With Tomasello coming back and Lee coming off red shirt, this weight is insanely stacked.

1 SR Nathan Tomasello Ohio State
2 SO Nick Suriano Rutgers
3 JR Ethan Lizak Minnesota
4 SO Nick Piccininni OK State
5 SR Darian Cruz Lehigh
6 FR Taylor LaMont Utah Valley
7 JR Sean Russell Edinboro
8 JR Sean Fausz NC State
9 FR Louie Hayes Virginia
10 SR Luke Welch Purdue
11 FR Drew Mattin Michigan
12 SO Jay Schwarm UNI
13 JR Ryan Millhof Arizona State
14 JR Jake Gromacki Clarion
15 JR Ronnie Bresser Oregon State
16 FR Sebastian Rivera Northwestern

I think there is a group slightly above the rest, who have an extremely realistic chance to be a NCAA Champion:

Tomasello
Suriano
Piccininni
Cruz
Lizak
Lee

However, the tier right below them aren't pushovers

Bresser
Rivera
Mattin

Where does Lee get ranked? I can't see how he can be ranked higher than 6, given his current resume at the collegiate level (right now). With this weight class, there will be some crazy match ups in the round of 16 and even better ones in the quarters.

Possible round of 16 matchups (With Lee as the 6th Seed)

Tomasello vs Gromacki
Russell vs Fausz
Cruz vs Millhof
Welchvs Lizak
Piccininni vs Mattin
Lee vs Bresser
LaMont vs Hayes
Suriano vs Schwarm

Possible Quarter Matchups

Tomasello vs Russell
Cruz vs Lizak
Piccininni vs Lee
LaMont vs Suriano

TLDR:

Whoever ends up below a 2 seed, will most likely face a hammer in the quarters.
  • As a 6th seed, your path to a championship could be something like [round of 32 opponent], Bresser, Piccininni, Tomasello/Suriano.
  • As a 5th seed, your path to a championship could be something like [round of 32 opponent], Welch, Cruz, Tomasello/Suriano, Tomasello/Suriano
  • As a 4th seed, your path to a championship could be something like [round of 32 opponent], Millhof, Lizak, Tomasello/Suriano, Tomasello/Suriano
  • As a 3rd seed, your path to a championship could be something like [round of 32 opponent], Mattin, Lee, Tomasello/Suriano, Tomasello/Suriano
  • As a 2nd seed, your path to a championship could be something like [round of 32 opponent], Schwarm, LaMont, Piccininni, Tomasello/Suriano.
  • As a 1 seed, your path to a championship could be something like [round of 32 opponent], Gromacki, Russell, Cruz, Tomasello/Suriano

At this point looking at his remaining matches hard to see Cruz losing a match. If he doesn’t he is the #1 seed.

Cruz/B10 Winner #1 or #2 Seed

Paths to Top Seed
Lee needs to beat Suriano and Tomasello
Suriano or Tomasello just needs to win B10

Lee's loss to Bresser will "Probably" come back to haunt him NCAA seeding wise. He is good enough to overcome this in the NCAA's. I actually hope he wrestles Tomasello BEFORE B10. That way Suriano has an easier path to #1 seed in B10 Tourney

You don't think RPI will come into play there? I mean really, who has he beaten?

I'm pretty sure the seeding committee for the NCAA National tourney uses their own seeding criteria, and the previous years finish is very high on the criteria list (Cruz won 125 last year).
I will try to find all their criteria for seeding since I'm home for the snowstorm today .

Previous year is not part of the seeding criteria.

Flowrestling podcast today talks about Suriano's performance at the Midlands, Ryan wrestling NATO at Maryland but not against Suriano, and the 125 weight class in general.: Hope it is available for all to hear.

Looking at the quality of depth at 125 and looking at 133 where there is a steep dropoff after Seth Gross, I wonder why NATO decided to go 133 instead of 133 where he wrestled last year ?

u mean 125 over 33? Think he wanted to go 33 but he went 25 to help the team fit in pletcher at 33

That is a good point. Is Seth Gross that unbeatable?

And like I said, Fausz literally dominated Piccininni. Fausz is like a Kevin Jack clone, just 16 pounds lighter. I don't know what quality wins Fausz has besides Piccininni, but he looks to be a legit title threat.

I did a quick look up, and I guess both Pletcher who was at 141 last season now is 133 and NATO who was 133 last season , now at 125 ,decided to cut down a weight class in order to win back the Team championship from Penn St.

I think NATO's only loss last year at 133 was to Cory Clark at the Nationals in the semi finals 7-4

Thanks Bill. Yes I gave my tickets to my friend’s son and his girl friend who is a Wisky grad

I think if someone from Big Ten goes undefeated and wins B1G tournament I think that tops Cruz for the Number 1. Odds are all B1G guys will have a loss IMO.

agreed, besides from Cruz's easy schedule he also has a unofficial loss to Piccinnini... whom also just lost to the nc state wrestler

I listened to the podcast on flo and they were debating whether guys like Rivera and Bresser are severely under-ranked prior to midlands. I think that is true. Bresser didnt even get taken down the whole tournament I believe and Rivera was aggressive against Suriano. Both I think were underrated going into Midlands and there is a smaller gap between the top tier guys and Bresser, Rivera, Fausz than most people thought.

I also admire Tomasello for dropping down to 125 to fit in Pletcher to lengthen their line up.
