OT: 2019 Mets Season Thread

Well Panik is batting .343 with the Mets. He was batting .235 with SF. So we are seeing Panik playing above his level.

Panik has had solid hitting seasons in the past. Not .343, but he was over .300 in his first 173 games. Also batted .288 with 28 doubles, 5 triples, and 10 hr's in 138 games in 2017. But .254 last year with a .307 obp, and a measly .332 slugging. .235-.310-.317 this season. So he has struggled for a long stretch.

So his resurgence looks like a classic case of change of scenery combined with a rising tide raising all ships. He was in a rut in SF, and he got some excitement back in his game coming to NY. Especially with how the team is playing right now, and the energy which surrounds the team. I think Guillorme and Lagares have seen their games lifted due to the teams momentum as well. Interesting stuff.

That's my point. The standings with us all playing each other will ultimately show who the best two wild card teams are so even though we're only 2 out that is going to swing wildly the next month.

I'm being hard on Stroman but after 4 starts I'm not too impressed.

Stroman has not been good thus far. But he hasn't been terrible either. And he battle's. I fee there is a good run in him.

I sort of have this feel about Stroman too. He has not been good but...just good enough to keep us in the game. He obviously has better but if his "bad" is what we are seeing now, that is a great sign...

He's another positive energy guy too. And brings it to a starting rotation that leaned pretty heavy to the stoic side of the spectrum. Does that positive energy help the other starters when it's their turn up? Does his energy have an effect on other parts of the team? Create a bridge of some sorts? I dunno, maybe that's too much, but his energy has certainly not hurt the momentum of this team.

I won't say he is a non factor but in one week, did he turn a .235 hitter into a .343 hitter? Sounds like a stretch.

I'm sticking to my change of scenery-positive energy theory.[/QUOTE
Was half joking
I have been in Europe for the last week and barely keeping track of scores. That Rosario debate above was tiresome. LGM.

Nimmo for Altherr and Lowrie for Tejada please. After that rosters expand so we'll be fine for when Cano gets back and maybe Smith.

Guillorme and Lagares improvement may be to increase playing time. You get into a rhythm when you play more often than not.

We've seen great moments from Lagares before, but he invariably gets hurt and the cycle repeats. Hopefully he can stay on the field and keep producing.

Ehhh to be honest, don’t care enough. See ball, hit ball.
I believe someone pointed out strikeouts were down and he is obviously hitting more. My 50!years of baseball where we had to watch, listen or read about a game rather then being able to gather all sorts of crazy stats, tells me he isn’t swinging at as many really bad pitches that are unhitible and he is taking good swings at pitches he can hit. Not sure what you want to call it and don’t care.
He has become a much better hitter and that is all I care about.
From my own personal experience, my walks went down the better I was hitting. For me as my confidence went up I got more aggressive and took less pitches, therefore less walks. I'm not saying this is what is going on with Rosario or what is the norm, just relating how it was with me.

Davis last AB was also a great example...0-2 count, work it to 3-2 foul off a couple of piyches until he got the pitch he was looking for.

Tony Gywnn averaged 52 walks per 162 games...just saying

It's been a long time since the Mets have had this many young, exciting everyday players. It's always been a pitching rich franchise, so this to me, is very refreshing.

Quickly turning into one of the more enjoyable teams in quite some time, even sans a playoff spot (as of the moment).

Great article on Adam Guttridge in The Athletic today. BVW really could have been even more of a disaster as we had previously known. Thankfully Guttridge was a voice of reason in keeping McNeil. He also was the loudest in the room in wanting to bring in JD Davis.

"Guttridge was also a strong voice for keeping Jeff McNeil last winter when the Mets considered including McNeil in multiple trade packages."

Not to mention a vast majority of the fan-base (including moi).

No you’re correct. Lol. I’ve been keeping tabs on Tejada. Lol. He hasn’t hurt us fortunately yet.
Tejada will neither hurt nor help us because he's been DFA'd. Flexen back up. Back to an eight man pen and a four man bench.

And Altherr just keeps on keepin' on.

Oy with the constant Flexinization
Flexen is the Ruben Tejada of pitchers. There’s a large enough sample size to know what he brings which is very little. I’m sure the bullpen was used heavily yesterday is the reason why flexen was recalled. And I’d be flabbergasted if any team picks up Tejada.

Wilson and Lugo unavailable tonight per Mickey. Also:

Michael Mayer

Jeff McNeil is playing in a rehab game tonight. He will play both corner outfield spots.

I suspect Flexen was chosen because he was rested and throwing well. Mets have a bunch of pitchers who are good enough to thrive in Syracuse, but not on the big stage. That's why they're in Syracuse. We are familiar with most of them.

Except it's not two months, is it? The number I heard last night was 35 games. And, setting that aside, precisely where did you get your 2-month rule from anyway, you know the one that says that such a (non-existent here) streak could only come with greater selectivity? You've just assumed your way into your preferred conclusion--abandoning your circular strikeout argument along with way--and also used bad facts.
Just posted on SNY .364 over the last 54 games.

Not that I'm petty or anything.

Thanks for the info. I remember the Mets putting in Dunn in lieu of McNeil. I also remember being just dumbfounded seeing McNeil in that deal as well when reports started to circulate. Wish Guttridge could have convinced him to keep kelenic or to stay away from cano.
