RU Commits & HS Season Discussion Thread

Yeah, he was actually up late in the 2nd and then got reversed when he lost control trying to ride/turn him. Never had a good opportunity after that only to give up some points in the closing seconds trying to make something happen.

Weaver wins 20-10 but man did he put himself in some funky and dangerous positions. He nearly pinned himself a couple of times and nearly pinned the other kid multiple times. Wild match.

Dylan is crazy aggressive and constantly goes for the big shots/cradles, but needs to be careful (or finish them) against these top guys because he puts himself in some dangerous positions and almost pinned himself on numerous occasions

Seriously. I almost had a heart attack. He is fun to watch and I love his aggressiveness. He will have to learn more control as he matures.

Hamilton cruises into the finals with an easy 15-0 TF in the 2nd. He is just so much stronger and athletic that these guys, they literally don't even have a chance.

O'Neill in the hole on mat 2 at Powerade vs Shane Reitsma (Howell - Rider commit). Should be a hell of a matchup.

Reitsma is clearly the aggressor thus far, O'Neill hasn't got much off. Tied 2-2 going into the 3rd. Neutral start.

These officials change the call with no replay after the match was over. Jesus Christ.

I'm pretty sure Connor and his coach got DQed from the tournament

I wish O'Neil was more aggressive and took some shots, but I guess I just didn't understand that ending after the non-call initially.

The call was correct. O'Neill deserved to lose. Had a stalling warning against him and was passive, He has a lot of work to do moving forward.

Reitsma was clearly the aggressor throughout the match - State semis or finals rematch.

If they got disqualified, what an embarrassment. O'Neil should get a chance for revenge in the state tournament. Hopefully, he and his coach learn to respect the refs and recognize that the call was correct.

I agree that Reitsma was the aggressor and Connor didn't do much aside from the reversal but it wasn't originally called (even if it was the right call) and then a minute after the match ended in a tie you change the call without replay? That's a joke IMO. Without replay you need to stick to what you called since you can't be sure.

I'm not certain but he got docked a point for throwing his headgear and then the official said someone dropped an F bomb and that he is is gone. Not sure if it was the coach or Connor.

Damian Weaver won in the consolation bracket and will wrestler for 3rd

tough loss but I thought Reitsma was a little better today. I think O'Neil caught a break with Reitsma taking neutral in 3rd. The rematch will be electric in AC. Also wasn't a big fan of that headgear throw, most times you see that the wrestler will throw it to his corner, O'Neil threw it farther then any RU QB this season and that can be dangerous if it hits a little kid!

He will be fine. He won a tough tournament last week and was aggressive all day yesterday as well. He had an off day today and was probably too cautious. Never know what's going on with these kids day to day with illness, other issues, etc. He will most likely get another shot at Shane this year and I have a feeling he will be much better next time around. Credit to Reitsma though, he was aggressive and wrestled well. Put himself in position to win and did just that.

Connor can't lose his cool though, that can't happen. His coach kicked it off by getting into the refs face at the scorers table telling them it was awful, they don't know the rules, etc..I couldn't hear everything but I'm sure they weren't pleasant. Connor then launched his headgear out of the arena and then must have said F you to the ref after the fact. Again, that can't happen. I'm sure Goody won't be happy with that.

"n Saturday’s Walter Woods Holiday Classic, Watchung Hills’ John Dusza pinned Jackson Memorial’s Kyle Epperly to capture the 195-pound title. Nothing against Dusza, who went 26-11 last season as a promising sophomore, but Epperly recently signed a National Letter of Intent to wrestle at Rutgers and is a state placewinner."

"What makes the story even more amazing is that Dusza suffered a broken leg last spring after getting hit by a car while skateboarding. Fortunately, he recovered without permanent damage, but there were concerns that he wouldn’t be ready to wrestle until January."

"Saturday, Huff said that Epperly led 2-1 after the first period. In the second, Epperly escaped, got a take down and scored back points. He was up 7-1 when the Watchung Hills wrestler was able to counter a move and the two ended up in a scramble for positioning.

“He went to go put John to his back and John hip-heist over,” Huff said. “He had really good hips and was able to get on top and pin him. … Fortunately, he ended up on top of a 50-50 situation and he got the fall.”

And the gym’s reaction?

“The crowd was very loud, probably the loudest it was all day,” Huff said. “Behind us, we had the whole team supporting him and the coaches. The fans were going wild. So it was a cool moment for him and for the team.”

Epperly coming here is clearly a favor. Wasn’t impressed with him last year at all. Won the shore conference tournament because he was cradled up and the kid he was wrestling had his shoulder pop out (a nagging career-long injury) and couldn’t continue. I don’t think Epperly’s opponent from that match is even wrestling in college. Epperly then took 4th in a disappointing region performance before rallying to the podium in AC. He clearly doesn’t wrestle particularly well under any pressure.

I’ll root for the kid but I just don’t see anything that indicates big 10 caliber wrestler. I can’t imagine he’s getting more than 1% of a scholarship.

Headgear throwing is a pet peeve of mine. Grow up. If you need to take frustration out, go find a private space and let it out there.

Didn’t watch the match but I wouldn’t be surprised if O’Neil was intentionally passive. These two are going to meet in states where the stage is bigger and a good coach/wrestler won’t show too much before then.

Also Reitsma is a very good wrestler.

Threw my head gear once in grammar school in an open tournament. I got escorted by my coach who was sitting in the stands to behind the bleachers. The lambasting I took stuck with me for the rest of my life. I never threw my head gear again in 13 yrs. of wrestling. He was a family acquaintance and he always remembered that and we joked about it until his passing just a few years ago.
