Basketball Rutgers Basketball's upset bid of No. 9 Alabama falls short in second Players Era game

They beat us on their offensive boards.
If we could rebound and made 5 three pointers we win this game by 10. That’s why I say Bama not that impressive, they should have beaten us by 15-20 considering they won the 3 point game by a huge margin and we could not get a defensive rebound. They didn’t blow us out, the reason is they have flaws and can be beaten. We almost beat them and we had huge flaws tonight, RU did a lot of great stuff too. Rutgers walked away more impressive than Bama, more positive game and confidence builder for Rutgers.

I’ll say this as well. And I hate to say it because I pray it doesn’t happen ….

But Harper’s style of play is not sustainable for a full college season. None the less as a freshmen. He takes A LOT of physical contact every game. VERY often getting hit while in the air. His usage volume is insane. I fear one of these drives he’s going to get hurt or if he doesn’t then he’s going to be worn down the back end of the season - happens to even the best freshmen who don’t have the volume he’s getting

Agree its not sustainable long term

And this is Vegas Pike was always going allow him to volume shoot...returning to the rac may see his attempts go back under 20. For big games tho he might have to carry the team

Have you ever watched Brunson play? Same style

Go watch the Knicks play and focus on Brunson. Same style of play and he has longevity

I dont know when was the last time you had to keep score at bowling...its been as automatic for like 50+ years.
lol, definitely showing my age, but we kept score manually 30 years ago. :) Automated scoring isn't perfect, but it's a great innovation to make sure things are accurate.... Wouldn't it be nice if basketball officiating were as consistent?

Yes, needed to be said. He won’t get to the line 15 times in a conference game. Need much more from the bench

If RU had a sharpshooter 3 specialist they would be very dangerous.
That’s exactly what we went all out for in the portal. None of those guys are stepping into the role though. Martini had good % so far this season but missed the very few opportunities tonight .

The bigger problem is these supposed sharp shooters aren’t making shots and are an even bigger liability on defense. Acuff, Hayes, martini … teams are just going right at them if they’re in the game.

It’s the supporting cast that needs to step up. Their feel for the game is just a bit out of touchZ

Dercack taking to the basket to try and dunk rather than a guaranteed layup that is still 2pts makes a big difference.
I just realize they don’t have a great feel for the game yet and truly understand their roles

Never seen someone eat more contact at both ends of the court and not get a single call
Refs like to use the build up to contact to help make calls and dercack just rarely gets defenders out of position. Refs imo are often in spots where they are watching action and then anticipating to make a call based on the action before the contact, and then following through at the contact point.

They were playing against 2 NBA players - one of which was basically perfect from the field and line in the 2nd half.

Harper is almost too good at driving and scoring. Why kick it out for three when it's almost a guaranteed layup or foul.
Why? Bc if we can actually prove we can hit them then it will open up more opportunities for him. Teams will start doubling him to prevent the drives. Need the supporting cast to step up.

JD hits that corner 3 tonight we may all be celebrating rather than trying to convince ourselves this was a good loss

The guards and wings to pair with Dylan and Ace just don’t really fit well. This was an offseaon talking point. Hayes fits well but admittedly in a gamr against team like bama he just can’t get on the floor. Hopefully in conference play he can find his niche. Because those wide open dercack threes tonight either off penetration or as simple as offensive rebound tap out, are absolute onions if in Hayes hands.

It just feels like Pike has already feel in love with Dercack yet if we could find a better offensive fitting piece in his role that wasn’t a total liability on defense like Hayes, we would be in good shape. And even though for us it seems dercack is an option when we need more D, it was a bit alarming to me anyway that Bama basically hunted him on offense the last quarter of the game.
Pike being in love with a Mulcahy regen is not surprising. Derkack more athletic than Paul but there are similarities.

Love Dylan and he plays like a Pro but want to see him continue to break down defenses into the paint and kick out every so often to players like Hayes, Acuff and Ace for open knockdown threes. Especially when he’s basically being triple teamed with a defender leaving outside shooter and coming backside to swipe the ball. Don’t mind trading some of Dylan’s twos for made threes.

Pleus we can’t have offensive players ball watching Dylan trying to go full Jalen Brunson every game but love Dylan’s game. We just need others to step up and give Dylan and Ace some scoring support.

GO RU

That’s a whopper of an if. He’s a poor shooter. By that logic, why not also say that we’d be celebrating if Ogbole scored 30 and had 20 boards ?

Which teammates exactly ? it’s not a good roster. Summerville, Ogbole, Derkack, Martini and JMiss bring next to nothing on offense, and Pike must think Hayes is unplayable for D reasons. And Acuff isn’t the answer.

3 $5s, 2 $10s and a $20 ever equal a hundred bucks no matter how you rearrange them in your wallet. Our superstar isn’t a magician.
Not true. Derkack can pass, and is a decent finisher. Ace can shoot, Acuff can shoot - Martini and Hayes also. But ball movement needs to be involved. Standing flat footed, waiting to see if Dylan will share, isn't going to work. Hard to gain rhythm that way

It wasnt their best game but did you see the game vs Houston last night or vs Illinois. They have so many options offensively and rebound very good. Their TO situation was a disaster true and I think they did take RU somewhat lightly

They have the tools.
Yes, saw those games. No doubt they have the tools and their roster is stacked. But, I am saying they have flaws and play very, very loose, up and down the floor basketball. On a night when their threes don’t fall and the opponent is hot (shooting threes better than RU did tonight), I am saying this team can be taken down. UConn last season had very few flaws and played great all around at both ends of the floor. I don’t see Bama as that type of team as a clear cut favorite to win it all. Rutgers walks away as the more impressive team and with more to hang its hat on. I doubt Nate Oats is happy, glad to get a win but he knows they dominated a team on the boards and dominated a team at the 3 point line and barely snuck out with a win.

It’s clear that the starting 5 for Pike is going to be:

Harper
JWill
Dercack
Ace
EO

I think the only way to make this work consistently is if Ace is shooting a lot of 3’s. Can’t have the other end of the drive and kick be JWill and Dercack, they just aren’t good enough shooter. It would be great if Hayes and Martini could slide in, but is the defense good enough?

Yeah, but he didn't hit it because he's not good.

Agree here..very NBA like.

Rather see good ball movement and getting the open and beat shot. Once lathan or ace touch the ball it’s a black hole. Ace has potential to hit them always but they aren’t overly efficient.

With those two players we could create some
Really Great looks for spot up shots even for Ace.

Because your not beating top teams by yourself. Getting teammates involved, elevates their efforts overall. Which makes life easier for Dylan, and improves Rutgers chances of winning games

The rest of the team shot 9 for 38 (6 for 34 if you take out Williams - who is the only other player on the team that can handle the ball).
You’re over the top negative takes on everything are hysterical. Williams is the only other person that can handle the ball. Too funny.

I'm not disagreeing with you. It's just during the game, especially in the second half when you need a bucket, it's hard not to just have Dylan take over and get the two.

They need to have some plays run for a drive and kick to Hayes, Acuff or Martini. I have a feeling Pike knows this too. Hopefully it'll be addressed.

This was a good loss. No one even cared that Bama squeaked it out. All the talk is about Harper and to a bit lesser extent Bailey. If they win Saturday, wouldn't be surprised if ranked again. Tournament a guarantee. If we somehow shit bed, we will be given every benefit in world.

I must of missed all the valuble contributions everyone else on the team made tonight with the ball in their hands. My super-favorite is when Derkack takes the ball and just drives wildly towards the basket (I'm not even sure he looks at the basket, he just wildly drives towards its general location) and then gets his dunk blocked by the rim.

Ideally -- you try to get your teammates going, and take over when needed. Hunting your own shot for 40 minutes, is capping the potential of the team

It may be some nights. Alabama plays at a really fast pace and has a lot of really good athletes, it was tough to find minutes for Martini and PJ against them. They’re not good defenders but there will be matchups where it’ll be easier to hide that.

that is the hope.

our win total ceiling this year might be a function of which teams allow for those shooters to get on the floor and how many times the Harper/Ace combo can explode for large numbers of points that puts us over the edge.

Bama outrebounded Houston who has under their coach kills it on the boards.

The tale of the tape for the season comes down to which of these transfers or holdovers becomes a reliable third option and more importantly who becomes an outside threat because we look as bad shooting 3s as every other year

Even though we were -13 on the glass I felt more optimistic with how we competed for the boards versus previous games and free throws aren’t an issue anymore

It comes down to who gives RU consistent 12-14 ppg behind your two stars
