OT. NJ Devils. Are they turning the page?

Once the Mets season ended, Devils attendance has been good.
The games I have gone to lately have been very well attended and filled with fans wearing Devils jerseys.
The arena capacity is around 16,500 for hockey, so even if they sold out every game they would be in the bottom 10 in average attendance.
Their revenues were actually in the top half of the league in 2015 and that was with a bad team.

They finally have rich owners too, off-ice stability and that will help this young/rebuilding team that has a lot of promise.

Who has tickets to the Marty jersey retirement in a few weeks?
Will be a special night for fans.

I'll be there! Can't wait.

When is the All-Star game, Sunday?
Yeah the skills competition is Saturday at 7 and the all-star game this year is a four-team 3-on-3 tournament starting at 5 on Sunday. The teams are based on divisions instead of conferences. Hopefully this will make it more entertaining.

They were in bad shape under Vanderbeek, but the new ownership group has breathed new life into the franchise. They're steady and have everyone pulling in the same direction, which was always the problem from what I've heard from people there. In terms of attendance, they are the youngest of 4 teams within a stretch of 100 miles and have not had the luxury of multiple generations being born into Devils fanhood. Those who were kids/teenagers when the Devils were winning Cups (like me) have grown up and now have the ability to buy tickets so the numbers should increase beyond the diehards that exist. I average 10-12 games per year and will blow by that number this season. Winning also helps. They consistently see a spike in attendance after the turn of the calendar year, so with the team fighting for a playoff spot, their average will increase as the season draws on. After the cup run in 2012, the team averaged over 17,000 per game in '12-13 and played to over 97% capacity. The fanbase can do it.

When your owner is the same owner of the 76ers I lose all hope for them as a franchise. I'm a Philadelphia fan and think their owner is a complete and utter moron

I'm taking the kids to the game!

Devs fans-

I'm going to Marty night next week with my buddy who is a die hard Devils fan.

I havent really watched much NHL since high school. What do I need to know for the actual game?

I've also never been to a retirement game before, what should I be expecting here?

Wow what a game. Fast, lots of action, great win by the Devils.
Rut, you are going to watch a great event. One of, if not, the best goalies to ever play the game. There have been two iconic players to retire in the same year and both were within miles of each other. Marty and Mariano Rivera. Epic players of their sports. Enjoy. I'm still working on a ticket. Hope to be there.
BTW. Jordin Tootoo was born on Feb 2nd. ..2/2 and he wears # 22

I was always a big Patrick Roy fan growing up, so I can't agree with him being the best lol, but he is definitely up there.

Who are the players I should be looking out for when the puck drops?

EDIT. RUT. I thought you were talking about who will be in the building.....These you might see pregame. Scott Stevens for one. Johnny Mac, Ken Daneyko, NJ'S own Jim Dowd. Niedameyer....its a big list of just Devils player. What will be interesting are big name players that played against him. Mikemarc answer is below
Patrick Roy was a great goalie but a very close 2nd best.

The Rut,

Connor McDavid should be playing. He's been hurt but is expected to return this week. He's #97 on the Oilers, said to be the next "great one". 1st overall pick in the draft this year.

Oilers have 4 overall 1st round picks. #4 Taylor Hall, #10 nail yakupov and #93 Ryan nugent hopkins are the other three. Very exciting players, just haven't clicked as a team yet.

For the Devils, #21 kyle palmieiri. Local jersey kid traded to devils this year. Having best year of career and leads teams in goal. #19 travis zajac and #14 adam henrique are big time players as well.

Have fun.

And Rut. The real sign of a better all around goalie is not all the records but when the sport makes a new rule to stop the best from being dominant. Roy has no rules named after him. Brodeur was so good at handling the puck they created a new rule to stop him.

Patrick Roy p I think was just a very flashy player, seemed to have a very pretty glove.

Also, what's not to like about goalies getting into fights?! Lol

There is only one argument about who was a better goalie than Martin Brodeur it would be Roy. I get it. But Marty holds all the records :)
Enjoy the night next Tuesday. I'm sure I'll make it up to the Rock that night. If I get a ticket soon I'll message you through here.
You will see greatness. I don't have to change your mind on here. You will leave with a different respect for #30 on you're own. Enjoy

I'm actually a Sixers fan too and understand that sentiment. While I don't like what they're doing, I can understand why they're doing it as the NBA is a league that basically benefits tanking if you're not one of the best 4-6 teams. So while the results are disgusting in Philly, it will likely pay off eventually. That said, I care far more about the Devils than I do the Sixers and am liking what I'm seeing so far from this group where they're concerned. They've built a staff from the GM down that had and has stuck to a plan this year. I don't think anyone had the Devils in the mix this season.

Last night's game was as fun to watch as any all season. A full 60-minute effort against a team they are battling with for position. It's unbelievable how tight the east is, as the NYR are now 2 pts up on 9th place. NJ has a number of division games coming up, so not squandering points here is imperative. I loved what I saw from Blandisi and Boucher again tonight. Two guys with noses for the puck and are not afraid to mix it up and be pests. Schlemko made up for a horrid turnover on the PP, while Stempniak burned another former team of his. And what can you say about Schneider? He weathered the storm when the Devils were turning pucks over in the 1st and kept them afloat. This guy deserved his all star spot and I'm happy for him that people are starting to notice.

I'll be at Saturday's game vs. WSH, Monday's game at MSG and Marty night on Tues. Lots of hockey coming up for me. But first, no let downs in Toronto on Thursday!

Tough shoot out loss for the Devils but still get a point with Kincade in goal. Play the HOT Capitals Saturday need a clean win

2nd SO loss to Toronto this yr. They figured to have a letdown after Tuesday's barn burner but the timing hurts with Caps on saturday and others with games in hand. I'll be at the Rock saturday for the first time this season. Hope they play like they did vs Rangers.

Another lousy result against a bottom feeder. Hope they stay true to form and can somehow knock off the Caps on Saturday. Cammalleri is expected to miss this one too, but will hopefully back for Monday's game at MSG.

I never understand why people get so hung up on a shootout loss. Yeah they left a point on the table, but a shootout is no indication of how a team is playing. The game itself was a tie, and they didn't get the bonus point for winning a shootout. Once overtime ends, you know it's basically a coin flip at this point and everything that goes into making a hockey team play good hockey is thrown out the window. If they would have won the shootout, nobody would be feeling so down about the way they played in that game.

With that said, Palmieri has to do more to prevent the tying goal. He was on Bozak, but not doing enough to keep him from getting the shot. Gotta play the body there, not the puck/stick.

Last night was bad much more for the way the Devils played than the result. It was a let down. For example, take a look at the possession stats:

This is particularly true for a road game robcac26.

Well I really can't comment on how they played since I got back from my own game just in time to see the last couple minutes of the third, but my point is that if they would have won the shootout, we probably wouldn't be here lamenting the game like this, even though their play during the actual hockey game would have been the same.

Big 2 games back to back. Rangers just scored. Brodeur statue revealed. Tomorrow Marty's big night

Last night's game hurt. Just didn't show up.

Maybe they were looking ahead to tonight?? Who knows..either way, it should be fun one tonight at the Rock.

Win or lose, enjoy tonight for what it is; a tribute to an incredible goaltender (and frankly, a freak of nature.) As a Ranger fan, what I'll remember most about Marty is he gave you a chance to win every night; all the while playing between 65-70 games every year. I can't remember too many long term injuries that sidelined him.

Apart from the numbers, his greatest attribute was his durability. All time leader in career wins AND losses. This is not a shot at him, if you play that many (for the same team), it is about his consistency not the number.

Enjoy tonight, we may never see someone like him again!!

Rangers fan but was lucky enough to go to Messier night, Leetch night, and Graves night. I'm programmed to hate Brodeur but any Devils fan should move mountains if necessary to do what you can to get there tonight. They're special events. Enjoy.

I'll be there tonight. Should be an unbelievable event. They've won on each night they've retired a jersey in the past, so hopefully that bodes well for tonight. They need to rebound after last night's no-show.

Those "bonus" points count against your totals just as much as any other point. Devils are a borderline PO team. Two or three points tops will separate the last team in from the first team out.
