Does anyone know how they pick the voters for the College Football Coaches Poll? A fair one that represents a proper balance of conferences/schools?

Are you suggesting there's a bias in the poll?

What happens if we distribute the non-P5s among geographic regions (I did not do it.. but another idea is to see these coaches' origins.. what major teams they have connections to.. played for, coached at, born near)

There can be quibbles as to who belongs where... but however you look at it.. it is SOUTH heavy. And here's one possible issue.. where these schools are probably determines what P5s they visit for payday games most often.. and then. maybe, there's an incentive to vote that the team that thumped you deserves a high rank compared to a team you haven't seen. or, conversely, consider if Howard's coach had a vote.. even if he thought we were Top 25.. would he vote it after feeling disrespected?

East

I like your regional list, and you make some very good points.
And yes, the South is very well represented in the total of 55.

Giving the coaches a vote is the dumbest thing ever. These guys don’t have the time to follow what’s going on with any team outside their schedule. I’d be absolutely shocked if it wasn’t anyone other than coaches grad assistants submitting those votes.

Get rid of it.

And honestly the AP vote is a beauty pageant as well. AP vote should be 1 of a few factors that go into the offical ranking of a team. Some sort of weighted formula which includes things like efficiency rankings , strength of schedule , NET style points for wins, etc.

This is an intern's job, paperwork to get off someone's desk. The actual coaches don't vote.

To answer the question - it’s a random draw each year.

“The panel is chosen by random draw, conference by conference plus independents, from a pool of coaches who have indicated to the American Football Coaches Association their willingness to participate. Each coach submits a Top 25 with a first-place vote worth 25 points, second place 24, and so on down to one point for 25th.”

This poll has no impact on the college season. The playoff committee will begin ranking the teams in Nov.
The playoff committee has to get their info somewhere. You think that none of them ever come across the coaches' poll or any other non-official source upon which they form their own personal opinions?
