Karl Hobbs to expected to take lead Georgia Tech Job

Talent puts the ball in the basket. No arguements here. It is the other half of the court that has put Rutgers on the map.

Hopefully we will find out what happens there.

Inflection point? That team lost the play in game. It’s not like they went on to make the Elite 8. Throwing 5 good defenders out there and expecting Sweet 16’s has proven difficult for us so far. Einstein would likely suggest bringing in All Americans as a reasonable change in strategy.
Worked for San Diego State and Tennessee and we were well on our way this year.

The middle 2 months of the year actually happened. We were actually one of the best teams in the country. We were actually a team capable of winning the National Championship.

Those 2 months were not make believe.

#1 I don't really know who he is so i don't have an opinion
#2 This doesnt change the fact that we already have a guy who is the right hand man. What happens if/when he comes?
1) If you don’t know who Brett is, quite honestly, very hard to take you seriously as both a Scarlet Knight fan and a college basketball fan. Wow.

2) bringing Brett along would have zero to do with Brandin Knight. There are steps all over the nation who have multiple assistant coaches on their level. This is so silly. I can’t even begin to understand where you’re coming from at this point.

1. That is really silly. I don’t know Ruthers basketball because I don’t know who someone who was an assistant coach is? I can’t be a college basketball fan either.

2. So you think it is OK to have 3 guys on the court yelling instructions to players? I sit directly across from the bench and I have a pretty good feel on the dynamics. Knight has Pikes ear. He is the guy that Pike listens to. I don’t think there can be 2 of these guys. Not understanding it is silly. Disagree, fine.

You also had this everyone is wrong and stupid feeling when people debated you we could have work to do BEFORE the Michigan game!

I don’t know basketball because I don’t know who a career assistant at an Ivy League school is? A guy that happened to be a manager of The Rutgers team.

If Myles doesn’t get hurt in the 1st game he makes the dunk and we were in Sweet 16 with a favored game to make the Elite 8.

This is fact and not make believe.

So what I have heard you say in this thread is…

1. If Caleb played 32 minutes vs Lafayette we would have won.
2. If Mag doesn’t go down we could have won the national championship this year. And I absolutely love Mag o I’m not ripping him at all.
3. If Myles didn’t get hurt against Clemson we are in the Sweet 16 and likey Elite 8.

You are borderline RutgersAl with your “what ifs” that support your argument, but seem rather pessimistic about what life might look like with NBA players on our roster.

What if Ace loses his man on a pick and roll a couple of time but also drops 28 on the other end?

There's this too: His father is the football chief of staff

1. Probably, but not as confident as 2 and 3
2. Absolutely. Were we not a 4 or 5 seed projected. I am the antithesis of RutgersAl and I was saying it
3. Absolutely. Myles dunks it was game over. Myles was hurt and almost didn’t play. I am convinced he dunks that ball if healthy

So a guy we want to push Knight a seat away from the head coach?

This guy has been a lifer as an assistant coach in the Ivy League. Brandon Knight is going to a head coach somewhere soon and a very valuable member of the staff.

If this was fantasy baseball bring him on board and put him in the utility spot

Ton of truth here. In the past 2 years here there has been one constant in how we break slumps.
Simpson and Wolf could’ve played more against the cupcakes this year. The games were not close. To this day I don’t understand why those games were so close. We had RHJ and Cliff. That should’ve been more than enough against Lehigh, Lafayette, etc. We should’ve been able to win those games easily even with horrendous half court defense.

Seemed to be a mindset we were giving 25 kenpom points to the opponent and had to get them back. That explains the Simpson and Wolf. I think Pike kind of learned from the previous year and really made sure we were on it on the defensive side.

Looking back at the Lafayette game I remember Ron being in a complete funk and just going through the motions. Don't know if he was completely healthy, but he just had a blank stare almost the entire game and he gave little effort.

The Lafayette game the offense was beyond horrendous
16/56 overall 4/26 from 3, 15/23 from the line
They were 19/46, 7/18 and 8/11 with 20 turnovers
We had 6 blocked shots too
I can't find the shot quality tweet but it was something like we had a 99.8% chance of winning that game based on shot quality.
Unforgettable

I can't believe there are people who don't think we win that NCAA game if Myles make that dunk. That might have been the biggest momentum switch in the history of Rutgers basketball.

I've said before that I thought we could have been a final 4 team too if Mag had stayed healthy. However, our peak was around the Purdue game. We were starting to have some big offensive struggles before Mag got hurt and I was rolling back the idea based on our performance. Once Mag was done, that just put a fork in us.

1) Brett is considered on of the top young offensive minds in college basketball so, yes, I would think someone who comes off like he is soooooo knowledgeable about the game would be well aware of who he is. Also, as others have noted, his dad has been involved with RU Athletics the better part of the last 40 years so I would have thought you'd have likely met him in the past (being that you're apparently close to the athletic department).

2) I think MOST here would agree that brining him onto the staff is a) a "no-brainer" and b) not going to cause problems. He won't need to be sitting next to Pike's and "in his ear." AGAIN - most of the top staffs in the nation have multiple coaches with credentials as good if not better so what's the problem?

It was more that there were probably 10 opportunities to make a play to win that Houston game down the stretch and none were made. Myles also completely missed hitting that player on the ground with the ball out of bounds. I still can’t get myself to rewatch that game and likely never will.

As for this year’s team. They were peaking when Mag went down but we would need to go on an offensive heater to make the Final Four. Defense alone was not going to do it. That’s four games against very good competition. We did that the season before in the regular season but no one would suggest that’s a regular occurrence. It was historic.

Apparently the other 360 D1 schools don't know who he is either because he has been an assistant coach in the Ivy league since 2012!

I also didn't know who he was in 2011 when he was the assistant coach at Holy Family in 2011 and in 2008 when he was an assistant at Delaware Valley College.

If he truly is a up and coming coach and Knight stays here then he is coming as the 3rd in command. I assumed incorrectly that this guy had a resume and was actually a hot commodity. Didn't realize he was stuck at Princeton for 12 years.

This is where we disagree. This year showed you didn't have to be an elite offensive team to make the finals. We were capable of having a decent offensive game along with our D. You don't have to be an elite offensive team to have an elite offensive game.

To be fair I was concerned about the minutes we were playing and although we were playing like a Top 10 team I did have concerns that we wouldn't be fresh when the games mattered. So I had conflicted thoughts and I hoped that down the stretch with a bid in hand Pike might start using his bench.

12,13,1,6, and 9. That’s the route SDSU took to the Finals. I think most would admit that’s a pretty atypical path. And yes, while beating Alabama, which is a wonderful achievement, they were fortunate that Alabama hit 3 of 27 three-point shots. I don’t care how good your defense is there’s some good fortune there.

My point is not to take anything away from SDSU, but instead, to suggest that, I don’t think too many head coaches are going to change their recruiting philosophy in order to mirror San Diego states success this year.

I think that was what Pike did to her where we are at. Most people think (including you) now that we have gotten to this level we need to go one step further and actually get talent. I am in the minority in that I belief it isn’t that easy.

Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey are playing college basketball because they have to. They are being forced.

It isn't primadonna it is about their professional careers. If pike plays them 15-20 MPG because they don't meet the program's standard for defense and effort it becomes a direct knock on their draft stock.

We are on the map because of defense and effort. Whenever we have been in a slump the solution or fix has always been focusing on D and often times reducing the role of certain players in the rotation.

Can Pike really take a 5 star guy and play them 15 MPG? Potentially take millions out of a 18 year old kids pocket?

Watch Dylan Harper play in a HS game....it defintely doesn't meet the defensive standards we have here. It defintely would fit Oregon or Kansas State.

I would not watch 1 second of HS basketball games to determine if someone can play defense. Cam Spencer and Paul Mulcahy are 2 players who are not strong defenders and are coached into understanding defense.....Caleb McConnell had 3 surgeries in his 5 year RU career and won the defensive player of the year, over significantly better athletes across the country. Your worries about defense, should be the last thing to look for or worry about.

Not sure what you worry about. I think you don’t worry. I’ll worry about defense and there is nothing you can say or do to stop me!!!!!

😃

I do know in many NJ HS programs defense is what wins games. Now I realize if there isn’t given ability defense is one thing that can be controlled.

I know the defense and effort that is played at my local HS is totally different than what Dylan Harper plays. However the downside is players have left program to other schools or quit outright because they don’t want to be constantly yelled at to play harder.

We are getting closer. I agree talent acquisition is not easy. However, landing Dylan and Ace takes the guesswork away. Griffin too. These guys are knowns. Lots of folks are high on others but those are more risky but still high level recruits.

I have had this discussion with Brandin Knight. Every player coming to Rutgers knows that he has to play defense.

I am 100% positive that if Dylan "wants" to play defense, he will play it better than anyone connected to your high school team. Defense is just effort. Every talented player has the "ability" to play defense if they put their mind to it. I also know that there is not one player associated with your high school that can guard Dylan Harper.

Best of Luck,
Groz

This will really chap GRFigs azz, if the spot opens up I’m making some phone calls to Harper Camp (and we all know it’s a small one) and just get a temp check on MacConnel before proceeding.
I doubt they will answer your call. However if you get through I doubt they know who he is.

The missed dunk? how about getting rebound off the missed foul shot? Houston then made a three point shot. That to me was even more important.
