Email Hobbs and Baumgartner regarding Battle of the Bronx

..if you are pissed off about playing at Yankee Stadium.

Sent an email to both Hobbs and Baumgartner this afternoon expressing my disgust with the Yankee Stadium Game. Hobbs did not reply, Baumgartner responded within the hour.

Title of this thread should be "How to waste 5 minutes of your life that you'll never get back." With all the problems we have as a program, a game in New York City should be at the very bottom of the list. Some total clowns on this board!

Great attitude. Anybody who doesn't share your opinion is a clown. Some real jerks we have posting on this board.

how ironic
Find me one post anywhere on this board where I call someone a clown or otherwise denigrate an entire group of people for their opinions. Good luck with that.

When you're done failing to find something that isn't there, then spend a little time reading up on the definition of "irony."

Actually, if you go back and read what I wrote about Trump supporters on the CE board, you'll find that it was based on polling at the time. I was paraphrasing the actual demographics. Admittedly, I was pushing the envelope at the time.

I've said, and will continue to say, lots of bad things about Trump himself. But with only a few exceptions over the years, I don't denigrate groups of people for their opinions. For instance, you will not find anywhere on this board's history (or anywhere else) me saying anything negative about either Liberals or Conservatives. Hell, other than Trump, you won't even find me saying negative things about presidents of either party very often.

I get people are bitching. I understand not wanting to go. However, the idea people are going to drop their season tickets over this is dumb. That being said, I don't think it's a good look to have an empty stadium. For anyone who likes planning events I have a proposal. We have what? 20,000-25,000 season ticket holders. By a rough estimate the NYPD and NYFD have a combined 50,000 members. Maybe those of us who don't want to go can donate our tickets to these brave men, women, and their families? School looks good, we feel good, their kids have an experience, and we don't have to physically go. Some suggestions @MrsScrew @bori_blanco @e5fdny

How many NYPD and NYFD members are Rutgers or Maryland graduates ? I agree it would be a good idea to donate to the RU graduates in NYPD and NYFD, but I doubt the others would have any interest in the game. I guess they could make a few dollars scalping them, so maybe still a good idea.

Because none of them have kids who might just want to go to a football game?

I think you made a great point with that question and I'll add, bet a lot of the NYPD & NYFD members are college football fans and might like to see the RU-MD game, especially if RU fans planing to stay home donated the tickets.
Might even help RU gain a bigger fanbase in NYC.

fair enough but you did lump some of the posters with that

Got a reply back from Baumgartner. It was very understanding and respectful, and confirmed that this had been set up before the current AD was in place. Also asked for input on how to make this more enjoyable for the fan base, and suggestions for how to get students involved in going(I am a student and mentioned it in my email). Wasn't actually expecting a response, but am pleased to note that it was very professional.

After four games there the only way to make it enjoyable is to move it back on campus...

What's amazing is how much some in this fan base is crying about it. No one is asking you to go to Afghanistan. It's Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. No one is forcing anyone to go. Hopefully it is part of the season ticket package so we can really see every one cry on here.
The venue is not particularly accessible for the older fan base. Difficult to get there in terms of driving for older people. Public transportation mean a lot a walking that is also a challenge for older fans.

Spoke to Sarah on the phone yesterday regarding my email. To summarize: She was sincere and as genuine as can be. She thanked me again and again for voicing my concerns and made it clear that she wants to hear feedback on everything and anything to quote " that is how we will grow and get better as a program." She wanted to hear my concerns regarding the game at Yankee Stadium. I brought up the loss of a home game, the lack of college atmosphere (tailgating etc), the commute for some, the ticket distribution and the playing surface. She said she has receive many emails and phone calls with similar concerns and understands 100%. She mentioned she commuted to Yankee Stadium from central jersey and knows how frustrating it can be.

She went on to say that the deal was made some time ago and they are dedicated to trying anything and everything to get fans into the seats. It was obvious to me that the admin are not very happy with the game either but according to her "the horse has left the gate." She mentioned that they added the wrestling and are actively seeking ideas and trying to brainstorm more ways to make it as much of an RU home crowd as possible.

She also said the athletic dept is trying to be very transparent and want to hear from the fans as much as possible. She said an email will be going out early next week to anyone who sent a letter about the game that will clarify some of the questions.

All in all, I was VERY impressed that she sought to speak with me on the phone. She kept emphasizing fan feedback and basically made me realize that if you are a Rutgers fan you HAVE TO GO to this game. Yes it sucks, yes it's inconvenient, but the last thing we want is for this to be a Maryland home game, protesting this game is not going to accomplish anything positive for our school. This is a done deal (for whatever reason) and fans who don't go are just going to be spiting themselves and Rutgers.

Here is the email I received last night:

Hi xxxxxxx,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your feedback in regards to our wrestling/football double header at Yankee Stadium. I also want to thank you for your support of Rutgers Football through your season ticket purchase. You are critically important to our program's success.

The football game against Maryland at Yankee Stadium was agreed upon in principle over a year ago. We tried to improve the overall experience for our fans by bringing the wrestling match to Yankee Stadium. The overall exposure gained for both programs through this one of a kind event is very exciting; however, we also understand that taking a home game away from campus is challenging for some of our most loyal season ticket holders.

As with any new program or initiative, we will evaluate what we did well, what we can do better, and how we can continue to add value to the season ticket holder experience. This event at Yankee Stadium is no different; we are not only going to work as hard as we can to create a really memorable and unique experience for 2017, but we will evaluate every aspect before we make any decisions about future games.

Again, thank you for your support. We will need you in Yankee Stadium on Nov 4, 2017 to cheer on our wrestling and football teams. You are the difference!

All my best,
Sarah

PS. As I shared above, we want you to attend the game and support our student-athletes on November 4, 2017. But if you are unable to make it, TixCity (link pasted below) is the exclusive secondary ticket partner for Rutgers Athletics and we are confident there will be a robust secondary market for this game.

I had asked her & AD Hobbs to give the season ticket holders an opt out to purchase this home game. This is the response above. If she is so confident that there will be a robust secondary market for this game, then give us the opt out, and let RU sell the game at a higher price than what we pay.

I think we all received the same email, just changing the name up top......

That would be expected, of course...... You have to hope they keep a tally on this

If anybody gets Sarah on the phone, that probably registers better.

"I'm basically allowed one major institutional partnership and Rutgers is the school that we wanted to have a partnership with,'' said Mark Holtzman, the executive director of non-baseball revenue for the Yankees. "Pat and his team, I think, saw the value in that.''

Not Syracuse. Not Notre Dame. Not (stifled laugh) UConn.
We want to be the NY metro home of CFB we need to act like it.

Try spelling the guys name correctly.

This game is scheduled because Julie was an incompetent idiot
Didn't she look at the full schedule before agreeing to this?
2017 home schedule SUCKS 4 home games in September
and at least three will be at noon, maybe all four!!!!!
3rd weekend in October vs. Purdue.... probably a Homecoming noon start
the next week Nov 4th vs. Maryland you move to the Bronx?????
Nov 25th Michigan State

so in Oct only 1 game at HPSS
and in Nov only 1 game at HPSS
Julie is an idiot
You wonder why we can't sell more tickets?

And a robust secondary market for tickets? Yeah, you might be able
to get $10 for your $100 tickets

How has this thread reached five pages? Teams all over the country are playing neutral site games. Can't believe some RU "fans" have so much time to waste. The game isn't being moved.

I'm not generally a fan of going to any game at Yankee Stadium. Hell, Lewis And Clark had an easier time reaching the Pacific. Even a boat ride from the Seaport seems long and cold even with beer. But....if I'm gonna email Hobbs about this, I'd suggest a lot of fast, booze laden boats from NJ, even from Monmouth County to Yankee Stadium or a couple of reserved Amtrak party trains from at least Trenton to NYC. I would suggest that for UMD fans in the DMV, the B1G should reserve an Amtrak party train to from DC or New Carrollton or Baltimore to NYC.

Gotta leave one ceremonial can of beer for Hobbs.

Honestly, I don't really care if it's moved - I just don't want it included in the season ticket package. Let there be an option in the season ticket package - Option A: HPSS games only, Option B: HPSS games and Yankee Stadium game

Really don't want to have to pay for "home" games at a neutral stadium that I'm not going to attend.

I'm guessing that most NFL season ticket holders don't want pre-season games, and I certainly don't want the Home Shopping Network or Lifetime in the cable package I buy.

well actually if you are on the round table there is a thread about possiby one home game a year at Yankee Stadium and a quote by Mr Hobbs that is very disturbing that RU and Yankee Stadiu are looking to expand their partnership

so you can pile on Julie but Delaney is the one calling the shots and it wont be a one time thing

You're not getting it. The fact that's it's a neutral site is the last of the negatives.

Are you a season ticket holder? And if so, where do you live (roughly)?

At least the preseason games are at the same stadium. When the Bills had preseason games in Toronto, they didn't include them as part of the season ticket package. And if I had to drive down the block to watch the HSN or Lifetime instead of getting them on the TV in my living room, I'd be ticked if I was charged for them as part of my cable package, too.

In my case, the walk from my fridge to my sofa is exactly the same whether we play home games in Piscataway or the Bronx. I suppose it's unfair of me not to have more empathy for long-time, in-person supporters of the Scarlet Knights being inconvenienced by the event, but these are some of the "fees" that come with being a second-tier program. Even from across the country, I'd rather see 100% of our home games at home -- I don't immediately see the value in this partnership -- but all indications are that this won't be the last time this happen.

If I still lived in Somerset County, I'd be planning on spending a Saturday night at the Mark or the Carlyle next November, and taking a ride on the 4 train.

For me in particular, I live about 25 minute drive from the stadium, so it's an easy drive there and back.

The trip to Yankee Stadium for me by car is about an hour and fifteen without accounting for traffic. If I take the train, it's 25 min drive to the NB train station, then 50+ minutes into NY Penn, then another 20+ min to catch a subway train up to Yankee Stadium... so, about the same as the drive would be with traffic (but more expensive because two round-trip NJ transit tickets cost $56). Would also need to pay for parking either at Yankee Stadium or at the train station, neither of which would be included with the season parking pass.

Staying in the city the night before just adds even more cost, just to ease the travel to the game on the day (but requires longer coverage for the kids, too).

All together, it'd take an extra 2.5+ hours of travel to get to and from the game, and an extra $100 in cost that would not be going to Rutgers. And for what? The pleasure of a terrible fan experience at the stadium itself, where seating is in no way set up to watch a football game and concessions cost an arm and a leg.

Games at Yankee Stadium are a novelty... I've done it twice, so the novelty has faded.

Yes, I saw this quote.

But it still does not answer the my question in bold above...I already know what what the "perceived" gain is, what happens if we say no?

Not a Rutgers or Maryland person but fan reactions like this thread are puzzling and seem to be a small part of what holds back your brand and growth IMO.
I think many other objective observers would have a similar puzzlement. Some of us are still on a little learning curve on being fans of a top echelon program.

Many other objective observers are wondering if this is so important to the B1G and the brand, why is RU giving up a home game and our closest rival Maryland is not?

Not a Rutgers or Maryland person but fan reactions like this thread are puzzling and seem to be a small part of what holds back your brand and growth IMO. That's because you don't get it.

This isn't about the fan experience so much as the notoriety the school and football program receives. You do realize we have been there already, right? 3x

As previously mentioned what other attention would a home or away Rutgers vs. Maryland game game nationally? The same as this one will.

I guess in my opinion as an outsider you guys are thinking small time and frankly a little bit selfishly about this. Embrace it and run with this sucker. See above...been there, done that. And we're not thinking small time. But this idea certainly is...something an AAC or dying Big East-era team would do.

sure Yankee Stadium isn't ideal for watching a game and you can't sit with all your buddies like you do at home games but that's pretty short-sighted in my opinion. Again, you're not getting it. But that's okay. I don't think a lot of outsiders would.

I think many more objective observers would wonder why you're moving a HOME CONFERENCE game off campus before they would even consider the "brand" thing.
