Cam Spencer

Cam Spencer right now is taking Issa 3s. I need some volume. NEVER pass up a mildly contested shot late in the shot clock. Geo and Ron would never pass to Mag with 3 seconds left when there was a reasonable shot to be had.
Many on this board would not remember or know about him, but the "Big Whistle" Bill Chadwick used to yell while working color on NY Ranger games on tv for Barry Beck to shoot the puck.

Beck was an excellent defenseman who was reluctant to shoot the puck as the point on Rangers' power plays. Chadwick would constantly be yelling, "SHOOT THE PUCK BARRY!"

We need Cam to shoot much more often. If he has a reasonable shot at all, he should shoot the ball!!

Best of Luck,
Groz

Remember Chadwick well. Seemed like him and Jim Gordon did the Ranger games forever.
Gordon was always looking for a penalty.
"Gilbert crosses the blue line. Tripped....no call."

Watching Ranger games on Sunday evenings with Bill Chadwick and Jim Gordon made the end of the weekend more bearable back in the day. My favorite Chadwick quote came when Vadnais was playing for the Bruins: "If you wait long enough, Vadnais will give you the puck!"

Only points we scored in end game were Spencer and Spencer assist. He had a nice game against OSU.

He was not the issue today. Ill advised Caleb three from way too far out, Caleb losing ball out of bounds, Caleb missing crucial free throw again in crunch time. Crucial errors.

Paul’s turnovers were freshmen mistakes. Why is he going to the baseline and not top of the key? Please introduce yourself to Cam because it sure looks like Paul is playing favorites to players who aren’t open.

Cliff is turning into Myles with bad fouls away from the basket.

Hyatt deserves ball more.
Yes, yes, yes & yes.

Absolutely. Was going to post the same. Then get good at setting screens for your best shooter.

I've said it before.

Sorry Cam - it's going to suck for you but you need to be running 10 miles a game.
Constantly moving off ball, running around double/triple screens trying to get open.
He needs to be vintage Klay Thompson - more shots than actual dribbles of the ball.

Basically HC Pike needs to watch a Richard Hamilton highlight video and just do that.

How do you run around screens when they are not set? However, I wholeheartedly agree that Cam must be in constant motion in an effort to shed his man through traffic or otherwise create space for him to hoist shots. Pickell will be of no help by scheming for him, so Cam will need to figure this out himself. He must have or develop a selfish scorer's mentality and keep on shooting until the rim bends or the shots go in.

As an aside, and I have advocated this repeatedly, Simpson needs to play more regardless of turnovers because he can score; need to build his confidence and him not be afraid of being pulled the minute he turns the ball over. Wolf also has shown an aptitude to score and should get more minutes. Unfortunately, these two may not get the opportunities until, if, or when we no longer have hope of making the Tournament.

I don't think it's the lack of screens or movement, it's the inability to get where they need to do with the ball vs pressure and timing and the defense's ability to help out off guys they know can't/won't shoot.

If you have Paul/Caleb/Cam/Mag/Cliff out there, you have:
ONE guy the other team doesn't want shooting 3's
Zero guys who can take guys off the dribble
Two guys who are good passers/decision makers
Two guys you pretty much never want dribbling the ball
Subbing Hyatt for Mag gives you another shooter
Simpson is the X factor if his decision-making and defense improve (and Chol but prob a year away).

And even with all that, we're 35ish team.

Agreed on SImpson, live with his mistakes for now, make them teachable moments, but get him on the floor for 15-20 mins/game. Nobody else on the team has the potential to give you what he can, even if he might not be ready yet.

I think this might be a "be careful what you wish for" situation with Simpson. I love his potential, but I can remember at least 3 situations over the past 2 games where he straight up let his guy drive past him to an easy bucket. Pike is not gonna let that fly.

I know what you mean and that has to be corrected, I think that can be done AND get him 15-20 minutes.
He's not going to take minutes from Cliff/Reiber but the rest of the rotation gives Pike enough positional flexibility to play Simpson with a bunch of different combinations and take minutes from anyone else in the rotation.

Okay but said this in another thread. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. If Derek turns the ball over and the other teams point guards goes by him and scores or dishes for a corner three because someone had to pick up his man, you take him out. But you do not bury him. You have Brandon or Hobbs talk to him and explain his issues and put him back in 4 minutes later.
Now I never could stand the John Thompson Georgetown substitution pattern literally taking everybody out in 1 minute and back 1-2 minutes later as he broke records for substitutions , but Pike sometimes buries guys too long and he cannot do that with Derek. He should be getting at least 5 minutes per half and if he is having a good game he gets more. I would have subbed him out for Paul , Caleb or Cam as letting them play 37,34,and 33 minutes with their scoring 6 , 8 and 4 points was a losing formula.

As far as Cam goes , he has to shoot more even if covered and stop hestitating and just let it fly. I cannot say any of his 5 misses from 3 were highly contested and frustrated and shocked none went down but he is a shooter. He has to get volume up. I agree with others that he has to be screened for more but I would even do pick and roll or rather pick and pop with Paul besides when Paul is doing high ball screen with Cliff. His shooting % will improve and he cannot be at 16% against the top 5 opponents we have played. Even one more 3 made probably beats Temple and Miami. He had to continue to increase his attempts. Even if he goes 3-10 that 3 made threes on a team that does not rely on the 3 in their offense.

Wisconsin, Iowa & Purdue use the picket fences all the time ..
They continually recruit player(s) to hit the dagger 3s.
This needs to be incorporated into the offense, even if sporadically..
You see cam every warmup going around the world & back, hardly ever missing..

I feared he’d be a Kiss 2.0, and while he is playing better than kiss was against P5 competition he’s still struggling with this level of physicality and speed. Still, he’s a net positive for now.
