OT: New York Mets 2023-2024 Off Season Thread

Small market? Still going to have a top payroll and owe $80 million in luxury tax money. Where do you people come up with stuff? Minor league deals with ST invites go out all the time. It's pretty obvious what Stearns is doing and it's the prudent thing to do at this juncture. I'm willing to say if they add another major league pen arm or two we'll finish with a better record than last year. Stearns is waiting for prices to come down as we get closer to ST and can add then.

This thread has been loaded with reactionary dum dums for years.

The Mets also just signed, ok, not sure where I am going with this but when the F did we really become small market.
I get it and long run, maybe better for Stearns career- but he will lose this fan base faster than anyone in history if this continues and we trade or lose Alonso.
They do have a 40 man roster and a minor league system to fill out.

My biggest concern is Alonso…does he get discouraged if this is another bad season?
Also, the lack of a DH…
I get that 2023 was horrible and cost us a ton of cash but to throw away a year just sucks for fans. Sign Alonso now and at least we all have something to look forward to.

They will sign him, and I really don't think Cohen is gonna throw away 2024.

Summary of Mets arb-eligible players, per metsmerizedonline.com

Pete Alonso - $20.5M
Adrian Houser - $5.05M
Drew Smith - $2.225M
David Peterson - $2.15M
Tyrone Taylor - $2.05M
Joey Lucchesi - $1.65M
DJ Stewart - $1.38M

The only arb-eligible player for whom agreement has not yet been reported is Phil Bickford.

On the subject of metsmerizedonline.com, they ranked the Mets Top 75 prospects, which is a lot. Here are the Top 10:

1) Drew Gilbert (Verlander trade)
2) Jett Williams
3) Luisangel Acuna (Scherzer trade)
4) Christian Scott
5) Ryan Clifford (Verlander trade)
6) Marco Vargas (Robertson trade)
7) Ronny Mauricio (still has rookie status)
8) Kevin Parada
9) Colin Houck
10) Mike Vasil

Worth noting that four of the top six came in last year's housecleaning. Also worth noting is that Christian Scott, once thought of as a midlevel prospect, is skyrocketing through the ratings. Maybe he will lead the next wave of Mets homegrown starting pitchers.

This will be a fun watch. If you dislike his social media statements, ridicule of Cashman, teammates, fans or you like negative articles about him, he considers you a racist! Has nothing to do with him acting like an as$. How many Yankees has he beaned in the past? Yup, gonna be a must watch for sure.

Scott's FB is a lot better than people realized with his command and shape. Might crack top 100 overall in some lists. I'd have Jett #1 here but a much better top 10 going into the season than last due to the trades and minor league performances in 2023.

Gilbert or Jett at the top would be hard to debate either way. Think we see them both this year.

He was good for the Cubs before getting hurt and was good for the Mets in 2021. I would’ve been happy to have him back on the Cubs. The only SM slip up was throwing stuff on there about not getting an extension in season but a lot of guys do stuff like that.

Mets finally have formally announced the Sean Manaea signing. Two years, $28M, with an opt out after next year. Like the signing, don't like the opt out.

To make room on the 40 man, Mets have DFA'd Diego Castillo, who was in the organization for about a week. Castillo joins Cooper Hummel as the latest members of the Phantom Mets club.

To those who blamed Vogelbach for Mauricio's injury - wrong.

Turns out the Mets tried to talk him out of playing winter ball. He decided to do so for the most basic of reasons - he needed the money. Apparently his $2M signing bonus was squandered by an unscrupulous family member.
Maybe the Mets should have signed him to an extension and locked up a free agent year or two.

Maybe I missed it but what is the backstory on blaming Vogey?

The theory was that if Vogey hadn't been unproductively taking up a roster spot, Mauricio would have gotten more MLB AB's, and the Mets would not have been inclined to send him to winter ball.

We now know this is belied by the fact that they did not send him to winter ball.

Mauricio had a non-contact injury. Unfortunate, but nobody's fault.

i believe the implication is that vogelbach playing took playing time away from Mauricio, thus forcing mauricio to play winterball to sharpen his skill set. If mauricio had those at bats, he would have been an all-star, potentially a hall of famer already.

Kind of funny as he was pretty much getting more time playing in the minors then he would have had up here…
Winter ball is not the same as playing in the show…

So on the basis of 108 plate appearances and a .643 OPS, you are suggesting that the Mets should have offered Mauricio a six year (or more) guaranteed major league contract?

Had Mauricio been healthy, it is far from a certainty that he would have made the opening day roster.

Eppler force him on Buck. Playing Vogelbach when Buck felt there where better matchups as the DH or the lack of lineup flexibility. Eppler wanted Vogelbach in the lineup everyday at the expense of others.

The Mets tried talking Mauricio out of playing winter ball, but he was having financial difficulties. Mauricio's agent and a family member, who he trusted, blew his $2.1 million the Mets had paid him. Mauricio was set to make $30,000 a month playing winter ball.
