Who has the Authority to fire Hobbs and Ash ASAP ?

My theory (for which I have absolutely no evidence) is that Hobbs/Barchi feel they have to give Ash enough time so that his prospective successors are not scared away by the thought that they too might be fired after only a few years. That explains to me why Ash is getting a fourth year, but I don't think it guarantees him a fifth, and certainly not more than that.

That is what we call scared leadership and overthinking. How about tell the next coach - “we fired Ash after 3 years because we couldn’t fire him after 2.. now go out there and win”

It's definitely a consideration. No coach in their right mind is going to come here and look at the apathetic fan base, next to no season ticket holders, and the few who are left disgruntled, lack of talent and no recruiting pipelines, and say yea, I am fixing this mess in 3 years.

Rutgers is more than a huge build. It's tear down and rebuild. This isn't plug and play U like a school like USC.

And that's with the right hire which is a crapshoot with our budget constraints.

It’s just not true what you’re saying. There are absolutely coaches who feel like they can win here and rather easily and quickly.
Winning games isn’t the difficult part, you can do that by out-scheming. It’s the consistency over time that is the true test.

You need coaches that know how to win. Look at Friedgen when he was here. We suddenly looked competent on offense. Hell even when Jerry Kill was here we had at least a somewhat competitive team compared to the year before And after he left. Hire a proven winner Head Coach. And put up some money to do it. We are not gonna be an attractive destination now. Ash saw to that. We re gonna have to sweeten the pot.

Who feels they can win here easily and quickly? Names.

But do we want to gamble again on a young (and likely inexperienced) coach? Isn't that how we got Chris Ash? Do we want someone who will leave at the first opportunity? Do we want to gamble again on a grad transfer QB, when that strategy has already failed once and looks like it could (we don't know for sure) fail again?

Two separate issues. Transfer (and Frosh) qbs are starting and excelling all over the place.

As for coaches, Rutgers pays significantly more than every school in the MAC, Mountain West, CUSA, and Sun Belt, and most in the AAC. That's a good pool to choose from. The notion that Rutgers pays too little to get someone decent is not true given the above.

I don't understand why people keep saying Hobbs has made good hires in other sports. Most of those hires are 1 or 2 years in. Just because you hire someone new, doesn't make it a good hire. I'm optimistic with a few of them, no doubt, but let's actually see in 4-5 years.

People need to understand that our olympics sports were going to improve no matter what just by being in the big ten. We can attract a better player, better coaches and have more money to spend. Are some of Hobbs’ hires good ? Sure why not.. but if he didn’t make them, someone else would have

There is not an experienced coach in America that thinks they can win easily at Rutgers. This has been the case for years. Sure some young guy from Ohio State can sell a certain AD a bill of goods...

Good, established, Coaches won’t touch the Rutgers Job with a 100’ pole, because it requires too much work, unless Rutgers way overpays. This would be like a risk premium situation.

Yeah, no. Not the case and no guarantee that would have been the case.

Both should be fired. Be we have a incompetent school that doesn’t give a shit about athletics.

Oh stop it. I respect you and your history, but you are being overly dramatic.
You want to look for the problem?--Barchi.

Barchi fires Mike Rice. Without an AD, Rutgers hired Eddie Jordan. Pat fixed that mistake. He will fix his own mistake.

Barchi fires Flood and Hermann simultaneously. Barchi goes it alone, without a search or a hiring committee, and quickly hires Hobbs. Hobbs was under the gun to hire someone for the recruiting class. Hobbs was given a paltry $2 million budget to hire a coach. You get what you pay for. If I was in Hobbs' position, and if given the opportunity to hire again, if I was given a budget of anything less than $3.5 million for a new head coach, I would resign.

This situation falls squarely on Barchi and the BOG. Yeah, it is real fashionable to call for the AD's head. I'm sure your post will garner lots of likes. Be careful what you wish for.

EXACTLY. And Barchi didn't even fire Rice properly because of not watching the damn video.

I've said it elsewhere, but I would hire an associate AD whose primary responsibility is football. Or as I've also said, just ask the folks at Temple who they would hire if they had an opening this year. They seem to get it right over and over, sort of like Cincinnati.

I think i'm Clare Voyent ! lol, What started as a post Iowa question rant, starting to get answered.

" So Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs finally pulled the trigger on his horrible hire, firing coach Chris Ash Sunday following a 52-0 loss to Michigan that left Ash 8-32 for his three seasons-plus. Hobbs, who is little more than a fundraiser, hired Ash in five days after conducting his own search – even though he has no football background (yes, it was a half-Ashed decision). It was a bad fit from the start, and that’s on Hobbs. The problem now is the at Hobbs’ enormous ego and arrogance may preclude a return by Greg Schiano because it’s hard to see those two co-existing. Good thing Hobbs is a fundraiser, too, because Rutgers owes Ash a reported $8.47 million. Wonder how long the Rutgers administration will be able to live with a mistake that costly from its AD, especially since the next guy will cost even more and will have to dig out from a massive hole (yet again) created by Hobbs’ hire."
