OT: New Jersey Delis Make the Best Subs

Tastee subs in Edison, place has a line out the door on game day
So does wawa and subway on game day doesn't make them great subs. Check out real subs with great bread and you will never go back to those places.

Harold's is a NYC Jewish style Deli with MONSTER sandwiches. Actually everything they sell is super size. Really over the top. You can buy one sandwich and have left overs for a few days .

They do sell Hero subs too, one Hero will be enough for 2-3 people, maybe 4 LOL.

Jersey Mikes is the biggest ripoff scam around. If you're from NJ and think Jersey Mikes is good that's like saying Papa Johns is best NJ pizza parlor.

Well, I know people in NJ, who actually only get Pizza Hut, Papa Johns and Dominos and they argue among themselves about which is the best pizza in NJ among those three....

I always have to walk away when I hear stuff like this... I can't take it, there is just no way I could say anything with insulting everyone.

Anyway, Jersey Mike's is for those people. The I love Subway but I think Jersey Mike is better crowd.

Has anyone been to Steck's Deli on the old Somerville Circle Mall ? Always had great sandwiches and salads. I passed it recently on a trip to Lambertville over Christmas.

I have been there.....they always have good stuff.

Surprised NJ Subs on George Street hasn't gotten any love here. Hours aren't great for folks who don't work in NB (I've only had it a handful of times for this reason), but the subs are awesome.

They are very good and their soups are even better. But unless someone works in Downtown New Brunswick they most likely never ate there. I went there a few times, very good.

Has anyone tried the Jersey Mike's in Point Pleasant? The store must have done something right for the place to be a national chain. I go there because it's the only sandwich place within 5 minutes of my house. BTW, I don't think that it's as good as eating a sandwich from a real deli.
You think Starbucks was in the top 50 coffee shops in Seattle before they exploded? They just had a great business plan and management that was able to execute.

Talliercios in Middletown and Joseph's Deli in Spring lake are my favorites in Monmouth County.

I like Elsie's, but whenever we order lunch out at work the vote always goes to Taliercios. Partly because the food is good, and partly because some of the guys at work know them from the old country. (Brooklyn). :)

Is Randazzo's in Raritan any good? I pass by it all the time driving from Flemington to OB.
Uggh...when I used to work in that area, used to order from there. Food tastes pretty good, but go there and it's disgusting and unhygienic. The cold cases where they store food has inadequate space so prepared cooked foods are literally next to raw foods. Ate a cheesecake from there New Years Eve 2015...there was a long hair in it. No thanks.

I forgot about Taliercios. When I lived in Middletown it was our go to place for subs for games at HPSS. We would open them up at halftime and people around us in the stands would always ask where we got them. Their subs are the truth.
I get my 6 footers for tailgates there. Good place. I miss Tony's Bakery in Hoboken where the fresh baked bread and fresh muzz were a bomb. Down here in Monmouth aside from Talerico's check out Neils Kitchen in Long Branch, was runner up in the Ledger contest. I want to try DeMarco's in Matawan next time I am out that way.

Jersey Mikes to New Jersey folk is probably what Chipotle/Qdoba is to Californians. I love burritos and am more than happy with Chipotle, but in Cali, I wouldn't even consider it with the amount of great places they have. Jersey Mikes is probably as close as those in the other 49 can get to the real deal.

Best sub is the one you make yourself, IMO. Get a nice Italian bread at the bakery, fine Italian cold cuts from a good deli or local curer, nice olive oil and vinegar (wine over balsamic for me), and nice toppings - roasted red peppers, specially cured olives, hot peppers, etc.
Reminds me of scene in the Pope of Greenwich Village where the Eric Roberts character pulls open of loaf of semolina bread, stuffs it with meat and provolone, and starts to chow down.

Only place I eat in NJ is North Bergen around Franklin Lakes and just finding a real deli is a task

You got the kosher Nosh in Glen Rock and the Park Wood Deli in Midland Park both are pretty good.

The best deli in Bergen County is Casa Del Sol in Hillsdale or Woodcliff lake.

Actually, Chipotle does pretty well. They're known to be clean and lines at the places are pretty long during lunch and dinner time. King Taco pretty much blows this place away but once again, the LA traffic does play a major role when considering choices for lunch. (There's a Chipotle in my town.)

No, they are not, LOL.

The multistate E. coli outbreak linked to Chipotle that began in October has garnered extensive national coverage, but it’s just one of five outbreaks the “fast casual” restaurant chain has had to deal with since July.

ChipotleChickWrapMainThe other four outbreaks took place in single states; however, three of them were larger than the multistate outbreak. In total, more than 350 people have been sickened at Chipotle this year.

It happen again in 2016.

That's a stretch. It's not like there are no good delis or sub places outside NJ.

Mia Famiglia in Milburn. Tutto Fresco is pretty good and Esposito's East Hanover is great value, but Mia Famiglia is my favorite Italian deli. All their prepared food is great.

Milburn Deli is a very good "traditional" deli.

I used to work in that shopping center 20 years ago when I was finishing up at Rutgers. Always used to get the Italian grinder at Stecks. Nice to hear the place is still there.

There might be some diamonds in the rough but I do not think there is nearly the density of good delis that we have. Suggest some places and if I am in the area I would love to try them.

Jersey Mike's doesn't come close to a place like A & A Fine Foods in Lincoln Park. Only thing that might be better is the price. Everything else -- bread, seasonings, cold cuts, cheese. A & A is top shelf. Jersey Mike's is college guy stuff. A & A is for people who appreciate the best.

He did qualify it by saying outside NJ. I've been living in the Seattle area for a year now and Jersey Mikes is the closest approximation to a real NJ sub that I can get here. I miss A&G fine foods in Fords, Italian Touch in Avenel, the old Garden Deli in Iselin, just to name a few.

Density, probably not. But that doesn't mean that chains are best they have on offer.

Backcountry Deli is a small Colorado franchise that makes some pretty mean subs.

Tony Caputo's .. Italian deli in Salt Lake City, complete with locally cured meats and nice sub menu.

Go to pretty much any other city or sizable town across the country, and I'll bet you can find something better than the chains.

Mario Batali's dad's place Salumi is in Seattle. They cure their own meats and make sandwiches. I've never eaten there, but it's supposed to be very good.
