Who has the Authority to fire Hobbs and Ash ASAP ?

My theory (for which I have absolutely no evidence) is that Hobbs/Barchi feel they have to give Ash enough time so that his prospective successors are not scared away by the thought that they too might be fired after only a few years. That explains to me why Ash is getting a fourth year, but I don't think it guarantees him a fifth, and certainly not more than that.

That is logical. Also 4 years is more than fair to see if the program is heading in the right direction. As we can all clearly see we are not getting better. There is zero reason to think that year 5 or 6 will be any different than what we have already seen.

More importantly Rutgers is now bleeding Money in lost ticket sales, parking, seat donations, food and merchandise.

They must stop the bleeding and get the fanbase excited again. The only way to do that at this point is to name a new HC and staff.

But no other B1G program was in the same position as Rutgers--in a total rebuild mode. None. There is hope, however. Darell Hazell was horrific as Purdue's coach.
6-30 overall/ 2-22 in the B1G after 3 seasons. Ash is 7-29 overall and 3-24, which is much better than Hazell. :Sly: Hazell got at least part of a 4th year, and he was 3-3 when he got canned after getting beat 49-35 by Iowa.

What will be interesting is if Ash will get fired during the year. I think he should, but Hobbs has said before that he does not fire coaches mid year. We shall see.

But as @rutgersguy1 has pointed out, there is no recipe for success or failure. Hazell had head coaching experience, coming in after an 11-3 season as head coach of Kent State. Still think the preference will be a coach with head coaching experience.

You are correct that there is no magic bullet. But I do believe Maryland fired their coach after 3 years- granted with scandal- and it seems so far so good for them. They also hired a HC who was popular with their fans, even though many others including myself had doubts.

I think it was just a matter of priorities with Hobbs. He tried to buy a year of time, hoping that the X% that Ash would turn it around was a significant number. Letting another year go by has two positives -- Ash would be owed for one fewer year and Rutgers will be taking in more conference money (and closer to its first big year of payouts that starts July 1, 2020.

The $100 million wasn't a fake number. Nor are the amount of facilities that have been built. It's just a matter of priorities.

Based on the numbers I have seen, RU is going to be hurt by a sizaable drop in season tix renewals. Financially, whether he is a great fundraiser or not, I do not think the numbers add up.

I think filling the stadium should be a priority at a B1G program, and RU has shown that even the prospect of a bowl game will do that.

It's definitely a consideration. No coach in their right mind is going to come here and look at the apathetic fan base, next to no season ticket holders, and the few who are left disgruntled, lack of talent and no recruiting pipelines, and say yea, I am fixing this mess in 3 years.

Rutgers is more than a huge build. It's tear down and rebuild. This isn't plug and play U like a school like USC.

And that's with the right hire which is a crapshoot with our budget constraints.

That combined with he came from the political Trenton network, then worked at Seton Hall ,a school WITHOUT A FOOTBALL PROGRAM.What qualifications, based on his background, and now track record, should Hobbs be entrusted to hire the next football coach?

None. Unless the next hire is urban. Hobbs should have his number if urban didn’t block it before calling back on the ash recommendation.

The BOG told him this?

Again, I have no inside information, but I doubt the problem was the BOG denying Hobbs permission to fire Ash. Hobbs' immediate supervisor is Barchi, and so Barchi would have to approve a firing. My sense is that the BOG likes Barchi a lot, and so I think that if Barchi wanted Ash gone, Barchi could have pulled that off. Evidently Hobbs, Barchi or both didn't want a dismissal after last season., perhaps for the reason I suggested above: the desire to attract a new coach by showing that the old coach had been given enough time.

Not ready to anoint Maryland worldbeaters, but they have demonstrated in their first 2 games (Howard--cough, cough and Syracuse) a potent offense. Who knows if Syracuse is any good this year? Durkin stockpiled talent. His firing was totally different than the Ash situation. But they went in an interesting direction in bringing back a coach who served as an offensive position coach and failed as a head coach but rehabbed under Nick Saban. Kyle Flood fits that description for Rutgers. 0__0

Looks like Lynn Swan got the boot. Don't know why he got the job in the first place...must've been his football background. Clay Helton might not be far behind if he doesn't right the ship...then we can get Graham Harrell as OC if not HC lol.

People extrapolate too much beyond the present. I always say take the accomplishment for what it is in the moment. He's had a good first two games...and that's it. If he has a good year...then he's had a good year and that's it. Consistency is what you want and that's only known with time.

Hoke started strong and how did he end up. Fuente (who I liked) started strong and is similarly fading...can he right the ship? Macintyre in Colorado was bad for awhile then had a "breakout" year with double digit wins right? Nope...followed it up with lousy years. When you see things over time and results over and over...then you can draw a reasonable conclusion otherwise it's just short term results for the moment.

The interim President is an unknown. If she was smart, which it seems like what she is doing, she'd immediately ingratiate herself to the football people. They are the most important people at the school. Good news for her is almost everyone of influence there is into football.

At this point if RU dropped 63 points on any p5 team I would pop the champagne, lol. We are that far back.

The numbers do indicate it would have been cheaper to fire Ash IF the replacement could win. That calculus changes a little depending on what you put as the next coach's chance to win. It is possible that Hobbs figured that the next coach may have a better chance to win if he waited another year as Hobbs would then have more funds available for the hire.

Anyway, I think the point is that he did raise funds. Hobbs just elected to spend them on other priorities. But at least there is concrete proof that funds have been raised and are being spent on facilities.

Let's not jump to a hasty conclusion. Maryland had a similarly bad result against Iowa last year in Iowa, but put up 51 points against Ohio State and beat Texas. Just like the UMass game, 1 game does not make a season.

I don't really agree with this. A young coach could look at it as an opportunity to improve a team that won 3 or 4 games in the previous two seasons and figure that if turned into a bowl team, the coach will be in demand elsewhere.

It could be a good stepping stone for someone. Moderate success will be all that is needed.

Not to mention, there is enough talent (on paper) to build immediately with the right coach and staff in place. Bring in a good grad transfer qb and things would immediately improve.

Yea, a young coach with no real history that we'd be taking a chance on. They have nothing to lose.

I think we are trying to get away from them and get someone that has a better track record. But those people are smart and savvy. They aren't going into a bad situation and seeing the last guy get canned after 3 years and say that's a good situation.

We can agree to disagree on the overall talent level compared to our conference peers.

Football knowledge is a freaking prerequisite to being a great P5 AD. Get with the program!!!!!!! :Sly:

EDIT- I was a huge fan of the 1970's Steelers, including Lynn Swann. Wonder what happened that he turned out to be such a bad AD?

And where the hell is Aranda in your wishlist? Have you dropped him from consideration? Did he block you on Twitter? :Laughing

What about the Hollywood crowd that buys their way into USC, or were they only paying outside help to grease the skids for their clients?

But do we want to gamble again on a young (and likely inexperienced) coach? Isn't that how we got Chris Ash? Do we want someone who will leave at the first opportunity? Do we want to gamble again on a grad transfer QB, when that strategy has already failed once and looks like it could (we don't know for sure) fail again?

It ain't just the Hollywood crowd. More on that front coming.

I've got no issues with that. It's as silly as someone getting in school simply because of their sexual orientation or color.

A gamed system to be gamed.

I doubt he would have raised the funds he did if not attached to facility improvement.

And it's a damn good thing he did. Facilities need to be improved. Further improved.

I cannot speak for everyone but the sense I get reading here and elsewhere is all fans want is some hope- even if it was rough down the stretch more people would have renewed and that is money in hand.

I would just disagree with any assessment that coaches in the two major sports are not priority 1A and B. While RU struggles financially, we do well enough moving towards the black when we win.

A cool name to look at who "retired" is
Mark Richt.hes won everywhere, though not enough for Georgia or Canes, but hes a winner, only 59 years old and "retired".?

What was Schiano when he first came here and still so many fawn over him now. Plus some here think youth and vigor is required to do the grind to lift us up...I personally don't but it's fine if you do.

Personally, whether it be HC or coordinator I'm looking for acumen on offense or plenty of offensive connections/influence so as not to be confused in how to implement it...hopefully some instances of doing more with less in their careers as well and someone who won't totally forget the other side of the ball that's not their expertise. Give me that and I'm satisfied...if it works great and if not try again with those same criteria.

He left his alma mater...I doubt he's coming back and if he does not likely this soon and not likely to us.

Still like him, nothing changed but again still would want to know his philosophy on offense just like any other DC. He's been associated with spread guys from the get go (Leach GA) outside of Wisconsin but you don't know until you know.....and again people here would hate him because he's a watching paint dry guy introvert type like Chryst but a huge football junkie and creative mind. Who knows maybe if he did get a job he might bring Brady along as OC...I'd guess LSU might quickly promote Brady then but you never know.

In all seriousness, the jury s out on Hobbs. I give him credit for fundraising and for the Olympic sports but success at this level is judged by Mens FB and BB. No one will dispute football has not turned out well. I know a lot of posters are high on the Pike hire but the fact remains no NCAA bids or NIT's under his watch. A few upsets but still a lower tier B1G squad. If BB fails to make the post season again this year, how does that hire look? Combine it with FB and maybe it is time for a change.

And the great thing about sports is that ash and Hobbs still control their own destiny. The games still get to be played. Win and fans come back and they get paid

Takes the cake as one of your worst posts. Are you serious about what you typed?
Do you know what a blue blood program is?
History and tradition of winning?
100,000 plus sold out stadium going back years?

Maybe Maryland is back. Let's pump the brakes a bit on that one.

RU could be back with the right head coach hire. Maybe in a year or two, some will realize (and even admit) that it was wise to wait another year to fire Ash.
finally, some one that knows what a blue blood is it is decades, and decades of support, and success. compared to.....the" birthplace of college football"
the only way this program gets turned around if it hires a blue blood coach....a saban. a meyer, a sweeny,...first off they would never come here, and second ru would never pay them, and their staff.....being in the big 10 is causing a real dilemma. getting all that money is hard to turn down. but now you must compete with the BLUE BLOODS for recruits, and wins every year.......wow
i see no. light at the end of the tunnel.......i'm going to love seeing how this turns out........pat hobbs better pull a rabbit out of his arse.

We don’t need a blue blood coach to be competitive . With schiano’s 3 year stale leftovers and an awful head coach this school went 8-5 in the big, and that included a big win at navy and a beat down over unc in the bowl.

If I'm still putting in the long hours a Rutgers rebuild requires at 59, something seriously went wrong with my planning somewhere along the way.

This rebuild requires a young coach. Not some guy living off the faded memories of last decade.

The infamous "we did it" quote.
What a joke.

Back to what? They were pretty much a punching bag in the ACC except for the early Fridge years.
2 NCAA Championships since 1951, 4 Gator Bowls, 2 Sugar Bowls, 3 Orange Bowls (last one in 2001), 1 Cotton Bowl, 2 Peach Bowls and a myriad of other minor bowls. In 2003, they beat West Virginia 41-7 in the Gator Bowl with the Fridge at the helm, that is correct. They don't have a great football history and I think they are in for a rude awakening on Saturday but they have accomplished more than we have in football.
