OT: 2019 Mets Season Thread

Sounds like Panik will be signing with us right after that 1 PM deadline. This won't happen but I'd cut Hech save another $2 million because we know the Wilpons love that and keep LG up.

Best thing to happen to the Mets is Cano going down. They are definitely a better team now.

I agree with this only because the Mets insist on batting him high in the lineup. His strikeouts and rollers to second base have killed a ton of rallies, plus his lack of hustle doesn't help. If they batted him 7th or 8th, he'd be fine. Guillorme and Hech are clearly better defensively but they hit like 8th graders. Panik should be a slight upgrade over Luis and Hech and pretty much a wash with Cano, which is pretty scary since Panik was just DFA'd..

If Panik is equal to Cano and he was just DFA'd, why sign him? Is he really making a difference for the team? I understand the Mets need a left-hand bat since Smith went down, but why fight over crumbs?

Who else is out there?
Is it worth spending more money and not get the results you need? It like deciding do I go out in a quick, violent death or a slow, painful one? Either way, the results are not good. If Panik troubles were only this year, I might say take a chance on him, but this is two years in a row where he has struggled. While the Mets are at it with has-beens, might as well trade for Chris Davis of Baltimore.:Laughing

I want to see them get a vet on the bench who has been through a pennant race. Panick would help in that regard. If he can be Kelly Johnson that would be great. But even if he is not, the fact that he has had pressure at bats down a stretch is still an upgrade over Luis Guillorme or AA in a tight game late.

Wild Card Standings
Nats +2
Brewers 0
Mets - 1/2
Phils - 1/2
Cards - 1/2
DiBacks - 1 1/2
This Nats series is HUGE! Need to set the tone for the remainder of the season and gain ground on the teams ahead of us. Really need 2 out of 3 especially if we miss Max and Rendon is out. Can Luis Guillorme channel his inner Felix Milan and choke up and slap some hits? Ya Gotta Believe!

Because both Cano and Panik are better than Guillorme and Hech. It can make a difference since the latter two can’t hit at all.

Guillorme might be able to hit. His minor league numbers suggest so. We know Hech can't and Panik used to. I'm all for replacing Panik with Hech.

Might as well hang it up if the Mets dont at least go 4-2 vs Nats and Braves next 6 games AND 4-2 vs Braves and Cubs in two weeks. Whats the point of beating up the teams they have been beating recently when they cant step up in competition vs the better teams in the league?

I can't find anything showing who is out there but I doubt there is much. Carlos Gomez and Keon Broxton lol.

Nimmo might start rehab games shortly so that would be it. Rajai Davis just started playing again 2 days ago so I bet we see him swapped for Altherr somewhat soon.

Be even better if he could channel his inner Al Weis. Didn't Weis hit 2 home runs against the Cubs to help turn the season around and then was MVP against the Orioles?

True but y theme is the '73 Mets who came all the way back from double digits under .500 to get to the WS.

The point would be, anything can happen in the playoffs. Guys get hot, guys get cold, guys get injured. But you gotta be in it to win it.

One Wild Card game, deGrom is as food or better than anyone else the Mets might face. Possible exception is a fully healthy Scherzer. Win that and it's the Dodgers. Tall order for sure, but you never know. What if Noah's hot month carries through the rest of the way and Wheeler does what he did in the second half last year? That's a solid top three. How does Stroman pitch in the NL East? Maybe that's four.

It's not like this is the NBA or NFL where tanking can get you help fast from a top draft pick.

Agreed - really could care less what the record is as long as they get in. Anything but another matchup with Madbum, and I'll cope. The guy is permanently penned in for 9 scoreless at crunch time until proven otherwise.

I would have kept Hech and tossed a pitcher. I still don't understand why a NL squad thinks a four man bench is adequate. With a DH yes, but your backup catcher really can't be used to ph for fear of injury so you really only have three options.

And we all know the Mets need to get rid of a lot of dead weight in the bullpen. Short bench could hurt the Mets in the short run.

Greg Joyce of NY Post just reported that Mets DID contact Asdrubal Cabrera when he was DFA'd - in fact they contacted him before the Nats did! He chose to go with the Nats largely because he was pissed at the Mets for his treatment in the offseason. Back then, Mets had made a preliminary contact to Cabrera, and then signed Lowrie instead without ever getting back to Cabrera to let him know.

Assuming true, very bad job by BVW. Not in preferring Lowrie to Cabrera, but in the way Cabrera was treated. Before the Mets announced the Lowrie signing, would it have hurt to reach out to Cabrera, explain that the Mets were moving in a different direction, and again thank Cabrera for his service? BVW burned a bridge, which is never wise.
