Football INSTANT REACTION: Rutgers defeats Miami 31-24 in Pinstripe Bowl

The only positive in his play today was no turnovers. Other than that he wasn't a factor. I haven't commented all year on his QB play but it is amazing we won 7 games without a threat at quarterback.
So while we are on that subject let’s consider several things . I have been a longtime fan of Rutgers.I have been a season ticket holder in basketball and football some 43 years. . I am a proud alum. I also believe you as former player would give a fair assessment of players and coaches. I didn’t think your posting today was anything close to being objective. Immediately you instead of showing pride knocked this QB. Now saying you haven’t commented all year. I assume you not only played here but received a degree from Rutgers. My gripe is if you and others feel this way give Greg a call and tell him.I doubt you have or ever would. Gavin Wimsatt helped us to a win… sometimes things take a little longer. Our D is becoming better and better… special teams are just that SPECIAL ... the O line has certainly developed …the runnng back position is pretty ok too.Kirk only called 15 pass plays … Gavin hit on 7 … Rutgers fans would like those 300 + plus passing games 3-4 TD’s … would not rule that out yet for next season. Gavin’s issue is he get’s over hyped when looking to hit his receiver …..his tendency is to release the ball slightly high. He made some very good throws with touch today… he also will have a pretty decent group of receivers next season. We won today against a still good opponent. We got hosed on several calls and made some dumb penalties … Lewis needs to move inside … add 10-15 lbs… his face mask grabs Inbelieve due to being just a tad behind in pursuit .Keep in mind I love this guy. Yes we could have a special year in 2024.

He did what they asked because he’s not capable of more. A QB who is will add a much needed dimension. The rest of the team deserves that. They’ve put themselves in too good of a position to have such poor play at one spot.

We win because of the OL and Monongai. Throw a capable QB in the mix and it’s a different game on O
I usually agree with you but in this case I think you are wrong.

We win in spite of Gavin. He doesn’t even run anymore.
Next year could be 2006 all over if we have even half decent QB play.
How many more yards would Kyle and Sam have if we had a real threat at QB?
Another month of practice and he didn’t improve.

Quite the dumb statement as usual. How many rushes did KM and SB have? Add in the few that Gavin did have. He doesn’t have to run … we have a running back room which is stocked pretty well .He had the gameplay and handled it well . Only had 8 actual practices … Gavin will be the QB…

Agree 100%

Threw 13 INTs that year. Not saying I don’t like Mike Teel, just saying that I think Wimsatt needs a chance to keep developing.
I agree that GW needs more time to develop but in college football in 2023 you don’t actually have to develop a QB because of the portal. is there a QB in the portal ready to go right now? It’s a different path forward that might be beneficial for the team.

Mostly correct. He’s not a remotely capable QB and it says a lot about the other players, and yes the coaching to win as much as they do with this anchor. I pray Schiano moves on from GW today but I don’t think he will. He’s enamored with this kid type of game we saw yesterday. Defense, ST score and ground game. The receivers are only there to keep DBs lined up away from the ball.

But, players don’t improve over a three week period. Monangai didn’t improve. Dixon didn’t improve. That’s not how it works.

big win and F all their stupid obnoxious fans. Those mother f’ers were even at Billy’s for some dumb reason. And some were on the RU side 🤷‍♂️ being dicks.
likey Jersey fans of Miami who repeat all the nonsense about how their tax dollars get wasted on RU football. Had someone this week mention the helicopter.. "they gave him (Schiano) a $5M house and helicopter". And this was someone who is not even a fan of college football.. just a Jersey resident.. who "heard" this was true.

It's funny how when the season first started most RU fans were hoping Brown would be ready to go for the season opener and were disappointed when Monangai started. That feeling changed very quickly
What's weird is the sequence:

2021: Monangai.. averages 3.8 per rush and looks good compared to everyone else what got (team average was 3.6)
2022: KM averages 4.1 , Brown 4.3.. team 3.6 (So people more excited about Brown)
2023: KM avg 5.2 Brown 3.6 (only had B10 games and this bowl) team 4.2 avg (**Aaron Young averaged 5.9 on only 16 carries)

IMOI, it's not "funny" or even unusually that people wanted to see what a healthy Brown could do.. he seemed to outplay KM last year when both were healthy.. but maybe, just maybe, that competition made KM step up his offseason game and turned him into the monster back we saw this season. Then again, the whole OL deserves a lot of credit because that jump from 3.6ypc to 4.2ypc had a lot to do with them as well.

Whole offense gets a kudos and hope they take that into this offseason looking to improve that much again. All they need do is pass more efficiently and they won't have to run into stacked boxes all teh time.

Monangai needs the well deserved rest so he can come back next year even stronger. He carried the offensive load this year. Team MVP IMO.

Let's get a little more variety on the offense to complement him next year. It starts with an improved passing game. Whatever it takes to improve that, get it done.
You will see some new wrinkles next year and more use of other players. Getting 7 wins in the big East with the offense we had is a miracle . We did not have a complete offensive roster obviously and we game planned the way we had to in order to win that many games. If we chose to abandon that and try to be someone we are not we would have been blown out a lot and maybe won 3 to 4 games

Would this year's team (or, this year's bowl team) have beaten Wake Forest in the Gator Bowl, from a couple of years ago?

Coaching was good enough to go bowling and win.
As for Gavin, expect improvement because expecting anything else is not what true fans should be doing when talking about players on the team they are claiming to be fans of.
Some players develop their talent slower than others , Wimsatt might be that way and in 2024 will finally put it together
There’s good game coaches, there’s good recruiters, there’s good talent developers. Some coaches can do two. Some can do all. Just because we made a bowl doesn’t mean the staff is good at development. All I’m trying to say is those not happy with GW can’t lay the blame just on GW. I’m with you, I hope he really shines next year because I think we’re lucky to have him.

Can’t you enter the Transfer Portal?

Something I’ve been wondering about. GW had 15 passes and it makes sense as we ate up clock just running the ball.
What had me wondering is, how did Rice have 2k yards running in 2007 and somehow we were still able to throw the ball like crazy too.

Having a Britt, Underwood and Brown as offensive weapons along with Brock sure does help a passing attack. That team gobbled up a ton of yds between the 20s and Greg constantly settled on FG attempts by Ito.

They averaged 4 TDs per game and 2 FGs. Doesn't sound like settling.
In losses to MD, Cinncy, WV, UConn and Lville there was a lot of settling for fgs and/or conservative playcalling inside the red zone.. Plus Ito was doing kickoffs, Punts and fgs. He was overworked.

A kicker being overworked! They kick far more times during practice or even warmups than spaced over a 3 hour game.

A lot of the offensive stats that year were accumulated against Buffalo, Navy, Norfolk State, 2-10 cuse, 6-6 Louisville and an overmatched Ball State team in the International Bowl. The offense probably had its best overall game of the year vs. USF in terms of 'production/opponent difficulty' ratio.

Yeah- understand all that but my question is more of- how did RR’s 2000 yards not eat every bit of clock? And still have enough time for Teel to also have so much production. Ray pretty much averaged what KM did in the bowl and there was only enough time available to only throw 15 times.

Didn't the clock rules change a couple of years ago to speed up the game? I remember reading that coaches were complaining about running fewer plays.

Part of that was likely more 'chunk yards/explosive' plays in '07.

Greg relied on him too much. Ito was the Jack of trades but the master of none. Look at the three specialists we have now (Patel, Appleby and by McCatmney), all are better than Ito in each specialty. My point is that Greg in 2007 relied too much on Ito’s foot when we could have been more aggressive in play calling when RU had so many offensive weapons.

Even worse that the prior year we had Radigan who was an all world punter..,
