The thing is - alot of Big Ten teams would look bad if they played OSU, Wisconsin, and Michigan all in a row. And then they would (as I suspect we will) look much better when they play a failing Nebraska, Army, and Maryland to end the season.
If Flood gets fired it wont be because he got blown out by the good Big Ten teams, it will be because he couldnt beat the bad ones - and so far that isnt the case.
Buggsy - the thing is - at alot of schools Flood would still have a job, particularly if he ekes into a bowl in a rebuilding year. Certainly going into this year. Coming out of it, less so, but most mid-low level P5 schools would have held on to him. Its very risky to change coaches. Even more so in a year when you are going to have to overpay (because there are alot of higher level openings, especially in our general vicinity). If we go 4-8 or 3-9 I think he gets fired, because as you state, we probably start to lose revenue.
But at even 5-7, I think he likely stays, because what we can afford in this market won't be a huge step up. And this should be the worst year for a couple of more (easier schedule, more experience at alot of positions.) If this were like 2013 when at the end of the season only Wake and USC were looking for a new coach, I think it would be alot easier decision - but we know right now that just in the east Miami, VT, USc, and Maryland (and probably Virginia) are all looking for coaches, plus Illinois and Minnesota within our conference, plus possibly others if their coaches get hired away by the USC or NFL of the world.
Flood has an uncanny knack for winning just enough games to keep his job.
Can we beat Nebraska - I would almost count on it. Flood rarely loses to teams outside the top 50.
Here's every Massey top 30 team we've played since 05 and the scores.
FWIW, I look at this and see a lot of embarrassing scores in the last couple of years, but I look at what we did under Schiano and see that we got stomped by some pretty bad teams about once year. Schiano was more feast of famine, in that he also played better teams close (and even beat them on occasion), but he'd also lay more eggs against bad teams.
yeah, exactly why Gary wasn't the best either but now he looks like a god again compared to Barney Fife.
At 6-6 no he's not gone. I think he survives.
But to get to 6-6 Flood has to beat Army, Maryland, and Nebraska ('because we sure as hell aren't beating Michigan.)
I think we can beat Army and Maryland, but nothing to this point shows me that we can beat Nebraska....and I know they stink this year and just lost to Purdue.
Just as long as your are ready to pony up and bail out the next Steve Kragthorpe after three years if it comes to that. The blowout losses over the years under Flood are staggering. RU is no longer known for Defense. This mindset of doing just enough to get by is what's holding back the program. RU needs to break away from this and bet on the future.
GO RU
I doubt anybody across the whole country other than RU fans thinks or cares about RU football very much one way or another. And I have yet to see anybody on this board claim that Flood is the long term answer to RU football becoming a respected Big Ten team. The great divide. On one hand the whole country and vast majority on these boards that see what a joke Rutgers football has become and the other hand those in power (pres/bog) who could give two sh#ts about the football program. Then throw in the few numb nuts on this board that think Flood is the answer. What a mess.
It's really a shame that our AD's name rarely comes up these days in discussing Flood's future. She has been neutered of all authority in the most important decision an AD has to make. If it is truly up to Barchi and the BOG to determine the fate of the head football coach, I wonder why she would continue to work under such limiting circumstances and not move on out of self-respect and pride. My thoughts are:
If Flood was going to be terminated it would have happened once the investigation of his actions were finalized and RU received that report. RU probably felt it would be hard to use the for cause and I wouldn't be surprised if the buyout money is what's kept Kyle as HC and will be the reason he comes back as HC next season , even with a 4-8 record.
Unless the boosters pay his buyout, RU won't dump Flood because Barchi/BOG will refuse to.

Half teens, half twenties. But then again you knew that. And then again, high school football has its appeal, but after attending the Rutgers women's soccer game against Minny yesterday I'll be checking out more soccer, both men's and women's. I'll also go to my first wrestling match this season. So you've settled in for NJ High School Football? Is that what you mean?

Its not a riskless proposition. It might be obvious at the end of this season - but if we go 6-6 (3-5) in a rebuilding season in the Big Ten, thats hardly a bad season. Now if we go 3-9 (1-7), thats a different story. 5-7 (2-6) is probably bad enough to fire the guy if you are confident that you can get a real upgrade and not just a MAC/AAC flavor of the month.
This is basically what I've been trying to say for a few weeks now. Our current admin does not collectively strike me as the gambling type. And just about any new hire we make is an expensive gamble w/low odds of seeing success (success being defined as regularly beating the elite teams in the Big Ten). I also don't see them wanting to spend millions just to see us losing those games by fewer points. The thing is - alot of Big Ten teams would look bad if they played OSU, Wisconsin, and Michigan all in a row. And then they would (as I suspect we will) look much better when they play a failing Nebraska, Army, and Maryland to end the season.

Gotta remember this article's conclusions are based on MERIT. I'm sure they don't consider buyouts, available money, administration attitude, etc.
When it comes to a school wanting to fire a coach, seriously, how significant is the buyout consideration? The cost of a new coach contract? While Maryland is in deep doodoo financially in their athletic dept, Edsall is gone and they're saying they'll pay $3-4 million. While here at Rutgers....
I wouldn't say a combined 108-58 is A LOT better than 108-34.Maryland just played:
L vs michigan 28 to 0
L vs ohio state 49 to 28
L vs penn state 31 to 30
That looks a lot better than our complete blowouts.
Julie is a "lifer" in college athletics administration. Pernetti was not. Julie's career will be defined by what she can accomplish at Rutgers. Other than his passion for Rutgers as a former player and grad, Pernetti's future was not going to be defined by his success or failure as an AD.She has the authority and can do it, but neutered by the finances she receives to pay for change.
The pride part is doing thew best you can with what tools you have to work with, she's not doing bad using what she has to work with.
Tim Pernetti had the same type of financial limitations Hermann is working under, do you think he should have resigned ( before Rice fiasco) because Barchi / BOG wasn't giving him the financial tools to help him make RU FB, MBB and other sports programs the financial support to make them the best they could be?
Do you think Flood was Tim's first choice and Mario C was the best he thought was out there ?
Or was it that the Athletic budget couldn't afford to bring in better choices that might be available if the price was right.
Because MD realistically could have stayed in the ACC, while RU could not have stayed in the AAC.Doesn't hurt to have the B1G front you 50 mil. to pay for your exit from your old conference and then some pocket change. Also doesn't hurt when UA then adds another 155 mil. on top of it. But RU's overture's to Delany for an advance have fallen on deaf ears, while we're still paying to get out of the AAC. We've been left to fend for ourselves for now, while Maryland for some reason was treated like the goose that lays the golden egg.
We havent played Michigan yet. On the other hand, MD hasnt played MSU either. MDs defense seems to be about as bad as ours, but their offense is better.I wouldn't say a combined 108-58 is A LOT better than 108-34.

seems like many of you get such JOY out of bashing the team
NONE of us get a say in who gets fired or hired
I would love Lou Saban to come to the Banks
wont happen.....we have never EVER had a national caliber coach show interest
Sure...Flood isnt a great coach
But he is our coach and he isnt going anywhere
I prefer to support the team
not bash it
I totally get that Maryland had all the bargaining power when they were in the ACC and we had no choice and were saved from certain death. But Julie has made overtures to him about receiving an advance and it has been denied. Then for him to sit through a rain delay during an indoor volleyball match had to open his eyes on how broke we are and are in need of cash now not in June 2021. By then it will probably be to late as the hole to climb out of will be too vast. We were brought in for a purpose TV sets and it has been shown we delivered on that already. Why not show a little love back. I know I'm just grasping at straws here as really it's our own administration fault for not borrowing against future earning at the lowest rates seen in the last few decades. But they really can't be trusted to do anything right and I've barked up that tree before. As I'm still amazed this strategy hasn't already been employed prior to our entrance into the B1G. New facilities and a new found culture of winning would have paid for these loans by themselves.Because MD realistically could have stayed in the ACC, while RU could not have stayed in the AAC.
no actually I didn't. I wasn't sure which you meant. I could argue the point of just watching HS football vs. Rutgers..certainly A LOT less frustrating.Half teens, half twenties. works for me... this is true :)Maybe we should call him Andy instead of Gary, because there were a few years when he was HC, RU FB fans felt like they were in Mayberry
Flood is just as good as Schiano. The only difference is that expectations are so high now that no coach here at Rutgers can meet them. Maybe Belichick can but he is not coming here anytime soon.

You're kidding right? You can't be serious with this statement. Please don't tell me you really think Flood is as good as Schiano. I understand that Schiano wasn't great, but our team looks lost in at least half the games we play. Our two best wins are comeback victories verse Indiana and Maryland. The fact that we had to comeback as much as we did verse those teams is embarrassing. We are unprepared for every game, regardless of who it is.Flood is just as good as Schiano. If Carroo plays we can beat Nebraska. Almost beat MSU by himself.
"can"? Sure, but IMHO we won't. The Huskers are going to take a ton of frustrations from this season, out on us, you can almost count on it. 4 games lost on the final drive, 2 on Hail Mary's, 5 TO's in loss to Purdue on a rainy day, almost beat Wiscy...this all leads up to 1 things in the "world of Rutgers Football as we know it...."....not a good afternoon for the home team.
The main worry should be: can Flood take advantage of a team on a downward spiral or will he coach bad enough to lose to a team that just can't get over the hump.
