Basketball Rutgers Basketball's upset bid of No. 9 Alabama falls short in second Players Era game

Bama not impressive, we got killed on the boards, killed in the 3 point game and still hung with them the whole way. Bama looks very beatable.
I don’t think bama played particularly well but it was our weaknesses as a team especially on defense that allowed them to play poorly and stay in the lead all night.

Reid plowed over Derkack late, no call. Would have been his 5th. Instead, he ends up making several big plays down the stretch.

First foul on Williams... huh? I thought he was going to box out Cliff on a shot attempt, not just hit a guy passing through. Really didn't see a foul there. It came back to haunt us later.

We need some help from the bench. Tonight wasn't good there other than good effort.

Saturday is kind of a must win for comijg out of the week where we wanted to be in the worst case, 6-2. Then rest up to get that dumb Columbus monkey off our back. We are owed a win there.

We don't shoot the 3 or rebound, plus have a weak bench and still almost won the game. The problem is if Dylan and Ace don't come up huge EVERY night we are in trouble.

Harper and Bailey scored 59 points which is outstanding.Rutgers loss the game because of rebounding and the failure to make 3 point shots.Tremendous college game between two teams that kept scoring because of all the foul shots.

Team could be more potent if we shared the ball
We never really moved the ball around. It was all 1 v 1, sometimes with 1 pass. We did nothing to make Bama work hard on D.

They made us run all over the place, especially in the first half, with lots of passes and picks. We got more tired than them.

So yeah, we would be more potent if we passed the ball a lot more. Get it back to Ace and Dylan for shots. But get 5-6 passes and better picks in first, forcing opponents to switch and chase. Wear them down.

Our one reliable 3 point shooter cant play because hes too slow on D (hayes). However, the white big on bama aint too good as cliff isnt either so if cliff or the white kid are in at center id go small ball and have martini there at the 5 to give us another shooter
That whit dude has game and he manhandled LS on offensive FT rebound. He is alot stronger than you think

I’d argue differently.

The same flaws sunk us.
1. not rebounding on defensive glass
2. Embarrassing shooting behind the arc

I’m pretty confident #1 will be a major wart that sinks the team multiple times this season.

#2 we might have some nights where the portal guys actually make a few. But overall it’s another season of being a bottom tier 3 point shooting team
Basically this
Great, Harper dropped 36 and Ace is a stud.
After that our supporting cast didn’t do much and we can’t rebound or defend. Someone tell me why I should expect different the rest of the way. Also, what is up with our defensive rotations. Wide open threes. And then when our guards get blown by, there is no center to block the shot. We were close but there isn’t a ton I like

They turned the ball over 20 times, we had many defensive lapses, we got destroyed on the boards, we got destroyed at the 3 point line and WE STILL HAD THE BALL UNDER 1 MINUTE DOWN 2 WITH A CHANCE TO TAKE THE LEAD. Bama defense was not that good (Rutgers only turned it over 9 times), Bama 20 turnovers and they are not that great defensively. They live by the three and they very well may die by the 3, they will likely be a 1 or 2 seed but I will not be shocked at all if they get beaten in the tourney before the final four.

Agreed. There were really no easy baskets for us. We just have two supremely talented players who can score in almost any situation . Our offense doesn't create easy shots or get people open except when Dylan draws double teams.

They beat us on their offensive boards.

The TBS post-game isn’t leading with the Alabama win - they are talking (fawning actually) over Harper and Bailey.
Because Rutgers was the better team to watch in the second half. What analysis could they do for Bama in the second half, “look at that great form on the free throw” .. they had no highlights

Yup…disagree
The roster construction is already looking poor. Need more from Martini, Hayes, and Acuff. All three are awful defenders, not adding rebounding, or scoring. Missed on toughness when evaluating what to add in the portal. The rebounding and defense need to improve if the team is going to do anything.

JMike needs to be benched for good, Derkack needs to be reigned in.
You sound like you have never played basketball I. Your life.

Interesting stats. We win the TO battle 20-9 and the FT battle (30-35 vs. 25-36), which usually bodes really well, but we lost the rebounding battle 43-30 and especially the 3-pt battle, 10-25 vs. 2-12. Losing JWill really hurt as he was playing very well and Derkack/Acuff didn't play nearly as well in his absence.
Yes but RU didn’t take full advantage by scoring after TOs. Especially in the first half with many empty possessions.

GO RU

I’ll say this as well. And I hate to say it because I pray it doesn’t happen ….

But Harper’s style of play is not sustainable for a full college season. None the less as a freshmen. He takes A LOT of physical contact every game. VERY often getting hit while in the air. His usage volume is insane. I fear one of these drives he’s going to get hurt or if he doesn’t then he’s going to be worn down the back end of the season - happens to even the best freshmen who don’t have the volume he’s getting

It wasnt their best game but did you see the game vs Houston last night or vs Illinois. They have so many options offensively and rebound very good. Their TO situation was a disaster true and I think they did take RU somewhat lightly

They have the tools.

Most teams loose when 2 best players have awful games. How often did we win when Geo and Ron were throwing up bricks. Can’t do that without elite defense.

This game took alot out of us. Don't see us winning the next one. We waste to many possessions, for a team that can't get stops. Harper is unstoppable, but he's not beating top teams by himself. Gotta learn to get teammates more involved
Which teammates exactly ? it’s not a good roster. Summerville, Ogbole, Derkack, Martini and JMiss bring next to nothing on offense, and Pike must think Hayes is unplayable for D reasons. And Acuff isn’t the answer.

3 $5s, 2 $10s and a $20 will not ever equal a hundred bucks no matter how you rearrange them in your wallet. Our superstar isn’t a magician.

We have to figure out a way to get open 3s for guys like Martini , Hayes and Acuff....If we can develop that into the offense we are going to be tough to stop..

The guards and wings to pair with Dylan and Ace just don’t really fit well. This was an offseaon talking point. Hayes fits well but admittedly in a gamr against team like bama he just can’t get on the floor. Hopefully in conference play he can find his niche. Because those wide open dercack threes tonight either off penetration or as simple as offensive rebound tap out, are absolute onions if in Hayes hands.

It just feels like Pike has already feel in love with Dercack yet if we could find a better offensive fitting piece in his role that wasn’t a total liability on defense like Hayes, we would be in good shape. And even though for us it seems dercack is an option when we need more D, it was a bit alarming to me anyway that Bama basically hunted him on offense the last quarter of the game.
