Big 10 Tourney 2nd round game thread: RU-Northwestern

I wanted to get one game in tourney, just hope that they play hard in second half.

this is all we can ask for. realistically taking the homer glasses off, our fans should not have expected a win today. Just want to make sure we head into the offseason with good vibes and not memories of 30 point plus losses. Need to fight, even RU loses by 20 at least we will have fought

this was very similar to the Iowa game at the RAC where Iowa came in with a purpose and just blitzed us from the get go. Sometimes these games happen when you are playing a very good team. Its a NCAA team that came to play tonight with its A game and showing the country what they are made of. RU just never seem to have a chance...blitzed from the start, almost too passive

ask TCU played Oklahoma last night and then this afternoon went out and knocked off the #1 team in the country
Our game is totally about effort and hustle. That's what produces offensive rebounds. Not unreasonable to think that we can't match last night's energy against a better team that is rested and motivated.

Good point -- it's been 1 game. These kids are young. If they make the semis we can talk about tired legs. We tend to project our old man physical stamina onto these young athletes who are in peak physical shape.

I didn't see any quit from our team that half, even with nothing going our way. Let's see how they respond to start the 2nd half.

Getting it to 10 will be the magic # where Rutgers believes it can do it and the cats start to think twice. Need a strong 2nd half start

I see the psu trolls do not peruse the BB forums. They would have posted 10 new threads to fire the head coach already.

True, but a lot of our offensive rebounds are also due the the fact that we miss more shots than any team on the planet.

18 points.. they can do this.. come out and score the 1st 5-6 in the 2nd half and NW might just pucker up.

Its a reach.. but that 2nd half start could be the whole ballgame.

What an amazing story that would be.. surviving a 31-0 run to win a game.. and possibly knock NW out of the tourney.

You gotta have heart

that would make complete sense if RU played with some sort of effort, purpose, and energy. "we're playing for respect'...ok , go earn it 2nd half. Lose? well..ok. you dug yourselves the grand canyon. But fight back and represent...super. go home and hold heads high.

Agreed, 2nd half start will be key...Need a nice 6-0 run to get NW tight.

It's not the legs per se in these situations it's the combination of mental and physical. When things start to get away when you're a little tired you make lazy mental errors. The lazy pick, the lazy pass, the out of control drive, giving up the back door, not getting back etc. if you have some success different story. But to have success in these situations helps to have some ballers.

For all the peeps who are using the tired legs excuse why did u pick them to win?
I didn't. I thought we'd lose by 18 because we'd be tired, mentally and physically. We don't have the depth or maturity to keep up the pace of a conference tourney yet.

And for those who think playing a game last night when the other team didn't wouldn't make a difference, care to redefine physics and biology for us? You just sound like douches.

yeah but its tough to blame being tired on the first 7-8 minutes of the game...its one thing in the 2nd half. I just think they were unprepared for Northwestern to bring the haymaker tonight

Agree, however, sometime you just don't get your legs back right away and it can be a mental thing, too, which is what we saw during that run IMHO. We were simply getting beat ALL over the floor abs it wasn't even close. Those 3 straight stops, Johnson's 3, and BAMM we suddenly have life again.

And give credit where credit is due they shut the freaking lights out of the basket during that run!

Hope for the best in the 2nd I guess!

At this point come strong out of the blocks. Try and cut it in half by the 10 minute mark and then go from there.
There's still achance with team as they never give up. Last year this is a 40 point loss.

Get a couple easy baskets at the start of the half. Get it to 10 points at the under 12 timeout.....dammit why do I do this to myself

Coach P is going to get RU pissed off and riled off to start the 2nd half ... Time for the best RU comeback in history.

This is the perfect example of why you need a consistent shooter or two just to stop the other teams run. We always hit a cold spell at some point, but now the other team is to the other extreme. Can't afford to have so many empty trips with the way we play the game.
Maybe they come out cold and put a few points up to make it a game.

Chris Collins is not about to take his foot off the gas in the second half.

I hope that we can settle down and run our offense more effectively the rest of the way.

It looked to me like our team panicked on the offensive end when the NW run got going.

Ive seen teams come out and play great on day 2 because they have a game under them and the other team doesnt and is tight...gave you the TCU example. Sometimes it goes one way, sometimes another but I just think we shouldnt fall back on it....every team has to play back to back nights at some point. What I didnt like is we were shellshocked...its one thing 16-0 but 31-0 run is almost unheard of, I just dont like excuses trying to defend it...it is what it is

Has every single instance of jostling for position away from the ball been called in favor of NW?

and he shouldnt...the lead is down to 16. Key for Northwestern isnt maybe about pouring it on, its about playing smart....taking the right shots, they are not going to hit all their 3s like they did

okay you can only use that excuse so much. RU allowed a 20-0 in the first 8 minutes, its not like this blowout happened in the 2nd half.

its an excuse, yes you can be tired but geez TCU played yesterday and went and beat Kansas, do not make it okay that they gave up a 31-0 run which it sounds like you are doing
Fans need to focus on what is needed to improve the team instead of looking for lame excuses such as tired legs.
