No where else in the country comes close. Still trying to find a good sub place in NYC, but it just isn't on the same level. Katz Deli is my favorite City sandwich place.

Its funny to hear people, especially on the Mainboard, brag about Publix subs, when I know they're straight trash.

I agree. But people on our own board even brag about Wawa subs, which is just silly. There are so many great places to eat in New Jersey. On the whole, we have better food than probably anywhere in the country.

Agreed, Go to an old style Italian Deli / Pork Store in NJ and you will get a sub sandwich that would put all the major sub chains to shame.

Exactly it's amazing you get these people bragging about subway , tastee subs , Quiznos and wawa. They obviously haven't had real subs at NJ delis

I think we are talking 3 different categories here:

- Real Italian Heroes (in which case I like places with Brooklyn bread which you find more in NYC than NJ

- Jewish Deli

- Subs (I would put Wawa in this category)

I would not go to Wawa looking for semolina bread, chcken cutlets, eggplant, artichoke, on my sandwich, nor for a pastrami or corned beef on rye with pickles and latkes.

NYC may beat us in the first two, but there are many great NJ places that fall in those categories.

Where I think NJ excels in food is Asian, Mexican, Cuban, Italian-American, and seafood DTS. Not to mention our own inventions like pork roll, fat sandwiches, and diner food like disco fries.

One sandwich category I would like to see NJ move into is banh mi...the best one I ever had was in Westminster, CA (largest Vietnamese population in the US- haven't been to Vietnam yet).

Jersey Mikes a pretty good substitute for those outside NJ. Best I can find out here.
Jersey Mike's doesn't come close to a place like A & A Fine Foods in Lincoln Park. Only thing that might be better is the price. Everything else -- bread, seasonings, cold cuts, cheese. A & A is top shelf. Jersey Mike's is college guy stuff. A & A is for people who appreciate the best.

Real Italian Deli - Tutto Fresco in Livingston
Jewish Deli - Eppes Essen in Livingston
Sub/Sandwich Shop - Millburn Deli

Jersey Mikes ? Oh brother!

Is Randazzo's in Raritan any good? I pass by it all the time driving from Flemington to OB.

I notice all the delis mentioned hail from north of 78. Is NJ south of 78 (notice I'm NOT labeling it North/Central/South Jersey) bereft of deli-goodness?

When you live in Minnesota, jersey mikes tastes pretty good.

Not so fast - the south has some pretty good shops too. The Brown Dog in Charleston, SC and Three Pickels in Santa Barbara, CA are second to none - although their best sandwiches may be NYC-NJ inspired, the Pastrami & spicy mustard and the meatball sub.

Only place I eat in NJ is North Bergen around Franklin Lakes and just finding a real deli is a task

Hogback Hoagie on the Bordentown - Hamilton border has great subs and an extensive selection.

Little King in Hamilton made the top 10 in the state.

White House Subs in AC. Get the White House Special.

I found a place in DC that's pretty good, Bub and Pop's. The Italian Special is really good.

No tasty delis here in CA but my 2nd home state is known more for burgers- In N Out and Habit burgers are fantastic! (BTW, I really miss Tastee's in Edison, NJ. Are they still in business?)
Tastee subs in Edison? Man you have been deprived of a great sub with real bread if you miss that sun and subway. Next time you come back hit up some of the real delis mentioned in this thread. Oh and Olive Garden is not good Italian.

Best sub is the one you make yourself, IMO. Get a nice Italian bread at the bakery, fine Italian cold cuts from a good deli or local curer, nice olive oil and vinegar (wine over balsamic for me), and nice toppings - roasted red peppers, specially cured olives, hot peppers, etc.

Al the next time you come out to So. Cal, call me / we'll make the pilgrimage to Katella Delli in Los Alamitos (near Seal Beach)....absolutely the BEST Delli in California.

Bar or Bas none!

Mo Where do they get their bread and rolls? We both know the bread sucks out there. There was a place in San Diego, Oceanside, that flew in Amaroso bread from Philly every day for their cheese steaks..Yummm.

Maywood market, Mother Daughters greenville NY

Rich's Deli when it was Rich's deli

I've had sandwiches from there besides cold cuts and I like them. Chicken cutlet with mozzarella and roasted peppers is really good. Nice seasoning too. Plus pastries for later.
As a kid would go to the Tasty Sub Shop in Edison, nothing fancy, but everything was so good. The Tiny Sub Shop in Hackettstown is good after a day of fishing the Muskie. Capacity 10 people.
