OT: New York Mets 2023-2024 Off Season Thread

The 4th place Mets break the record for luxury tax payment this year....$101 million. One writer called it the most expensive flop in baseball history.
San Diego was 2nd with $40 million, followed by the Yankees with $32 million.

I wonder if there's a stat for most money spent since 2010 and not winning a ring? Anyway,it's nice to know you take comfort in comparing the Yankees failures to as you like to call them,The JV LMFAO

When Steve Cohen bought the Mets, their farm system ranked 29th out of 30. Many are complaining he hasn't made a big splash this off season. I think building from within your own is the way to go.

Who has our farm ranked 4? Also who had it ranked 29 at the time Cohen bought the team?

Lucas Giolito to the Red Sox

Mets getting no one this offseason
The Mets are really punting on the 2024 season. Eppler caught a lot of heat for saying it, but he was right. Stearns came in, giving the impression that the Mets would compete in 2024, but nothing so far indicates that's true. This falls on Cohen's shoulders as he is responsible for final decisions.

Per reputable sources, 3 names that the Mets are interested in:

- JD Martinez
- Gio Urshela
- Imanaga ( Japanese pitcher)

Sales is done.
Atlanta doesn't think so and they've always been smarter than the Mets on $hit like this. Sale, 34, is coming off his best season since 2019, having posted a 4.30 ERA in 102⅔ innings with 125 strikeouts, 29 walks and 15 home runs allowed.

The Mets need to continue to try to build their system. I'd bet that it continues to need upgrading, and that's where I hope that Stearns will be doing his best work.

Stop evaluating talent using measurables and figure out who’s going to win games for you.
That little second baseman who makes every play, doesn’t strike out, hits behind the runner and runs the bases well is overlooked today, not by the Phillies though.

McNeil? Hehehe It is the thing the Mets did do right…

Superb defensive CF, dynamic base stealer, meh bat. Nimmo moves to left for a year at least. Bader holds the fort until Gilbert gets here in 2025.

Bader should only play CF against LHP and as late inning replacement. He is awful against RHP. For 1 year we can live with it.

Mets clearly going for defense first guys with some of their signings and trades. Run prevention to help clean up some stuff.

I’m fine with Bader. Always liked him. Just hope he stays healthy.

I presume Bader to CF and Nimmo to LF.

Now still need a DH ( I desire JD Martinez) and starting pitching.

Bader signing is no risk, high reward. Nimmo in LF, Bader in CF is dynamic. If Bader stays healthy- he could have a great year.

I disagree with the high reward unless he does something totally different than he has in the past. Hit RHP.

Also- is Bader better than Nimmo at CF? Nimmo has become a highlight film out there. Maybe Bader stays healthier in LF

I'd rather have his brother Darth. A very intimidating force. When he's got that stick in his hands, he can wield it like a master.

Yes Bader is better in CF. Nimmo was great in CF in 2021 but took a step back again last year. It'll still be a 70/30 60/40 split with Nimmo in CF most of the time though.

Bader is as good a centerfielder as there is. But he can't hit enough or stay healthy.
The trade for him by the Yankees might be one of the dumbest they've ever made though.
i'm gonna have trouble rooting against the guy now that he's a Met.

Next up could be Shota Imanaga. He has until January 11 (a week from today) to sign. He is considered more of a Senga-type than a Yamamoto, and will likely command Senga money.

Sign him, JD Martinez, maybe one more bullpen arm, and we're ready for spring training.

I would be ok with that and bringing Robertson back.

I think some of the writers have said we're not on Imanaga. Could be someone like Manaea instead. Like you said I really would like one more bat and some more pen arms.
