OT: NCAA College Games Thread 12/2-12/3 Championship Weekend

Utah playing themselves into Top 4?

Or do “Conference Championships” not matter until 2024?

3 losses matter
In 2024, they would be playing themselves into the playoff and the top 4 and I love it. I don’t care if they have 3 losses, they’d have 10 wins and the PAC12 championship. That’s worthy to me and no different than NFL division winners with worse records getting home field over teams with better records that didn’t win their division.

With 4 teams you can’t have that luxury but with 12 you can.

The first time Utah played USC this year they had dedicated the game to two dead teammates.
They played their hearts out and beat USC.
I could say they are playing the same way tonight but I wont take away from Utah's defense.
USC's defense is ranked in the 90s and its showing tonight

Agreed, will be fun when it happens. The B1G and SEC games not mattering tomorrow are boring

False.
Not in 2024.

Why are top 4 seeds guaranteed conference champs?
“Because conference championships should matter.”
In 2 years Utah is potentially a Top 4 seed.

I didn’t think a playoff could be more poorly designed than March madness but they did it.

Talking about this year, not 2024

This would be a third playoff birth for Utah if it was 12 all along. That’s a good thing imo. They don’t have the recruit rankings of Oregon and USC and yet they find a way to compete and win.

Difference is NFL is consistent with their rule - ALL division winners are seeded higher. It’s not pick and choose (only Top 4 - the other 2 get seeded below at-large).
“Conference champs matter!!” (but only some do).

Don’t have the luxury? To consider conference champions important?
Like I said - all of sudden they matter in 2024 which is just weird.
They go from not important to the most
important?

The NFL had 8 divisions with all teams on even footing and essentially even SOS, college has 10 conferences with team not on equal footing and very uneven SOS.

Inclusion is a good thing and I’m a proponent for it but theres only so far you can go when the dynamics aren’t exactly the same.

It changes because the format has changed so it’s somewhat apples and oranges comparing what’s possible 4 vs 12.

Why cheers?
I thought everyone hated the SEC getting two teams in last year?
I do think the SEC has some bias but I didn’t have problem when teams like Alabama and UGA get in and deserve it.

If Alabama somehow got in with a TCU loss I wouldn’t like it though as they’d have two losses and no conf champ game appearance. It would be unprecedented for that to happen.

I wouldn’t love it but a semifinal of bama/Georgia and osu/Michigan would be amazing

I hope TCU wins and keeps any chance of Alabama getting in off the table. IMO as long as it’s not a blowout loss, I think TCU should be in.

I like TCU, they’re another Utah for me and I’d like them in the playoff. I love seeing these Cincy, Utah, TCU etc….stories in CFB.

Me too

If I was Riley, I’d have to let go Grinch and hire someone like Ryan Walters from Illinois, Jon Heacock ISU, Gary Patterson if he doesn’t get a HC spot or Zach Arnett Miss St.

Grinch built up a good defense at WSU with Leach and he improved OU somewhat but what he’ has done lately isn’t close to good enough

Are you saying he is the Grinch who stole the PAC 12 Championship from USC? Maybe a Who is next.

Maybe - they totally embarrassed tOSU at home with everything on the line. I told my kids I thought UM may win because it was strength on strength and the UM defense is legit.

I was at skull session before that game and the coaches and players who spoke to the crowd sounded tight. They approached the game as if their honor was on the line and didn’t sound loose at all. They played like it too…and the injuries didn’t help either.

Think round 2 will be very different. But…that why you play the game.
