the end of March.

Blair has an unfair advantage against NJSIAA teams in that they can recruit nationwide. The private schools within the NJSIAA can recruit (illegally, but without any real repercussions) but are pretty much naturally restricted to the immediate area.
