Right now we have named tropical systems in both the Atlantic and Pacific Basins in January - such systems are rare, but not unprecedented in each basin in January, but this is the first year both basins have had named systems in January of the same year.
Alex is a subtropical system that was just upgraded from a TS to a hurricane with 85 mph winds and is south of the Azores and will head up through the Azores (where hurricane warnings are now up) towards Greenland, quickly transitioning to a non-tropical (cold core) system.
And Pali was the earliest hurricane ever seen in the Pacific Basin - made it to Cat 2 (well SW of Hawaii) before dissipating to an depression over the past couple of days. The end is nigh...
